NFT: Oakland A's fans are pathetic

mitch300 : 8/14/2018 1:41 pm
Last night playing at home against the Mariners they had an attendance of 10,400. Plus, during the game they are advertising 15 dollar tickets for lower level seats. I know the stadium is old and they need to move. However, here your team is fighting for a playoff spot and playing the team your competing against and only 10,400 show up. Pretty sad.
Why is it pathetic?
Dunedin81 : 8/14/2018 1:47 pm : link
Why should they get invested in a team that will be demolished before anyone has to get paid?
Have you been to that stadium?
Gmen88 : 8/14/2018 1:47 pm : link
They have troughs in the bathroom, tvs with the backs still on them etc.
For the financial commitment required to attend games in person
jcn56 : 8/14/2018 1:52 pm : link
I don't think anyone has the right to call lack of attendance pathetic. Even with $15 tickets, between tickets, parking, food, memorabilia - a family of 4 would be in the hole a couple of hundred bucks at least to go to a baseball game, one that they could just as easily view (and see better) at home on a large screen TV for nothing.
The whole grading of fans and the expected
arniefez : 8/14/2018 1:52 pm : link
adherence of blind loyalty by the brain washed sheep is quite fascinating to study. The fans are the customers. That stadium is crap and it's cold at night in August in Oakland. It's also not in the greatest part of town. Why would anyone who owns a 50" TV spend money to go there instead of watching for free on TV?

You read this web site there are people who defend the Mara's to the death under any circumstances. Hell there are Knick fans who think Jim Dolan is a good good guy who "spends". It explains a lot about human behavior and how autocrats maintain their positions.
It is Cali and a lot of nice weather areas.
robbieballs2003 : 8/14/2018 1:54 pm : link
The Rams didn't get shit last year either. Neither did the Chargers. Florida teams don't do well.
The stadium is shit...
Dunedin81 : 8/14/2018 1:56 pm : link
even if the tickets are cheap (for one game), the concessions aren't and the parking isn't.

Also, when your team has traded away every star it's had for the past two decades, it's hard to create brand loyalty. They (sometimes) win, and they do so on a modest budget...that's great. But the lag time between success and fan buy-in is going to be longer where these factors are at play.

On that I would disagree. The SF Giants play in the same weather and have been Top 5 in attendance for 8 years and haven't dropped lower than 11th (usually much higher) since the park opened in 2000.

mitch300 : 8/14/2018 2:02 pm : link
I stated the stadium sucks. However, as an ownership your goal is to put a winning team on the field. They did that. To not even get no more than 10,000 for a game is crazy. Also who say's you have to pay for consessions? When the Yanks come to town I always bring food in. Also, Tuesday's is free parking. They just need to move. Back in the 70's I was told they didn't draw the greatest then when they were winning.
Funny
mitch300 : 8/14/2018 2:04 pm : link
thing is on fireworks night they will get over 20,000. So fans won't go for competiveness, but will go for fireworks.
It isn't a concrete statement by me. There are exceptions
robbieballs2003 : 8/14/2018 2:05 pm : link
especially with a team that has a proven fan base over years. I am talking in general. Oakland has a great fan base that travels well but they are out of there. SD never got fans. LA never got fans. The Rays and Marlins don't really get fans if I am not mistaken. The Jaguars are always being talked about in terms of the NFL team that will move next. It is possible you can get the fans but for oje reason or another those areas have had plenty of teams over the years and it usually doesn't work out.
When I said Oakland has a great fan base I meant the Raiders

That also correlates to the new stadium. I guess I'm old school. W would go to old Y.S. and have to sit with a pole obstructing our view . But, we still went. Unfortunatly its more about the stadium and the ameneties than what's on the field. This goes for all teams.

There is definite merit in this. The LA Dodgers do well, but football teams traditionally haven't, and no Florida baseball teams have ever killed it for attendance. Arizona has a good team and a nice park and is middle of the pack most of the time. I just don't think that applies as much to the Bay Area.

Agree. However, if you can get seats behind homeplate on the first 2 levels they are very good. However, seats down the base lines are horrible. I couldn't believe the first time I went to the bathroom and seen the troughs. WOW.

I think a lot more are thinking the same way. Still to only have only 10,00 when you fighting for a playoff spot is crazy.
I was in a Nike outlet store yesterday and came across
jcn56 : 8/14/2018 2:31 pm : link
a Giants sweatshirt for sale. In an outlet store - the cost of a flimsy, made in China out of a polyester blend sweatshirt was $75.

It's not a matter of affording it, nobody in my house will go hungry, but simply put - fuck that. A poorly made sweatshop garment of substandard materials gets $75 because of team licensing? If that means I'm a bad fan, well, so be it. If not wanting to dump more money into the pockets of overpaid billionaire owners and players makes me the bad guy, I'm OK with that. Real wages in this country have been stagnant forever but somehow the price of sports seems to be going up exponentially with no end in sight.

The Chargers were fighting for a playoff spot last year and had a league low 25,000 fans per game. There are only 8 regular season games per year compared to 81 for baseball.

Yes, I understand the Chargers moved from SD to LA and they want a new stadium but they moved because SD wasn't cutting it. The Rams had issues with attendance as well and they were one of the more exciting teams to watch last year.

This. I could go to $20 Wiz games after work. It's right on the Metro, and I still don't go because the prices for food and drink and to be honest, it's easier/better to watch from the comfort of my own home.

Movie theaters have started to recognize this and are now offering reclining more comfortable seats, etc. I expect that newer stadiums will need to adopt these trends as well.

Not only do they play in a horrible stadium, but it’s been made worse by the scumbag owner. To “spur demand” he closed off the entire upper deck. He did open up some seats in Mount Davis, but those are horrible seats for baseball, where as the upper deck between 1st and 3rd were great. Also the Oakland sports complex is in a horrible part of Oakland and mass transit in Oakland is increasingly unsafe. 2 weeks ago there were 3 separate homicides on BART and 1 week ago there were 2 non fatal stabbings. They’re about to lose the Raiders and Warriors. The whole place is depressing

Mount Davis was the worst thing they ever did. I thought the closing of the upper deck was from the previous ownership. You have to admit if you do drive, getting out of the parking lot and getting on the highway is a breeze.

Whats the denominator?
WideRight : 8/14/2018 4:29 pm : link
If there are only 12,000 baseball fans in the area, then over 80% of them showed up. That would be very impressive.

There could be more, but don't count on it.

ESPN shows the A's average 18,409 per game, and that's probably an overcount.

To put things in perspective, Miami averages 9,677 per night. That team ruined baseball in two towns now.

I heard that Miami is announcing the fans that show up. Not the paid attendance. I think a lot are missing my point. The A's are in a pennant race and playing their completion for the playoff spot. Sorry, I expect more than 10 thousand to show up.

The coliseum -- and the simple experiences of arriving to and departing from it -- is downright depressing. This is more than a trivial "Yeah I get that it's not nice, but..." level of depressing. It is bleak. To the left of 3rd base is an ad for Lucas Oil, and just above it is some kind of weird ass structure that actually looks like it might suddenly produce an oil slick.
Now, I'm probably biased because baseball sucks

But I accompanied my dad because he's a Dodgers fan, and I couldn't wait until the game was finished. The subsequent bovine march to the BART station made me wish the game had entered extra innings.

The structure near the Lucas Oil "ad" looks like the sort of thing you might be forced to march through as a victim of genocide:

The A's are coming off a last place season, play in literally the worst building in all of pro sports, play in at best dead neighbor in an otherwise fanstastic city and at worst a dangerous neighborhood, and as mentioned it's a shit parade getting in and out of the stadium.

It's going to take more than a wild card chase to re-engage a fan base that is primed to support a team. You put together the spector of a good team for a few consecutive years and let's talk.

Knocking Oakland fans is kind of a joke. At the nearest sign of being competitive the Radiers fill that shithole, and let's not even get started of the Warriors and Oracle.

So when 2/3 teams can get huge draws to those two buildings that are feet apart, I'd wager it's more the A's than East Bay fans.
