my god, they need Judge and Sanchez back in the worst way

Ugh. Cashman Jr in the lineup again.

Ugly bottom half - and with Torres struggling so much since the break, it's even worse.

The updates on Judge haven't been too encouraging. I think we're going to see Sanchez first.
I thought we'd see
dune69 : 8/16/2018 10:45 am : link
Judge ahead of Sanchez. Does not look that way. Judge is still a big question mark as far as "when".
I think Cashman's done a very good job overall
Greg from LI : 8/16/2018 10:46 am : link
But his reluctance to pick up another bat is puzzling. I get that the pickins are fairly slim, but when the alternative is Shane Robinson, what do you have to lose?
Wrist injuries are brutal on power hitters
Greg from LI : 8/16/2018 10:47 am : link
That's why I was surprised when they were so optimistic early on, and not surprised at all that he's taking much longer than they originally thought.
If the refusal to add another bat
Kyle in NY : 8/16/2018 10:47 am : link
is about cost and the luxury tax then that is very disappointing.
Is Brett Gardner really that bad against lefties
Dave in PA : 8/16/2018 10:50 am : link
To sit in favor of some AAAA guy hitting a buck 38? Is Shane Robinson a stud defender? I haven’t seen him play much so I’m actually curious.

arcarsenal : 8/16/2018 10:52 am : link
Robinson is just not a major league player. Why not take a flyer on Granderson or something? He can probably still pop a few over that RF porch @ home.

Yesterday's injury report stated that Sanchez is on track to start his rehab assignment on Aug-24th. Sounds like the earliest he would return to the Yanks is Aug-28 (and that's if all goes well)

so happy we get to finally watch one as this one will start 8pm here. Things haven't changed since I left, still can't beat the O's or Rays 2 times in a row. Yes the reluctance of Cash to add a major league OF has gone from puzzling to infuriating. Granderson could probably have been had for free with just a waiver claim. Chances are 50/50 Toronto would have just let him go. He did a great job with Pitching at the deadline but ignored hitting. We needed a back-up C and OF. Absolutely ridiculous. With Judge I think they were very simplistic with the announcement of the diagnosis of an Ulnar Styloid fracture. Rarely do you just fracture that area. Often times you have whats called a distal radius fracture as well. Doesn't usually require surgery, but 3 weeks was definately ultra optomistic. My bet is its going to be closer to 6 weeks. This makes Cash's lack of action even worse.

Word is Baltimore approached the Yanks
Kyle in NY : 8/16/2018 12:46 pm : link
about Adam Jones but he makes too much. This was what I was worried about. The adherence to the luxury tax as if the Yankees have to pinch pennies and keep a strict budget. I admire the desire to win while also not having far and away the highest payroll in the game. And I know the Clint Frazier injury really threw everything for a loop. But Boston spending the most money as they continue a historic season, while we have the 6th highest payroll and are running Shane Robinson and Neil Walker out in RF, because we won't take on more salary is pretty infuriating.

But at least Hal's year end profit margins will look good!
I'm pretty sure Judge will be back
Kyle in NY : 8/16/2018 12:50 pm : link
before the playoffs and will be just fine. But what if he isn't? Wrist/hand injuries are tricky and maybe he comes back and he's just not right and he re-aggravates it. There's a non-zero chance of that happening. Now we really need a ML caliber OF but we didn't get one because of the luxury tax and by then it's too late.
.
arcarsenal : 8/16/2018 12:52 pm : link
They were saying even when Judge does come back, he may still not have a full range of motion.

Not liking the recent updates on him.. still sore, got a cortisone shot, etc. Egh..

So we're just going to hope

I think it’s better to leave him on the shelf for the rest of the season. Let him fully get over this. Start fresh next season.

Looking ahead I really hope the Mariners overtake the A’s for the second wild card. Yanks vs M’s just looks better. Cano return to Yankees stadium, Better lineup and staff.

with not going after another outfielder just for a few weeks with Judge out. It is important to get below that luxury tax number and have it reset. More important than whatever outfielder they can get right now.

If Judge doesn't come back healthy, this team isn't winning the World Series no matter who they can get

Yup, Snell is tough, but the reality is this lineup just isn’t great right now. Without Judge and Sanchez we have holes...and while different guys have gotten hot for stretches, it seems like runs are at a premium every time out.

Hicks (.365) and Stanton (.347) are the only guys with an OBP over .340 in the lineup. Judge leaves a gaping hole when he’s not in there.

Being/staying under the LuxTax this season is unquestionably a bigger priority than a 4-6 week replacement OF bat.

We’d all like to see a better option out there than Shane Robinson. If going over the luxury tax was truly the only way to make a meaningful improvement, then living w Robinson is the right choice.

Frankly, I think they’d do better to just play Torreyes out there every day.

Being under the luxury tax is more important than putting the team in a better position to go to the playoffs and win a World Series? Give me a break.

Yankees ownership is very luck to have you all looking out for their bottom line I guess. They're going to blow past the luxury tax next season anyway. I know having it reset does save them money (I'll admit to not knowing the exact amount) but much of that has to be offset by the tax they're going to pay in the coming years. Regardless, the Yankees are not hurting for profits.

I was ok with the luxury tax plan until it meant playing AAA caliber players consistently in the middle of a playoff race. Enough already. Get a real outfielder.
I'm hoping we have a repeat of last year

Kyle, the tax IS absurd though

a couple of million dollars. It's tens of millions, and will likely benefit the Yankees big time for a while if they can get under it this year. Once they are under the tax it resets, so it affects many years and tens of millions of dollars. It's important to the long term success of the team that they get under it this year. Hal is not cheap, but he is not going to blindly spend like his father did, and I'm ok with that.

.
arcarsenal : 8/16/2018 3:04 pm : link
I'm okay with them wanting to stay under the threshold - it's just so fucking frustrating that Frazier can't even play right now when there's a spot for him to be out there every single day. And that's not Frazier's fault. The timing just really sucks.

Shane Robinson cannot continue to get starts. There HAS to be a better option without crossing the tax line.
Kyle
bigbluehoya : 8/16/2018 3:05 pm : link
The reset means the luxury tax is 20% going forward as opposed to 50%. That massive.

It’s not me looking out for somebody else’s money. It’s me wanting them to invest heavily going forward and knowing that those decisions can and will absolutely be impacted by the amount of $ they’re burning on LuxTax.

I’m more worried about the 5-10 year window than 2018.
Fair enough
Kyle in NY : 8/16/2018 3:07 pm : link
I guess once they commit to it they might as well follow through. Still don't love it but it is what it is. That said, I'm sure there was an opportunity to acquire at least a respectable bat and maybe swap out some salary like what they did with Warren/Lynn. Or add a prospect to get a team to eat salary.

I'm just worn out by the Shane Robinson experience
