Yes, Webb looked atrocious. Yes, we only scored 10 points. Yes, we lost to the lowly Browns. But here's the good news.
Eli looked fine in limited playing time, and the starting O-line looked fine. Not great, but fine for the first pre-season game. I expect them to get better.
Our real playmakers were almost entirely sidelined. Barkley had only four touches (all handoffs). Beckham didn't play. Shepard had 2 receptions (on two targets). Engram was never targeted.
So we really never saw our real offense last night. I have every expectation that our real offense will be much better.
Our D was extremely stout against the run, and showed some pressure in getting to the opposing QBs. Just need to firm up the secondary.
Lauletta looked promising, going 6 for 9 in throwing to third stringers. Martin and Simmons looked like they can actually run the ball and might have a shot at making the roster.
That's my takeaway, anyhow. I don't pretend to understand to intricacies of the sport like some here, but I came away from last night with some optimism to go along with the concerns.
The secondary of all units didn't seem to gel with the front seven to form one homogeneous unit. As a result, people got exposed (Ogletree, Apple).
A lot of Mayfield's completions were easy throws. On the other hand, he was VERY impressive. But if he keeps running around back there extending too many plays he's going to get killed!
Bottom line: I didn't see anything resembling or hinting at an efficient offense. Ouch.
His longer passes maybe had a little more loft under them than we are used to seeing, but he appeared to have pretty nice touch. I think he looked like he can play.
I’ve noticed many people saying Eli looked good, yet his stats show that He did very litttle in his 2-3 series so I’m not sure why the optimism.
I didn't notice anything wrong with Eli's arm strength. I would be curious to know if anyone else did.
Expect everyone out there(except OBj) for next week's game for at least a quarter....As for Eli and short throws, whether off his back foot or not, he just does not throw a good short pass/screen pass.....it's something in his DNA......
One thing SB showed....there were plays last year where our runners would get good yardage....this guy is going to get great yardage....and I think when the OL sees this, it changes their mentality and could make them try harder....
I think we should run nothing but screen passes, until we get it right.....anyone remember an episode of the Gong Show years ago? First act came out and sang "Feelings"(and not too bad)....but guess what the second act did? and the third? and fourth? And the fifth? The judges were hitting the Gong before the curtain opened...
For some reason, some on BBI thinks Shurmur is some kind of wonderkind, and we are instantly going to be better......it's not going to happen..... it's a process....whether it works or not, may take us 16 games to figure out.....
not sure if I agree with that - Giants had 134 rushing yards, Cleveland 50. Thats not a sign the Giants were flat and Browns were playing hard.
Difference was Baker made several good throws and plays with his legs, and our defensive playmakers (Collins, OV) were out of the game (pretty sure Collins was out after one drive, OV played more of the 1st half i think).
Shurmer also admitted he had Webb throwing a lot, no doubt for the reps/evaluation. Were he playing to win, he'd likely have stuck to the run more
point being, while the game was mostly ugly, IMO I thought the Giants OL and DL came out and played hard and pretty well.
BTW- Sharp stinks hand wise and not a guy we should be counting on and Jerell Adams has yet to show that he can be counted on.
I don't think Webb, completely aside from his downer last night, is that kind of guy either. I don't see a lot of athleticism in him, and that's not just because Mayfield was on the field a lot. He's lumbering, I called him a quasi-version of stumblefooted Eli on his run down to the five, FatMan called him Kerry Collins, more or less. Webb may have an arm, it remains to be seen whether he has it upstairs. He is not nimble afoot.
Bottom line: I didn't see anything resembling or hinting at an efficient offense. Ouch.
This place is fucking unbearable.
The offense looked fine. They had what two drives??
Obj didn't play engram wasn't targeted, Barkley had 4 touches and was in n out if the game. It was vanilla. These games are basically practices except it's live all the time and vs a different team. Other than that it's practice.
I joke about how people overeact but damn some people here are actually being critical of the play in preseason...it's insane

I felt Wheeler looked really bad. I focused on him because I *want* to believe he's the best option at RT, and he was beat or on the ground a number of times in the right side.
We should learn a lot about him next week. Would be impressive if he bounces back amid the negativity surrounding him this week
I'll reserve judgement on Webb. Not condemning him on one preseason game.
Shurmur had the most bland offense possible. Not one throw to Barkley which will be a huge part of the offense this season. He kept running right - I guess getting work for Omameh and Flowers. I wanted to see Hernandez maul someone.
I went to the Yankee game mid second period because there was nothing else to be seen.
Eli still cant throw a screen pass to save his life so I think that will hurt the play making ability a little with Barkley in the passing game. Not sure why Eli struggles so much with the screens but they are ugly. Some of the backup RBs looked ok but we drafted SB so he is going to be the guy and we have Gallman and Stewart so I doubt they make the team. No one stood out at WR.
I was disappointed with the D overall. I was hoping for a big play and really didnt see one. No one wowed me. We still cant cover TEs.
We have a long way to go. I was excited for the game yesterday and that game has me less excited but we can only go up from last season.

I didn't quite see it that way. His arm strength and lack of athleticism make him a sitting duck back there. I hadn't noticed the arm strength until the throw to the right flat (to Shepard I think). Granted, he threw it off his back foot (which, by now he should know better) but it took forever to get out there. For the first time, I thought his arm strength could be a real issue. I also thought his processing speed seemed a little slow.
Bottom line: I didn't see anything resembling or hinting at an efficient offense. Ouch.

fucking unbearable is an understatement. i get the shell shock of being 3-13 last year but holy fucking shit this is overreaction central. the worst is the off-season trolls are having a field day right now making it even worse.

Do you not realize how fucking ridiculous and embarrassing you sound?
Hahahaha... This place is comedy gold! lol...
There's only one real thing last night confirmed for me: Webb is a 3rd round pick and his chances of ever being a long term replacement for Manning are the same as any other third round QB: mighty slim.
The contrast between Webb and Mayfield was stark, but not at all surprising. All the BBI talk about Webb being the future has been exposed as pure horseshit talk.

I posted nearly the same sentiment earlier.
In any given draft the difference between the best and the 5th best QB is huge.
Food for thought if the Giants ever get a chance that far up the draft soon.
But to say he looked fine is bewildering. He was in, I believe, for two series, and each time the possession ended (once in an FG when we had reason to hope for a TD, and once in a punt)thanks to a missed pass by Eli, the first time a seam route to the TE and the second time a screen to the RB.
You can argue that in a real game, with his taking 60 or more snaps, he would have made up for it. But last night's small sample surely did not look "fine"--except to the opposition.

Wasn't the seam route to the TE, Ellison's fault?
where Barkley would turn a l-7 yard gain into a 30 yard game
We have never had a back with the wheels this kid does .
Coming out healthy is always a blessing !
My point is not to dis Eli but to call out the guys who said Eli looked good when clearly he didn’t do much.....2-4 for some 24 yards and one sack and only three points thanks to SBs 40 yard run.
