Question about tomorrow's game and Webb

joeinpa : 8/16/2018 12:38 pm
Given the state of the Giants roster, I was in favor of getting the next young quarterback in place.

I m not trying to spark the same quarterback debate here, although I m certain that s where it will go. But before it does maybe I ll get my question answered.

While I don't equate preseason to team performance come the regular season, I do subscribe to the idea you can learn things about individual athletes and what they have to offer to some extent.

Wanting a young quarterback in place, which is what I wanted, seems reasonable. As the Giants did not draft one, also seems reasonable to hope one of the young guys on the roster might be the guy.

A longway to get to my question:

How many think Webb s performance tomorrow night, good or bad, is significant. I do.
I think the whole preseason is important
PatersonPlank : 8/16/2018 12:42 pm : link
not just a specific game. There is also week 3 and week 4 to go. It matters also how much they game plan, who the backup QB's are playing with, etc.
and a good point made by Shurmur is......

...just because Webb has a season under his belt, it should be remembered that this is a new system for him too.

I'd expect to see a lot of improvement, and also some help by the coaches in play calling to get him into some good situations.
does Webb start tomrw

and play most of game then Lauletta?
It's
AcidTest : 8/16/2018 1:31 pm : link
extremely significant.

Webb can argue that the first preseason game was really his first extended action against players who will make an NFL roster. It was also basically his first action of any kind in two years, aside from a few snaps in preseason last year.

But the starters typically play at least a half of game three. The Giants also want Lauletta to get some snaps. This game is therefore Webb's best chance at extended action in the preseason with at least some of the veterans.

arcarsenal : 8/16/2018 1:34 pm : link
Yes, it is very important. Webb needs to show that he deserves to continue to get chances. Doesn't need to be perfect. Just make a few plays. Lead a TD drive. Complete 60%+. Show some poise and better mechanics.

Hopefully see Eli for an entire quarter and change.......

Then I'd go to Webb thru the 3rd quarter.

If Webb struggles again, and our draft pick shows poise again, even against scrubs....there could be a move on the depth chart.

To at least light a fire under Webb................
Big game for Webb

Poor showing and I think the Giants need to start thinking about giving Lauletta more of a look. I hope Webb does look better. I can't see the Giants going with Lauletta as a backup to Eli this season.
Webb is fortunate to even be on the team
Go Terps : 8/16/2018 1:57 pm : link
Giving him Lauletta's snaps even now is a disservice to the Giants. Against Cleveland we did not get a proper look at the second and third team offensive players because Webb was incapable of operating the offense.

It shouldn't be allowed to continue.
Arc is right and I will add

I want to see how he responds after last week. QBs suck sometimes how do they respond.. Niw he’s been good against Detroit in practice. He needs to translate that to the game. I want to be able to say he has a chance to get where he needs to be. Not a finished product. We will all see it. Lauletta -what I “saw” was possibly legit NFL QB but maybe only backup level. It’s a perception I’m sure not accurate but what I want to see from Webb is “hey we may have something here”.
Ah Terps, showing your keen insight

as usual by over reacting. Thankfully, Coach Shurmur disagrees with you. Anyone who judges by ONE game would have canned Eli after his debut years ago. Patience is a virtue. He may in fact be a washout. Know way to know yet.

No one is judging by one game. Read his college scouting reports.
The coaches see him day after day after day...
CT Charlie : 8/16/2018 2:49 pm : link
Shurmur will be content to see him all season long in practice, hoping DW or Lauletta won't be needed for another year or two. Tomorrow is another piece of the puzzle, another small step on the journey, not the puzzle or the journey itself.
Joe, I think you misspoke

The Giants did draft a QB this year, Kyle Lauletta

One poor preseason performance by a young QB that has very little experience with the O, and some of you want to kick the guy to the curb. I bet a lot of you don't get second dates. (8)
I think the preseason
Gman11 : 8/16/2018 3:18 pm : link
is vital for Webb. How can the Giants count on him if Eli gets injured when he can't complete a simple 5 yard pass? I know if I was the coach and Webb shows me nothing, I'd be damned if I didn't go looking for a vet on cut down day.

Brown Hornet - I posted scouting reports on the other Webb thread. The same fundamental problems are brought up on each of them.

One was a clear cut 1st player in the draft that multiple teams coveted.. others is Webb who was passed on by every team in the league.. When Webb couldn't take the field last year after the Eli Benching fiasco.. I knew everything I needed to know.. Webb isn't made out to be an NFL starter..
He Needs to Improve Over the Course of the Preseason
OntheRoad : 8/16/2018 3:40 pm : link
to the point where he can be seen as a legitimate heir to Manning. If not, Lauletta will get more consideration.

what did Webb do in the last preseason game last year?
I only think its important that he look better
Jimmy Googs : 8/16/2018 3:52 pm : link
than last week. And hopefully it gives him something to keep building on thereafter.

Otherwise the coaches might lose confidence in him at the rate that many of you all have already reached...

We get it, you think it’s a waste. So why is Shurmur playing him? If it was as clear as day that he has no shot, the guy who knows a lot more about football than you do would pull the trigger.

The HC and GM that drafted Webb are gone. What’s the reason he’s not cut by now since he’s that terrible?

I have no idea. Ask Shurmur.
Haha, ok

good talk
Yes I believe this game is important for Webb. Can he translate what
Blue21 : 8/16/2018 4:26 pm : link
he does in practice to a game? He looked good in preseason last year as I recall, especially against the Patriots. Last week was so bad he does need to show improvement. Shurmur mentioned this in one of his interviews that he expects to see improvement. One thing Shurmur has mentioned over and over about Lauletta is his calmness. If Webb doesn't show improvement and Lauletta continues to show it he could jump ahead of Webb although I think that is unlikely this year. I really hope Webb lights it up.

Fortunate to be on the team? How do you figure?

One preseason game doesn't make a career, nor is this coaching staff going to jump to conclusions.

If he tears it up this week, what's that mean? Again.....not too much.

To me, it's about seeing how the guy progresses practice to practice, and game to game.

Horrible play calling I guess that’s Shula's job as OC

This is one thing I worry about is Shula calling the plays

Rooting For Webb
Jeffrey : 8/16/2018 6:21 pm : link
I have no idea whether Webb will settle down and play to his strengths, but I thought accuracy was not a problem for him in college and so I tend to think last week was mostly about nerves. I am not confident that you can coach arm strength, which is why I worry more about the other QB option. Hate to see the Giants take the deep ball out of their game-plan as they did the past couple of years.

Wish they had taken a QB in the first round, but time to move on from that and trust the GM and his talent evaluators' judgment.
It’s very significant
UberAlias : 8/16/2018 9:41 pm : link
Webb was drafted by the last regime and the new regime just drafted a QB. Eli is the starter, so preseason reps are all he gets. If you accept it was nerves last week, then the next question is, how does he respond. He’s playing for his career in the league.
Trrps...
Brown_Hornet : 8/16/2018 10:03 pm : link
... after I posted I saw that you had posted clips from the links I posted here.
Absolutely the concerns are there but they're not in each one and each one seems to have a few things that are unique.
Regardless I'm an optimist and a football coach so of course I always believe that if the talent is there and the kid is willing to work... there's a chance.

That said I've been burned. You may very well be right.

That said I'm Pollyanna until the coach makes the decision.
When he moves on, I will.

That's how I root.
Err...

His performance is definitely
Gregorio : 8/16/2018 11:35 pm : link
significant. He likely won't see the field much in the regular season, so this is his chance to show what he can do. Let's hope last week's performance were just first time jitters.
Tonight might look like last season.....

No Barkley or OBj, and a questionable OL....

That Lion DL couldn't touch Eli in Practice....I think they will tonight...
The guy is fighting for a Job so every game is significant
Rudy5757 : 8/17/2018 4:34 pm : link
He can easily lose the 2nd string to Lauletta who played better than Webb in the 1st game. After this game, if Webb again plays poorly and Lauletta plays well I could see a flip in the pecking order to see how Lauletta plays with the next group.

Maybe Webb is just a backup type. Plenty of guys in the league are just backups. This current scenario is why the Giants should have given Webb some snaps in live action at the end of last season. This is a business and it relies on a full 53 man roster to be game ready. You dont let your starting QB decide how the game should be played.

In any event, we currently have an opening for 2nd string QB. I would say that Webb better prove that he is capable or he will find himself as 3rd string and if you are 3rd you may not make it on to the final 53, plus I believe he still has eligibility for the practice squad so there is that option for the Giants as well. No one is going to pluck a QB off a practice squad if they have looked really bad.

I am rooting for Webb and Lauletta to show really well in the preseason so hopefully we can get a starter out of one and some picks for the other. Its a goo problem to have.
