Wife holds a position in the military and i am regional sales manager. She is looking at places in the area. just wanted to gather thoughts on area. Things to do/restaurants/ general stuff. We do not have kids yet.
Dont go back to Rockville and waste another year. Â
No kids yet I'd say try and stay closer in to the city, maybe Bethesda unless you want to buy or if you're planning on starting a family soon. In Rockville, King Farm is kind of the up and coming area where people are moving to. Access to Rockville Town Center and trains.
Personally I think Rockville is too congested. I hate 355 (Rockville Pike) with a passion. Another alternative where there are tons of young families is the Kentlands/Lakelands area of Gaithersburg, and Quince Orchard Park.
Rental properties in Rockville, and my wife is a real to her active in that area. I would be happy to put you in touch with her to help your search.
Downtown Rockville is pretty nice now, and the Pike and rose area is actually hip. Lots of restaurants and stuff to do. And Rockville is a great place to live if you want to be close to a metro station without paying an arm and a leg.
That will give you easy access to DC. Personally I just hate the congestion of that area, but there is quite a bit to do which would be fun while you do not have kiddies.
I’ve lived here for 16 years. Lots of great food options, especially if you like Asian. Town Center has a bunch of different stores, and it’s one of these ‘smart’ developments. East Rockville is cheaper for housing than West Rockville. Red Line Metro for access to downtown DC.
and don't have kids, the Crown area in Gaithersburg would be good. Really good downtown area with lots of good restaurants and bars. You're also close to Rio. Also, right near a fantastic Lifetime gym that I go to with a great pool. It'll also be cheaper than Rockville by a little. If you're planning on having kids though stick to Rockville. The Gaithersburg schools suck and rockville schools are fantastic.
The problem with both of these areas is that it's a haul to DC. So if you want to go into DC, it's probably 40 minutes
If you're not set on Rockville, Bethesda is a great option. Much bigger downtown area. Much more nitghtlife. Much closer to DC. But much more expensive.
Terrible drivers, even worse traffic, and you can't get into DC without crossing a bridge bottleneck. Beyond all that, i if you ever want to drive to NY/NJ (which I do all the time), it's 45 minutes farther away than Rockville is.
are Nanny O'Brien's in CLeveland Park and the 51st State in the West End. Both are quite a haul from Rockville. That's one reason why I have the Sunday Ticket.
If you would like some help finding a place, give me an email address and I will have my wife drop you a line.
The thought of Rockville evokes a nauseous feeling. Just goes to show people from northern Virginia and Maryland aren’t meant to mix. :-)
I know a lot of DC area people, and lived in Reston for a year while working in Sterling. Reverse commute was great, but hanging out in DC proper was a chore if alcohol was involved.
I find the rivalry as an outsider, amusing. VA, MD, DC all nice in their own way.
I've had good friends who lived in Rockville/Bethesda at one point in their lives and then moved to Reston and Ashburn respectively, by way of Arlington.
I would imagine an NYC outsider who had to live in the boroughs would not be a Brooklyn or Queens loyalist, the way the borough people tend to be. :)

All of this might be true...
But if you want to fly on a proper airplane (A380, 777, 787, etc) you are 45 minutes further out in Rockville than VA, to depart out of IAD.
Not a problem if you fly baby planes exclusively out of DCA.
I actually fly out of BWI more than out of DCA or IAD combined. It's close, easy and cheap to park at, and the least expensive airport of the three to fly in and out of.
Only time I fly out of Dulles is for international or transcontinental flights.
Regardless, I am very conveniently located to three major airports.
my wife and I drive from DC to the Jersey shore and back about 20 times per year. And the most consistent thing we have observed about that trip is that if some dickhead is driving slow in the left lane on the NJ Turnpike, holding up traffic, it's a near guarantee that the car will have Virginia plates on it.
It's the damndest thing. Hundreds of miles away from VA, but nearly every time we encounter one of these idiots on the Turnpike, they have VA plates. Do that trip a few times and you will see for yourself.

Jk
Never been ther I have nothing helpful to add.
Traffic in the DC area is awful, though.

This is so true. Their sellout stuff isn't terrible but early OAR was so much better.

Are there actually any people FROM Northern Virginia?

BWI probably ok, but not as good as IAD.

Damn, so they're mostly vanity tags too.
