Upon further review of Saquon Barkley's first carry...

M.S. : 8/11/2018 7:30 am
...for 39 yards, it was even more subtle than a quick cut to the right and then a quick cut back to the left.

After his first cut to the right (the Center/Guard hole was entirely clogged), he made a motion with his upper body that indicated he was going to THEN take it straight up into the LOS.

But #90 Emmanuel Ogbah was in the hole.

So, Saquon continued with a quick side-step to the right and then suddenly stopped and veered left off-tackle. This last move had both the CB (#21 Denzel Ward) and the LB (#58 Christian Kirksey) -- both of whom had outside leverage -- diving and missing simultaneously as Saquon Barkley blew right past them on the inside.

As I mentioned on another thread, I was vehemently opposed to drafting this guy (over a QB), but now that he's here, I am going to sit back and enjoy watching him destroy defenses.

One last thing: Our O-line doesn't need a push with Saquon Barkley... just stay on their blocks for as long as they can and he will do the rest!

Nice writeup.

Has any other play in Giants history been this overanalyzed?

Wait, you actually READ the in-game threads? 😎
Nice post

I look back to the 2004 draft as comparison. I personally was opposed to trading up. I thought Eli was the best of the 3 QBs. However, I thought Roethlisberger was a ose enough second that there was no need to make a deal. Even Rivers, who I felt was #3 mostly because of his delivery, would have been an acceptable pick in mind.

Once the deal was made, I was thrilled to have i and 100% on board. I liken this year to that. Even if you wanted a QB, we got the probable best player in the draft at an extreme position of need. If he is even half as good as advertised, we got a great player. Put the QBs in the rearview and just root for and enjoy this guy.

It was like a cat and mouse game
Coach Red Beaulieu : 8/11/2018 8:55 am : link
And the mouse was 230 lbs, 4.4 40, cuts on a dime and accelerates instantly to full speed.
I haven't seen it noted here yet
markky : 8/11/2018 9:08 am : link
but the best part of the play was when he calmly handed the ball to the ref as he turned to run back to onto the field.
I wonder if coach Johnson had mixed emotions
KeoweeFan : 8/11/2018 9:23 am : link
on that run. (smile)
All spring he has been trying to rein in Sayquon; don't go for the home run every time.

"The biggest thing is don’t try to do too much every play,” Johnson said of his advice to Barkley.

And then on his 1st ever touch.........
He made these types of plays at Penn State

And people said, “well, that won’t work in the Pros”.

I’ve said it before on here, the Giants have never had a RB with that kind of lateral quickness and agility. It’s uncanny. The last RB I can remember like that was Barry Sanders.

I never used to. But last season when some of the games got out of hand, I grabbed my laptop while watching the game to see the meltdowns of BBI on a live-basis.

I would characterize it as comical blend of "I extreme hate you/extreme love you" on a play by play basis.

I think we saw exactly what we saw with him at Penn State. He had that big run and also had several carries that were not very productive. The reason is not because he is only capable of big plays, it's because that's what you get when you have a great RB running with a crappy Oline. The opportunities are limited, but when they materialize, the back capitalizes. If we improve the Oline, we are going to see a lot more of the big plays, but also the productive ones.

I think it's too early to tell either way with the O-line. Even the Cowboys O-line has had 3 straight plays where they were stopped. Mind you I doubt this line will be elite or anything. Just not ready to say that it'll be crappy, YET.
No, but his line in college was not very good
UberAlias : 8/11/2018 1:25 pm : link
And regardless of how good this line is, they didn't open holes for Barkley on his other four runs.

True. Though it was three runs, not that it makes a big difference.
True
UberAlias : 8/11/2018 1:34 pm : link
And they did look better at other times. Seeing Stewart pick up that 3rd down was one of the bright spots for the night, IMO.
Will teams sell out

to stop SB from running the ball? Even our Giants can do this to limit Elliott. If defenders put 8 in the box, stay in their lanes and protect the sidelines, Shepard, OBJ and EE will end up with big plays.

Should defenders decide not to put 8 in the box, I think 39 yard runs will be common for Barkley. I can hardly wait to see what defensive coordinators decide to do.

If they want to stack the box I'm all for single coverages with Engram and Odell on the field. They should be so lucky to have this problem.

Spot on. The only way Barkley is going to be repeatedly stuffed at the line is because of an inadequate OL. And hopefully this new OL is going to gel and will feed off of Barkley’s talent (he is going to make their jobs so much easier).
