superspynyg : 8/15/2018 8:00 pm
Blatantly obvious it was on purpose and gets tossed p from game. From the replYs it was intended. Acura 7 hrs in 8 games including 5 straight.

Marlins are disgraceful.

fine with a baserunner sliding into another player at 2nd base with the sole intention of knocking a player over to break up a double play.

Urena wasnít the throwing at the guys head. Donít get me wrong, it was a dick move. But I donít feel that itís any different from sliding into a standing player.

First of all, you are assuming everyone is fine with that.

2nd, theyre very different.

He threw one of the hardest pitches hes thrown all year right at a guy for no reason other than the fact that AcuŮa has been playing great.

I donít have to assume...there have been plenty of discussions about it here.

2nd - they are not that different at all. Both are reckless actions with potentially bad consequences. Purposely sliding into a standing defender in the middle of an ACTUAL baseball play is the most moronic action that MLB allows. The sick part is that MLB actually wants those plays...player health be damned.

IMO, it's not even close to the same thing.

A SS or 2B is expecting a guy to be sliding and breaking up the DP. They practice over and over taking the throw while moving and throwing to first in order to avoid getting taken out.

At least they used to but now with the new rule in place I'm afraid they'll practice that less and it could actually lead to more injuries. Either way if a guy is just "standing" there like you said, he's doing it wrong.

A batter is in no way expecting to be thrown at by a 95mph pitch, and even in he were, it's not easy to get out of the way of that, and certainly not something that's practiced like turning a DP.
bush league
GMAN56 : 8/16/2018 6:40 am : link
I know pitches may get away from you when trying to throw inside but for Keith to say its ok to hit someone, now THATS bush league. You would think it would be a crime just like in hockey to smack someone with a stick. Be a man and try to be the pitcher to STOP him from hitting homers.

So you know every persons opinion based on a few discussions that not everyone has participated in?

Regardless, its not the same. No where close. Not even in the same fucking ball park.

Dude threw one of his fastest pitches right into a guys elbow. Thats not the same as someoone trying to break up a double play.

Thatís fine. Agree to disagree.

You do know this guy is a flamethrower, right? He always throws hard, not just in this instance. The dude threw the ball at his midsection. Not his head. Not his knees. Boo boo if Acuna moved and it hit him in the elbow. The kid isnít even hurt.

I still believe the sliding into a player is just as bad. And nonsensical. And dumb that itís even allowed.
U know

a player is done to try and break up a double play.It isn't intended to maim the 2B because he's been playing excellent.

Players get thrown at for showboating or breaking unwritten rules of competition. They don't get thrown at because they are playing really well.

That's what happened here. If you think it equates to anything else in baseball, you'd be wrong, which is why it is drawing such outrage.

I know your a Yankees fan and you know Mattingly well. I don't, it was suggested in the heat of the moment but after review it is clear that Urena was the only guilty party. Realmuto's reaction clearly proved that he had no idea Urena was going to throw at Acuna.
I don't really know Mattingly well...

I was in middle school when he exited stage right. He's spent his managerial career in the NL. I just can't see a baseball guy of any consequence encouraging his pitcher to get tossed in the first inning. You want to tell me that in the 6th inning of an uncompetitive game he tells a reliever to plunk him? Sure. (And he'd be dead wrong for doing so) I just can't see him telling Urena to plug him between the numbers in that spot.

The xrays came back fine. He doesn't appear to be hurt. And I hope he isn't.

The guy pitches hard. I don't care that ESPN cherry picked the stat that it was the hardest throw he's thrown for the first pitch of the game...like it's some damning stat. The point is he clearly threw at Acuna, it was a bad move, and he'll likely be suspended for it.

It was a legit question. He left the game because his arm was hurt. He didn't leave to go grab a beer.

And it wasn't his fastest first pitch. It was one of his fastest pitches period.

(And Urena should definitely be suspended, bullshit move on his part)

Coaches should work with AcuŮa on his form there. He kind of fought that one off with his forearm and would have been much smarter to turn a bit harder and take it on the back.

Iím not blaming the victim or anything, just hate to see guys take pitches on the hand/arm.

Exactly, there is no reason for that.

If intentionally throwing at a batter is garbage, then intentionally throwing at a different player is also garbage.

Guys get hit by pitches by accident on a regular basis. It's part of the game as sometimes pitchers are wild. Sometimes the player shakes it off as nothing more than a bruise, and other times, the batter gets seriously injured that takes him away from the game for a while (e.g. concussions, broken jaws, broken wrists).

Intentionally hitting a batter is a dangerous and low-class move that can cause serious injury and have a real impact on the player's career.

It's no different than intentionally headhunting or laying someone out on a blindsided hit, or diving at an engaged player's knees just to send a message. It's cowardly and unsportsmanlike.
And Jay, I get it. I'd be pissed if this happened to my best player
PhiPsi125 : 8/16/2018 10:13 am : link
also. Don't want to give the impression that I thought it was no big deal. It was a crappy move by Urena. But the hypocrisy runs thick on this thread. I've seen most of these posters complain that their own pitchers don't throw at hitters in retaliation after their team's player gets hit.

But then they get outraged about this.

You have to retaliate. Personally, being that it's the NL, I'd rather them throw at Urena than say, JT Realmuto. BTW, the Braves play the Marlins again next week. Mattingly may not set up his rotation for Urena to face the Braves during the 3-game series, but if he does, he is going to get smoked. Next week's series is the last time the Braves and Marlins are scheduled to play on the season.

Mattingly is a scumbag.

Iíve read a lot of dumb shit on this site recently but, this one takes the cake.

at first I read about it online and it was suggested that it was planned. Mattinglys name came up and I admitted that I was wrong after I saw it. Pretty obvious to figure that out.

Let me guess. Met's fan?

LOL, another Yankee fan that's fixated on the Mets. Classic.

a pitcher throwing one of the hardest pitches he has ever thrown in a game at a player simply because he was playing well.

Hope this wasn't in reference to me. I never once said it okay to intentionally hit a player. But the speed of the pitch is a bit overblown. This guys has thrown 98/99 mph. It wasn't the fastest pitch he's ever thrown.

ESPN: Out of the 2,125 pitches that Josť UreŮa has thrown this season, that's in the 99th percentile of the fastest pitches he's thrown.

LOL, okay? What's your point? That a hard thrower threw a pitch slightly faster than he normally does but not as fast as he can actually throw?

So he could have thrown the pitch faster?!?! I guess he held back because he didn't want to "maim" him.

He threw it harder than 99 percent of his other pitches. Thats the point. How is that difficult to understand? You're the only one having trouble here.

I'm not the one having trouble. You are clearly that one that needs to stoop to childish levels because someone has a different opinion than you do. This sounds like a "you" problem. But please, carry on.

My goodness you are quite the whiner.

@jasonisbell
The @Marlins sent a very clear message tonight, and that message was ďWe can take your hottest hitter out of the game in the first inning and still lose the game.Ē

Hitting guys
Csonka : 8/16/2018 12:12 pm : link
is certainly frowned upon more today than ever. It used to be a big part of the game though. Keith's point is that you can't let a guy sit up there taking HR quality swings every time. You hit him. You make him think about it next time. Not in the head, but you hit him. That's how it was done. Make them step in the bucket. That's why Randy Johnson hit 190 guys. And Nolan Ryan. Greg Maddox even hit a ton, and he could paint the corner whenever he wanted.

They weren't hitting guys who were bat flipping and slow trotting. They were making guys scared.

I'm not condoning it and I never liked it. If you intentionally throw a ball at me 99 mph from 60 feet, be prepared for me to bring my bat when I charge the mound.

a player is done to try and break up a double play.It isn't intended to maim the 2B because he's been playing excellent.

Players get thrown at for showboating or breaking unwritten rules of competition. They don't get thrown at because they are playing really well.

That's what happened here. If you think it equates to anything else in baseball, you'd be wrong, which is why it is drawing such outrage.

That's really it in a nutshell.............

Actually you don't hit them. You back them off the plate....big difference.

And pitching inside to make a point is different than flat out hitting a guy. Pitching inside will result in some hit batters........this doesn't seem to be the case.

Although today backing guys off is definitely not the same as it was 40 yrs ago..........

Keith also said you can't have a guy leaning out over the plate looking to drive the ball and hit HR's. Problem is, Acuna wasn't leaning out over the plate so his point was wrong on more than one level IMO.
