Given the state of the Giants roster, I was in favor of getting the next young quarterback in place.
I m not trying to spark the same quarterback debate here, although I m certain that s where it will go. But before it does maybe I ll get my question answered.
While I don't equate preseason to team performance come the regular season, I do subscribe to the idea you can learn things about individual athletes and what they have to offer to some extent.
Wanting a young quarterback in place, which is what I wanted, seems reasonable. As the Giants did not draft one, also seems reasonable to hope one of the young guys on the roster might be the guy.
A longway to get to my question:
How many think Webb s performance tomorrow night, good or bad, is significant. I do.
I'd expect to see a lot of improvement, and also some help by the coaches in play calling to get him into some good situations.
Webb can argue that the first preseason game was really his first extended action against players who will make an NFL roster. It was also basically his first action of any kind in two years, aside from a few snaps in preseason last year.
But the starters typically play at least a half of game three. The Giants also want Lauletta to get some snaps. This game is therefore Webb's best chance at extended action in the preseason with at least some of the veterans.
Hopefully see Eli for an entire quarter and change.......
Then I'd go to Webb thru the 3rd quarter.
If Webb struggles again, and our draft pick shows poise again, even against scrubs....there could be a move on the depth chart.
To at least light a fire under Webb................
It shouldn't be allowed to continue.

I don't see the clear-cut consensus that you do.

Brown Hornet - I posted scouting reports on the other Webb thread. The same fundamental problems are brought up on each of them.

One was a clear cut 1st player in the draft that multiple teams coveted.. others is Webb who was passed on by every team in the league.. When Webb couldn't take the field last year after the Eli Benching fiasco.. I knew everything I needed to know.. Webb isn't made out to be an NFL starter..
Otherwise the coaches might lose confidence in him at the rate that many of you all have already reached...

as usual by over reacting. Thankfully, Coach Shurmur disagrees with you. Anyone who judges by ONE game would have canned Eli after his debut years ago. Patience is a virtue. He may in fact be a washout. Know way to know yet.

We get it, you think it’s a waste. So why is Shurmur playing him? If it was as clear as day that he has no shot, the guy who knows a lot more about football than you do would pull the trigger.
The HC and GM that drafted Webb are gone. What’s the reason he’s not cut by now since he’s that terrible?

I have no idea. Ask Shurmur.
It shouldn't be allowed to continue.
Fortunate to be on the team? How do you figure?
One preseason game doesn't make a career, nor is this coaching staff going to jump to conclusions.
If he tears it up this week, what's that mean? Again.....not too much.
To me, it's about seeing how the guy progresses practice to practice, and game to game.
This is one thing I worry about is Shula calling the plays
Wish they had taken a QB in the first round, but time to move on from that and trust the GM and his talent evaluators' judgment.
Absolutely the concerns are there but they're not in each one and each one seems to have a few things that are unique.
Regardless I'm an optimist and a football coach so of course I always believe that if the talent is there and the kid is willing to work... there's a chance.
That said I've been burned. You may very well be right.
That said I'm Pollyanna until the coach makes the decision.
When he moves on, I will.
That's how I root.
That Lion DL couldn't touch Eli in Practice....I think they will tonight...
Maybe Webb is just a backup type. Plenty of guys in the league are just backups. This current scenario is why the Giants should have given Webb some snaps in live action at the end of last season. This is a business and it relies on a full 53 man roster to be game ready. You dont let your starting QB decide how the game should be played.
In any event, we currently have an opening for 2nd string QB. I would say that Webb better prove that he is capable or he will find himself as 3rd string and if you are 3rd you may not make it on to the final 53, plus I believe he still has eligibility for the practice squad so there is that option for the Giants as well. No one is going to pluck a QB off a practice squad if they have looked really bad.
I am rooting for Webb and Lauletta to show really well in the preseason so hopefully we can get a starter out of one and some picks for the other. Its a goo problem to have.
