much of success in football is just about knowing and executing your assignments. All the talent in the world can't make up for not doing that correctly.
He bit Hard On that arrow route
What gave me a little rose colored glass comfort was how he ran down the fueld after with some speed... kind of gives me hope hes not slow like he looked
Not sure why anyone thought Ogletree was some kind of savior
Teams will pick on Ogletree in coverage. I wonder if our continued problems with coverage at LB increases the chance of Tae Davis making the team. I think he played some safety in college, so he might have more natural coverage abilities than most of our other LBs.
has no lateral ability. His feet are too slow to play tackle. Teams know this, and act accordingly. At this point, I'd like to see Wheeler or even Jerry at RT. How can we properly analyze Webb if he is being hammered?
has looked good on this drive. He has been under pressure and made good throws. Even the ball that slay got a hand on was a nice throw and slay had to reach up to get a hand and make a play that would have resulted in a Td. Very impressed as opposed to last week. Good for him so far
Webb had a good week in practice against Detroit. So far its translating. He looks relaxed and is just playing which is what he needs to do. The OL is going to struggle on 3rd and long
Lots to unpack here tomorrow. Cant wait for the review.
Gallman with a mistake and makes up for it with td Webb looked good .
Great amount of film for them to view. 17 plays!!!!
Nice job!!!!!
yes not matter how it ended that is a drive they will analyze all week. ALOT of plays but alot of quality catches, throws, reads. also some protection breakdowns. really good film to teach with. love it.
nice TD drive by Webb. A terrific throw on 3rd and 17, and some other nice passes, including the second one to Engram under duress. His scrambling ability was also evident. He was in command of the team.

I think the best thing he did on that drive might have been yelling at the ref to get fug out of the way when he was trying to get the QB Sneak set up & called.

i agree! that was very peyton manning, brady esc. showing awareness and wanting to get it off before detroit had a chance to creep up. even if its a small boost in success percentage. liked seeing the fire! great drive overall if you consider last week
What's with the radio announcers?!?
First they said Wayne was fighting for the 3rd spot (he is making a good claim for 1st backup to Sayquan).
Then the Diehl said Gallman's problem at Clemson was that his running style limited his yards after contact. Wayne led all major college backs in YAC!!
Yeesh!
good by Webb. The third down pass was high, and it looked like he made the wrong read on fourth down.
Youre kidding right? The receivers route left a lot to be desired on that play. Allowed Slay to make a play on the ball. Should have had his body between the ball and Slay. The pass was there.
That was a terrible call...he didn't even hit anyone, certainly not with his helmet...seemed more like he was trying to avoid a hit/tripped over the OL...
Five yard passes on third and ten. Is that a left over play from last years offense?
sometimes it is jjst to get closer to field goal range...
Ill defer to you guys. Its still preseason. Dont want to see too much of that when the live bullets start flying.
so, youd rather force a low percentage pass and punt than collect points?
C'mon, let's not be obtuse. You all know what I mean. During the course of so many plays last year we would throw short on third and long. and not what we should expect to see every game. They are absolutely ruining the game. There is no way to make a violent sport safe. What they are doing is turning this into something OTHER than football.

is it possible the ref was flagging Herzlich's helmet-to-helmet contact at the beginning of his rush? Both he and the blocker were at fault, but they definitely smacked helmets hard.

On the broadcast Im watching, Spielman noted they went fasemask to facemask with neither player dipping his head. Said should have been a no call. He said the leagues study saw 0 concussions from that kind of contact. I think its a preseason message call.

Not perfect but looked like a viable backup.

Stout against the run.
Solid tackling.

The two slants were a bit high. One was on 3rd down where Raymond clearly beat his guy and the one to Latimer that came out like a knuckleball.
But much, much better this week. Offense had some rhythm.

on should be the guy for us to wear it.
The problem is Collins's arm talent made up for some of his deficiencies. Webb just has the deficiencies.
The throw to Shepard on third down was really good, but the problems are all still there. Hitch in the release, bad footwork, fading back while he throws instead of stepping into it. Not good.

Ok, yeah. I thought the ones a bit behind were worse. But even so, good job. Good zip, ball comes out quickly.
Moves nicely too.
Ogletree hasnt been good in a few years. It got masked by his high tackle totals. Kirk Morrison 2.0.
lmao. youre out of your mind....average 100 total tackles per season isnt bad. and been bad the last few years? he has been in league only 5 years...so when are you talking he has been bad?
in 2016 he had 136 total tackles....
i mean i normally agree with some shit you have said but sell that bullshit somewhere else. he is a very solid LBer.
Dave Te Thomas said Ram players told him Ogletree's play suffered once he started wearing the helmet to set up the defense, he felt Goods

He was throwing balls 2 yards away from receivers in the 1st game. Obv hope we don't need to see him this year, but glad we have some hope for the future after Eli. And glad the O has looked decent without Eli/OBJ/Saquon, our 3 biggest weapons. Keep em healthy in preseason.
D has looked very good overall, and getting some nice pressure. We've looked good against the run in both games so far, though we have let up a few big plays. I guess Ogletree isn't as good as I thought in coverage, though I guess he's doing some good against the run (without re-watching hard to be sure). Nice to see a few plays from some of our depth guys as well. We needed a bit of a boost after a disappointing last week.
Dave Te Thomas said Ram players told him Ogletree's play suffered once he started wearing the helmet to set up the defense, he felt Goods

I thought Tree was a real good cover LB. havent seen it.
From what I have seen so far, he does not have the instincts to cover a TE/RB. His footwork, angles.. everything.
Looks like he has cement feet. Hope im wrong. Reminds me of Carlos Emmons. Good player who was done when the Giants got him. Remember what NFL stands for. Not for long!
I wasn't a big fan when we signed him, and he hasn't looked great so far. Besides the fact that we have better options, and RB is one position where older vets tend to not help much - let the young guys run the rock. Maybe he contributes something in the locker room, hoping our GM had some reason? But yeah, definitely would rather see about 3-4 guys get carries before him.

Stats, especially tackles dont tell whether a player is good or not. Tackles are largely a part of scheme, talent around you and luck. The way the rams play he was cleaning up from the holes Donald made.
Morrison had 4 straight years of 100 tackles in Oakland and then was out of the league in a year afterward.
If Ogletree was so good why did the Rams, who spent a boatload this offseason, move him.

Ogletree is fast. He was beat because he bit on an inside move, and he's a linebacker. He's not explosive enough to recover from that and change direction.

im sorry but "bad" players dont make 100 tackles...
"bad" players dont have as many pass break ups as the best LBer in the game
there could be a NUMBER of reasons he was moved.
relationship erosion or tension
money
scheme fit
again, i am not saying he is LK, but lets not make it sound like he has played at the level of a scrub. he is by far the best backer we have had in many years. it was a good move for giants...
Tackles aren't a good way to claim a defensive player is good.
You get a tackle credit if you allow a 5 yard run then tackle.
he has been a solid complete LBer during his career. again, is he great? no....
but he is the best we have had in a while. if he has some coverage flaws, thats life. he isnt keuchly
I have no problem with him. But I knew what he was when they traded for him. I think people assumed big contract = star, and he's not. He's just overpaid.
Seriously though, while it's only preseason and playing against the backups/3rd string etc, it's nice to see our #2-3 QBs actually make a few plays. It's been a while...

yea he isnt a star, but still the best we have had in some time. he will be fine. its not like we havent had LBers who were bad in coverage lol. he is just a piece on the defense.
On the broadcast Im watching, Spielman noted they went fasemask to facemask with neither player dipping his head. Said should have been a no call. He said the leagues study saw 0 concussions from that kind of contact. I think its a preseason message call.
I heard that and it struck me that there was a widely publicized report earlier this year that a focus on concussions alone is misplaced.
Repeated, sub-concussive blows to the head have been associated with CTE. cnn - ( New Window )
Ogletree is probably overpaid and definitely not a star LB...but we didn't give up a ton (and his contract was part of that), and he's still a better LB than most of what we've had here the past few years. I'll settle for an overpaid solid LB who accrues 100+ tackles over the season and anchors the run...even if he isn't great in coverage - though I admit I was hoping for better than we've seen so far. It's been a real weakness of our D, covering TE/RB...
During halftime I watched a minute of Browns-Bills,
and the Browns caused a fumble with a perfect helmet-to-ball shot on a runner. (Bills recovered.) The defender was, in effect, spearing the ball, but there was no flag and no discussion by the announcers.
he is an attacking linebacker, my guess during the regular season you will see collins or riley on runningbacks and tight ends with ogletree blitzing...
giants have been playing a lot of base and when you are in bas linebackers are in man
Thinks a QB should step into his throw with 3 guys about to smash him. I like when guys have no idea what they are looking at.
Ajr- Since Im not an expert I go by the eye test. You can tell if a guy looks like he can play or not. Tonight Webb did.
and the receiver immediately turns and holds his hand up to the ref for a flag....modern NFL there. That was probably closer to being flagged on the O than D - the defender beat him to the spot
was as the FS with the starters? Results look good, and I didn't notice him (which can be good for a FS), just wondering if anyone had any details on his play.
Our DL has looked pretty good and some solid depth as well, which is good to see.
I can recall seeing 2nd and 3rd string offense and defensive lines play this well. We have some nice depth on this roster. If we can pick up some serviceable CB we will be strong
and 6 LB for a 4-3, so figure maybe flip that to 6- DL and 8-9 LB....they can probably keep about 4 DE, though if you get 1-2 guys who can shift between DE/LB than you can skew the #s. But yeah, there might be some tough decisions at DE - don't forget Mauro is out for the 1st 4 weeks though, and I don't think he'll count against the roster (though I'm not sure of the timing of when that take effect, etc).
I'm honestly surprised that out of all of the RBs Reese has drafted since Bradshaw he's the one that sticks. I remember BBI being a lot higher on Perkins and Andre Williams.

Williams came in with a great college resume at least. Gallman was a solid back who played in a winning program, but I didnt think he was particularly special in the draft. But he sure looks like he spent the winter getting better. With his ability to catch, he has to be the #2 RB. Honestly the odd man out here is Stewart, but he probably stays purely due to the contract.
#Giants Kerry Wynn was an elite special teams player in 2017. He had a 90.5 overall grade which was good for 2nd in the NFL among players with a minimum of 100 special teams snaps. #BigBlue
Bettcher is punching them and bodyslamming them and all sorts of physical shit. Wynn came in and totally bodyslammed him. Bettcher started cracking up.
the way our D seems to swarm to the ball. Too often last year, it seemed like there was one guy, and if he didn't make the tackle, no one else was on screen. Just seems like more guys swarming the ball this year.
Also, for our questionable 2ndary depth, haven't seen too many blown coverages so far in preseason. And the ones we have seen seem like more LB than CB
We shouldn't over-react to this game, just as we shouldn't over-react to last week's crap fest. But just nice to see good play from a number of places, and encouraging signs from several younger players (including our 2 young backup QB's)...and especially the lines. OL has looked solid all around, and the DL has been pretty darn good...

Except if last week didnt mean he couldnt, than this week doesnt mean he can.
Lets see him put together back to back good performances.
I'm not convinced Gay makes the team, as a CB or S. I liked the signing when we made it...but I've been surprised by a few guys so far. That said, there's still 2 games to go, and regardless the coaches see way more in practice than I know about. Just happy that we haven't seen a complete lack of talent in our secondary depth so far...I'm hopeful with our safeties between Collins/Riley/Thomas/Adams/Thompson and maybe Gay, and we've seen some of the young CBs seem to do OK (Deayon/Johnson/Webb).
Cockrell from last year, I thought he was decent when our team had basically given up at the end of last year. He's hurt now anyway, but I felt like he would at least add some competition for depth. Secondary can be tough to judge from a fan perspective, especially just watching games live...but we haven't had big lapses or looked terrible so far.

Agree. Horrifying how he holds a football.
Halapio gave up pressure inside
-BBI this week
yea much more poised...not throwing high darts
no...he had ONE bad play. otherwise just average
solder got shit on.
engram is pretty special
i know!!! plus RBs not getting hit as soon as they touch the ball...granted not huge holes but at least we are moving forward
Stepping up into the face of the rush.
Webb doing everything he needed to so far after last week.
The Last two years offense brain trust was a fucking disgrace
Horrible signing at his salary.
Guess we can hang up on Bridgewater now before he answers the phone
Ye
Ah. And he should have scored on that sneak. He sucks.
I know right?!
FINALLY
all the times i want stewart out, he should have been in there lol

giants got the look but dude made a great play. glad the first team OL still out there, i hope they play rest of half. they need the work
On the 3rd down slant
Robinson looking good as well.
him tomlinson and snacks is a VERY large group and they all move decent for their size...
our run D should be good this year and our run game offensively should be solid. those are two important things needed to win in december and jan

trying to get into rosas range....
i agree we want a first, but taking 5-7 yards and trying a long field goal isnt the worst thing.
Very similar delivery. Hopefully more mobile thought because Collins was a statue
sometimes it is jjst to get closer to field goal range...
It's a checkdown because his main reads were covered. Some times you take what you get and punt it.

may not be a three down backer anymore? on third down passing d, he may have to come out for guy who is better in coverage.
i mean it isnt easy to cover reddick in the open field, but he has looked bad in coverage two weeks in a row

Not perfect but looked like a viable backup.
The two slants were a bit high. One was on 3rd down where Raymond clearly beat his guy and the one to Latimer that came out like a knuckleball.
But much, much better this week. Offense had some rhythm.
Actually the RB was the one who lowered his head
But what the heck is going on with Ogletree?
Ogletree hasnt been good in a few years. It got masked by his high tackle totals. Kirk Morrison 2.0.
From what I have seen so far, he does not have the instincts to cover a TE/RB. His footwork, angles.. everything.
But what the heck is going on with Ogletree?
Dave Te Thomas said Ram players told him Ogletree's play suffered once he started wearing the helmet to set up the defense, he felt Goods
on should be the guy for us to wear it.
The throw to Shepard on third down was really good, but the problems are all still there. Hitch in the release, bad footwork, fading back while he throws instead of stepping into it. Not good.
OBJ and Saquon arent even on the field an we lead a 60+ yard drive.

1. Pass blocking was very good
2. WRs made plays
Webb had three outstanding throws. 3rd and 17 to Shepard. Crossing route to engram. And deep by to Shepard. Still threw a little behind and high in some throws.

Ok, yeah. I thought the ones a bit behind were worse. But even so, good job. Good zip, ball comes out quickly.
Moves nicely too.
Werent you in here last week telling people not to over react to one preseason game.
He looked better, still a ways to go

lmao. youre out of your mind....average 100 total tackles per season isnt bad. and been bad the last few years? he has been in league only 5 years...so when are you talking he has been bad?
in 2016 he had 136 total tackles....
i mean i normally agree with some shit you have said but sell that bullshit somewhere else. he is a very solid LBer.

We needed a bit of a boost after a disappointing last week.

wow thats interesting.
He was always meh in coverage.

Looks like he has cement feet. Hope im wrong. Reminds me of Carlos Emmons. Good player who was done when the Giants got him. Remember what NFL stands for. Not for long!
Quote:
But he was still supposed to be able to run. He looks lost in coverage.
He was always meh in coverage.
he has around the same pass breakups as keuchly
while i agree he isnt amazing and doesnt produce INTs as much, he has been good his entire career

Be objective.

im sorry but "bad" players dont make 100 tackles...
"bad" players dont have as many pass break ups as the best LBer in the game
there could be a NUMBER of reasons he was moved.
relationship erosion or tension
money
scheme fit
again, i am not saying he is LK, but lets not make it sound like he has played at the level of a scrub. he is by far the best backer we have had in many years. it was a good move for giants...
he has been a solid complete LBer during his career. again, is he great? no....
but he is the best we have had in a while. if he has some coverage flaws, thats life. he isnt keuchly

You get a tackle credit if you allow a 5 yard run then tackle.

I have no problem with him. But I knew what he was when they traded for him. I think people assumed big contract = star, and he's not. He's just overpaid.
Longest run by a Giants QB in 14 years.

yea he isnt a star, but still the best we have had in some time. he will be fine. its not like we havent had LBers who were bad in coverage lol. he is just a piece on the defense.
I heard that and it struck me that there was a widely publicized report earlier this year that a focus on concussions alone is misplaced.
Repeated, sub-concussive blows to the head have been associated with CTE.
cnn - ( New Window )
Davis Webb tonight
14-20, TD
Also, 6-6 on 3rd down.
MUCH better.
giants have been playing a lot of base and when you are in bas linebackers are in man
Ajr- Since Im not an expert I go by the eye test. You can tell if a guy looks like he can play or not. Tonight Webb did.
Nice job defense!!!
Blount is a very tough runner.
Our DL has looked pretty good and some solid depth as well, which is good to see.
Nothing that was obvious. Seems like everyone made it out okay.
I was just guilty of that myself
:-(
It's an unfortunate side effect of the sport with how bad injuries are.

gets hurt I think to myself "at least he's not important".

Simmons being evaluated for a concussion
That is the one position group where there will be some difficult cuts.

Also true for RB, as Martin is showing right now.
Yeah. I love the way he plays.
Agreed. Nice drive!
Tough because you have to load up on linebackers.

Cut Stewart and go with Barkley, Gallman, Simmons, & Martin
Magnificent.
Dont hold your breath. But one TD and we are over 30.

Giants announce that Russell Shepard is out with a finger injury. Appeared to have to get it popped back in on the last series.
Love that.
I also dont want to see Barkley or OBJ before Jax.
Best news about tonight is no injuries.
I hope so. He is so incredibly slow.
yes, giving him a chance to get some game film, so maybe he can catch on somewhere else after cut here...
the guy practices like everyone else, he deserves play time to show the league what he can do
Also, for our questionable 2ndary depth, haven't seen too many blown coverages so far in preseason. And the ones we have seen seem like more LB than CB
Easy now. Lets slow it down. Lol
Webb was much more on target with his passes tonight and showed excellent command of the offense, especially on that long drive.
Also how did the NBC announcers not realize it was a forward pass and not a fumble by Webb? It was obvious.
OMG, broke 30 points!!!
Eric!!! Points!!!
Did they just say Tanney has been with 14 teams since 2012? Thats crazy.

Like what I see from Simmons and Martin. Right now, one should make it instead of Stewart.

I forgot what happiness + viewing a Giants game .... felt like.
This place swings from one extreme to another.
Ajr- Since Im not an expert I go by the eye test. You can tell if a guy looks like he can play or not. Tonight Webb did.
Except if last week didnt mean he couldnt, than this week doesnt mean he can.
Lets see him put together back to back good performances.
jenkins
apple
gay
bw webb
johnson
are my 5 corners at deoyon if you count gay as a Safety
Sy hasn't had a chance to do too many wins.
Yeah, one of the stupidest rules allowing that to be a TD..

Webb looks like he had a good game based on the stat line, how was he?
Quote:

Agreed.
From an arm standpoint, agreed, but I think Webb is more mobile than Collins.
Barkley, Gallman, Odell, Shepard, Latimer, Lewis, Sharp, Rudolph, Russell Shepard, Etta-tawo, Raymond, Engram, Ellison & Adams is just a ridiculously talented group.
