was approached by a longtime browns fan at work the other day with a wager proposal:
lobster/prime rib dinner for whoever wins more games..gmen or browns this season..loser pays, of course
I had to take it...need something to make this season interesting because despite our additions and good draft, I think we're still looking at 6-8 wins
dont think the browns will even match that..I say they should put mayfield in from day one and let him go..co-worker says taylor is a playoff caliber QB and mayfield should sit a year or two
says browns have done this before with high round draft pick qb's and if you put them in before they are ready, all they do is learn to lose..interesting outlook
we didnt do that with eli
That being stated, and disclosing Inwas get a quarterback and begin the next rebuild, I wouldn t be surprised with 4-12 or 10-6.
If line comes together, if Eli can live up to the evaluation the FO gave him, if they stay healthy, if the defense can muster a pass rush,,,,,
Lot if it's, but IF they happen, could be a good year. :)
Browns still have that dolt Jackson as their HC. But pure talent wise they're better. Still Baltimore, Pittsburgh and Cinci 6 times a year is a tall order. All these franchises do everything better than Cleveland.
6-10 for Cleveland
No one knows what’s going to unfold. Some teams are pretty safe to predict being good or bad. Most aren’t. Giants are not safe.
I'm non-committal this year but gun to my head, I'd say Giants will go 8-8 and do better in 2019.
Browns? Maybe 6-10 would be about right. They too will be better in 2019 methinks.
ill make a bet with you if you would like. i dont think we are going to be picking in the top 5 again. would you like to make a wager?
i am not sure why everyone is so doom and gloom here. but having us pickingh #1 overall is fucking insanity imo

Once Mayfield takes over and Eli's age and our OL being subpar rears its head and we realize we have ONE safety who is an NFL caliber player starter, we will all see the light. We should be picking in the top 5 again next year, with an eye on #1 possibly. Our QB situation is a mess and our defense, despite a potentially good front 7 will get roasted on the backend unless guys like Vernon and Carter can generate a lot of heat and this scheme causes issues up front. This could be another very long season, it should be more competitive and I don't see us laying down but I think we're in finger in the dike mode now, once Eli is declared kaput this team is in trouble.

long time Browns fan my ass. There's like 2 of them. That's like having a long time Hartford Whalers fan.
This
I like the move to the 3-4, I like bringing in big guys on the DL, LB and OL and I like the commitment to running but we are a lot of pieces away, or I think we are if Eli is cooked. I think he's maybe got a few game hot streak in him but long term I don't see him QBing us to a lot of wins this year or beyond.

earlier this offseason it seemed you were happy with the direction. You liked the DG hire as well as the draft.
Oh I am, but I don't have any faith in Eli to play at a very high level. I like that DG is building from the inside out, but he's gutting a run down building. Just because I like the builder and some of the pieces doesn't mean this thing is near ready to move in to. Wow that was way too metaphorical, but you get my meaning.

Would you have addressed QB this year? I recall you being all in on Barkley, so I’m curious how you would go about the QB situation.
Blake Bortles
Case Keenum
Nick Foles
None of these QBs are as good as Eli. If we are going to lose this year, which is a certainty - its because our OL doesnt block, our LBs/Safeties cant guard, and/or we have a ton of injuries.
We have holes, but so does every other team. Limit mistakes, convert 3rd down, get off the field on 3rd down, and have OBJ/Barkley/SS/EE do what they do - and we are going to be better than people think.

It's not a position I would want to be in, and DG is on the hook for this one if Darnold or Allen or Rosen become studs and we become also rans with terrible QB play. Gun to my head I take Barkley and keep searching for a QB solution like they did. I like the approach but you don't always fall into a QB. It takes some luck, and you know the whys, Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees are the holy trinity of QB play going on past 10 years and one was a 6th, one fell into the 20s because of his "attitude" and being a system QB and one was a 2nd rounder because he was too short. Throw in Russell Wilson and the Cowboys maybe hitting on Prescott and you have 4th rounders teams kind of lucked into.
I realize this answer is probably longer than what you're looking for but it's not an easy decision or question. I really don't envy anyone in that building who had to do that and hand to God I am praying that Eli has some gas left and I badly want him to. I'm a huge fan of Eli Manning, he won me over and got us rings and made us some amazing memories but I haven't seen a franchise or near franchise type guy in several years and that includes the 11-5 mirage where Odell single handedly won games with a play and our defense played way over its collective head. He wasn't great, he wasn't good he was ok, still prone to bone headed plays and still mercurial with accuracy. At age 37 he doesn't have the fastball he did, so I don't expect a good outcome this year overall.
Pat Shurmer alone will mean at least 3 more wins, throw in Barkley, a healthy Odell, better OL, I think Blue win at least 9 games. The Browns aren't coming close to that.

nothing to do with week one of preseason or being neurotic. Joey sums up my expectations
I was referring to the OP and the like.
thank you for your arrogant, ignorant response that added absolutely nothing to the thread

If we had a decent locker room culture, we could have pulled out 3 more wins last year, instead of going into full meltdown mode.

I don’t believe this. Fans can’t help but place stock in the preseason games.
