Another atrocious penalty

Jags/Vikes - ( New Window )
My interest in the NFL has really declined signficantly
Jay on the Island : 8/18/2018 4:05 pm : link
over the past 2-3 years and this is just another perfect example of why. That is fucking absurd to call a penalty on that just as it was last night to call it on Herzlich.
I kinda feel bad for the officials
j_rud : 8/18/2018 4:07 pm : link
It's not like they asked to be saddled with an ambiguous rule that's open to interpretation.
What was the explanation
Peter from NH (formerly CT) : 8/18/2018 4:09 pm : link
For that as a penalty.
This is terrible
mrvax : 8/18/2018 4:12 pm : link
for the game. That was a nice clean tackle. They probably should have thrown the flag at the right tackle.
My buddy has a theory.
robbieballs2003 : 8/18/2018 4:13 pm : link
He thinks the refs are throwing all these flags to emphasize how ridiculous these rules are hoping the rules get clarified more or they are told to officiate them differently. The refs don't want these judgment calls. They like black and white rules not things that need to be interpreted. EVERYBODY knows these calls are atrocious but it isn't the refs fault.
I think the NFL needs to seriously consider an on-site reply official
Ben in Tampa : 8/18/2018 4:15 pm : link
Sitting in a booth who can instantly review every illegal contact penalty and buzz down to the field to waive it off if necessary.

The NFL SHOULD do everything it can to eliminate dangerous hits, but the refs just aren’t able to make those bang bang judgement calls.
Haha. Wow
BigBlueShock : 8/18/2018 4:17 pm : link
That may be the worst I’ve seen yet. Pathetic
I was thinking during the game last night
arniefez : 8/18/2018 4:25 pm : link
that I'll always watch and I'll always root for the Giants but that the current NFL isn't worth getting excited or upset about. The game has pretty much been ruined at this point and is at the mercy of completely incompetent officials calling arbitrary penalties whenever they feel like it. If the penalty on Herzlich was the correct call maybe it's time to reconsider continuing to watch.
This is a terrible..
FatMan in Charlotte : 8/18/2018 4:30 pm : link
rule that is definitely going to impact the game. Just look at the Herz penalty last night. Took away a sack and extended a drive.

I actually think the refs missed a few penalties of that kind and when they did call them - it was incorrect. The Lions slot WR ducked down to try and drive for yardage without a flag and then one of our RB's did the same thing in the 4th quarter.

This rule is going to be called way too subjectively to be effective.

I Am Preparing Myself
Capt. Don : 8/18/2018 5:03 pm : link
For these new rules and their interpretation to cost the Giants at least one win. I guess I am just hoping that they are the beneficiary of a bad call, which is a shity thing to "hope" for.

NFL football. These owners are dying the product. All good things come to an end. We are watching the fall of the Roman Empire.
Soon they will eliminate kickoffs
Jay on the Island : 8/18/2018 5:37 pm : link
The league thinks anthem protests are the issue for the decline in viewership but it's bs changes like this.

This. There is no divine reason that the NFL is becoming shitty (at least with regard to subjective rules and officiating). And there is no reason that the commissioner has to make the wrong decision on every single PR related issue. It just is. New leadership would help.
I get just as upset seeing these things during non-Giants games.

So true however Vince Mcmahn has a opening now I know a lot of people are mocking his new football league but if his league just brings back 90s early 2000s football rules and tells his officials to swallow their whistles with some of the calls we see on Sunday his league might have a chance to survive and flourish with a NFL that is self destructing its product in front of our eyes.
We definitely are watching the league implode...
EricJ : 8/18/2018 6:31 pm : link
it is happening slowly so you really do not notice it as much.

First, we saw the TV viewership numbers decline.

Next, you are going to see season ticket holders slowly giving up their tickets.

Finally, there is a whole new generation of kids that simply have other interests now. I have a son and a daughter and they are both in their early 20's. Over time, I have asked ALL of their male friends which is their favorite NFL team. ALL of them said they do not even watch football.
This is all about...
M.S. : 8/18/2018 6:42 pm : link

...liability.

NFL continues to build a case about how they're protecting the players.

Your friends a real genius. They are throwing more flags now so players keep it in mind when the season begins. You will not see personal fouls called like these in the regular season

To be fair, and this isn’t defending the NFL by any mean, it is a disaster, but if you ask those same guys about any other sport whether it’s baseball, basketball, hockey, etc. they will likely tell you the same thing. The younger generation just has different interests as you say. We could also debate whether some of these other interests are a good thing or not, but that’s a topic for another day, lol.

I agree with you on that too. The other sports will suffer as well. However, the NFL is also killing itself and the rules are just one piece of it.

The other sports have a different problem. They have far too many home games and disposable income is not what it used to be.

Should they start making the players sign a waiver to play a contact sport in which they make millions?!
It was for driving qb into the ground
Jon C. in MD : 8/18/2018 8:03 pm : link
I just watched the actual play with referee explanation and replay on NFL Gamepass. The call was for driving the qb into the ground. Which is what I thought it might be from the brief twitter clip.

It’s a questionable call. But it’s not totally atrocious.
when the best argument for a rule
bluepepper : 8/18/2018 10:06 pm : link
is that they won't enforce it during the regular season then you know it's a crappy rule.

So it wasn't the ambiguous "lowering the head" rule it was the ambiguous "driving guy into the ground" rule. Great stuff the rules committee is coming up with the last few years.
The point about younger generations is so true

Anecdotal, but I deal with many kids. Their primary spectator sport is watching gaming streams on twitch.

Thanks Jon for clarifying it for everybody on this thread.

Still an awful call as it was not "driving him down". The QB was flat-footed and he got run over by a big hit. Nothing more.

I guess the only real safe sack nowadays is the bear hug where the whistle blows and you the defender lets go. Good luck doing that with all QBs though as some of them are big guys.

Best strategy going forward may simply be get the ball out and focus less on the big hit...

I mean if that’s a penalty and you can’t hit low I’m not sure how you can sack the QB. If you’re running forward and the target is stationary your body weight is going to land on them. It’s physics.

Aaron Rodgers rule
Jon C. in MD : 8/20/2018 8:52 am : link
I didn't realize this was a new/modified rule. I thought it was the same rule that went back to Tony Siragusa flattening qbs during the Ravens 2000 run. Just saw this article this morning in Washington Post about the "Aaron Rodgers" rule. It talks about this exact Jacksonville/Minnesota play from this thread.
