If they're counting on

Eli Apple I'm afraid they're (and we're) going to be disappointed. Despite the pick from some third string QB, I think he's going to continue to be a pass interference penalty waiting to happen.

They don't have another option.
He also really hasn't been a pass interference penalty

Waiting to happen yet in his career.
Ogeltree again had difficulty with a tight end

Ogletree's strength isn't coverage so it isn't surprising.
For someone who's seen these Detroit practices,

what do the defensive players actually DO to the QBs when they make a sack?

Two-hand touch in the chest? Slap the hips? Smack 'em on the shoulder pads? Tap the helmet? And does a ref blow a whistle, or does the play continue?
It's surprising that the Giants traded for him
NYRiese : 8/15/2018 7:05 pm : link
using good money, if he can't cover tight ends.
Maybe he should drop afew pounds and try to be faster.
Ogletree is a middle linebacker by trade
Ten Ton Hammer : 8/15/2018 7:05 pm : link
He's not going to match up so well in coverage, especially vertical threat TEs.

Most of the time they just get really close, they don't try to touch, the play normally continues.
I predicted that Apple would be picked on by enemy offenses ....

This year; it's just preseason and already the opposition smells "blood in the water"

We'd all like to think that last year was a mental anomaly for him, but it's starting to look like it's a lot more serious than that - that he was another Jerry Reese mistake.

I realize it's just one practice...
Dan in the Springs : 8/15/2018 7:24 pm : link
But it seems to me that the two-point conversion is most indicative of a team's ability to execute flawlessly, particularly on the offensive side.

Getting swept today would be a bad omen, I'm. Offensive execution has been the biggest problem plaguing this team for the last couple of years, and I've been hoping for real improvement there with the new coaching regime.

Of course it's only one set of one practice, so it's not fair to extrapolate too much. Just tea leaves I'm reading at this point.
The Giants

better be able to rush the passer. Very leaky pass defense.

Not THAT surprising!
Still gonna have problems with covering
Bluesbreaker : 8/16/2018 1:24 am : link
the middle of the field . This offense is gonna have to click sooner than later . I think the defense will be middle of the pack as long as we can average 24 or more PPG we should be
pretty competitive agree about the pass rush need all the help we can give the DB's .
Get healthy Barkley !!
More than injuries

I attribute last season s 3-13 record to a below average NFL roster.

Hard to fix that in one year, which was my argument for beginning anew with next quarterback.

Seemed the haplessness of Giants Online last season was summed up in one play, Kennard beating Flowers.

Evidently Kennard has had a pretty quiet camp, until yesterday's session against Flowers.

This is a league problem, not just a Giants problem. Nobody's solved this.

I completely agree. The worst thing that ever happened to the Giants was the 11-5 2016. That team had tremendous issues, especially on offense and widly overachieved.

This team as it stands is just not good. It's going to take a bit to improve, and I hope Shurmur and co. get the latitude to succeed.

Yep. I would say it's strictly a talent issue, but that would be ignoring the mental aspect of the game (discipline, awareness etc). Once in a while a team may get a player with both athletic ability and the mental capability of playing the game, especially the middle of the field (pat Willis, Ray Lewis). Obviously those guys don't come around often. Not that have to have a HOF player to play the middle of the field.

That sinking feeling when Mel F*cking Kiper has a better draft class evaluation than your FO.
