NGT: Today I learned Jim Brown was a real POS

jamison884 : 8/19/2018 3:31 pm
I'm posting because I saw him recently talking to Baker Mayfield and giving him some advice (on Hard Knocks I believe). He's well before my time, but he came up during a Wikipedia session and I'm not sure if this history is well known by some younger football fans.

Wiki:

Quote:
In 1965, Brown was arrested in his hotel room for assault and battery against an 18-year-old named Brenda Ayres; he was later acquitted on the charges.[35] A year later, he fought paternity allegations that he fathered Brenda Ayres' child. In 1968, Brown was charged with assault with intent to commit murder after model Eva Bohn-Chin was found beneath the balcony of Brown's second-floor apartment.[36] The charges were later dismissed after Bohn-Chin refused to cooperate with the prosecutor's office. Brown was also ordered to pay a $300 fine for striking a deputy sheriff involved in the investigation during the incident. In Brown's autobiography, he stated that Bohn-Chin was angry and jealous over an affair he had been having with Gloria Steinem and this argument is what led to the "misunderstanding with the police."[37]

In 1970, Brown was found not guilty of assault and battery, the charges stemming from a road-rage incident that had occurred in 1969. In 1975, Brown was sentenced to one day in prison and two years probation, and to pay a fine of $500 for beating and choking his golfing partner Frank Snow.[38] In 1985, Brown was charged with raping a 33-year-old woman.[39] The charges were later dismissed.[40] In 1986, Brown was arrested for assaulting his girlfriend Debra Clark. Clark refused to press charges, though, and Brown was released.[41] In 1999, Brown was arrested and charged with making terrorist threats toward his wife. Later that year, he was found guilty of vandalism for smashing his wife's car with a shovel.[42] He was sentenced to three years' probation, one year of domestic violence counseling, and 400 hours of community service or 40 hours on a work crew along with a $1,800 fine.[43] Brown ignored the terms of his sentence, and in 2000 was sentenced to six months in jail for refusing the court-ordered counseling and community service. He was released after 3 months.[44][45][46]

Two things:
1.) Don't put a political line in a thread, especially one that has nothing to do it.
2.) If that is what you think, you are the one needing to take a history lesson.

Hsiwilek is right and history proves his point. It’s the Dixiecrats that left the Democratic Party for the Republican Party because LBJ pushed forward with the Civil Rights Act in the 1960’s. These “Dixiecrats” were documented racists and didn’t want racial equality. They all come from what are now notoriously known as red states. Any idea that the Republican Party today and the one that Abraham Lincoln was a part of have anything in common is absurd and flat out wrong.

People will probably look up LT on wikipedia and 20 years and say he's a POS, heck people may do it now.

If you have the POV that none of these guys are role models, and they are not here to satisfy for your moral requirements then you will not find yourself conflicted. The gladiator comparison isn't perfect, since football players are well compensated (at least relative speaking) but apart from that "are you not entertained?"

I'll stay away from the rest of the comments, other than to add a passive aggressive "there's a ton of stupid on this thread" much from the usual suspects.

Not BS at all. Democrats during Lincolns time were much more into keeping taxes low, less power to the government and TOLERATED slavery for the most part.

Republicans were a newer party that were OPPOSED to the abolition movement in an effort to garner votes from Southern voters.

Lincoln was integral in the formation the Whig party which is what became known as now a day Repubs. The true shift to progressive thinking for Democrats Im pretty sure was during Teddy Roosevelt's run.

I cpuld be off a little, but the point remains. No BS at al.
I dont view this as a "political fiscussion" per se

Jim Brown clearly had rage that related to...

the treatment of African Americans in the civil rights era and beyond. He was one of a handful of top professional black athletes who was very verbal on that, along with Kareem, and Ali, and Bill Russell. He also had other rage, which he took out on women. Rage type 1 in no way excuses rage type 2. Frankly, I think he should be castigated in some fashion for type 2, even now.

Maybe he should be sent to live with ex-priests in Pennsylvania.

I'm a registered Repub (for now, at least) and a huge fan of Lincoln, but to equate today's party with that party is just obtuse. And yes both parties gloss over (to put it nicely) their history and development but let's call it out on both sides.

Back to the real topic, I did not know all this stuff about Jim Brown. Thanks for the heads up.

The Dixiecrats really came to the forefront in the late 60's early 70's.

I know politics are off limits here, but the fact there's open ignorance about what the parties had as certain principles really helps to explain some of the divide

Quote:
The States' Rights Democratic Party (usually called the Dixiecrats) was a short-lived segregationist political party in the United States. It originated in 1948 as a breakaway faction of the Democratic Party determined to protect states' rights to legislate racial segregation from what its members regarded as an oppressive federal government. Supporters assumed control of the state Democratic parties in part or in full in several Southern states. The Party opposed racial integration and wanted to retain Jim Crow laws and white supremacy in the face of possible federal intervention.

Other usage of the term usually pertains to pre-Southern Strategy southern democrats, who started to move away from the Democratic Party with Johnson and Brown v. Board of Ed. .

This book won the Lincoln Prize and is as well sourced a book as you will ever read. No matter how much you think you know about this period, this book will blow your mind, challenge your perceptions and give you a deeper broader understanding of US history.

Brown grew up in a very racist and in part twisted society. I knew Brown slightly but knew some of the players he played against very well. Brown took huge physical and verbal abuse but he returned it. In college he went out with “white”girls which just inflamed the surrounding racist context. Brown grew up in a violent football world, he was formed by these things. Personally I didn't like him or his college days posse, but I wouldn’t jump to today’s hyperbolic POS.

The historical discussion in comments above is so wrong and misleading that it is not worth commenting on. There is throughout this country unfortunately a huge lack of historical knowledge and understanding. Many of the posters would do well to read history, and not look to popular music as a guide.

I mean, the subject matter in the post is #metoo and Gloria Steinem is mentioned.

Anyone who thinks the GOP and the Democratic parties have the same positions as they had in 1865 has a screw loose or is being willfully wrong. Come on.

As far as Jim Brown goes, he was,and is, a complex figure, but I think the poster above who said "he was for human rights as long as you weren't a woman" summed it up quite well.

And yeah, he would've been destroyed under the modern media microscope.

That many of the celebrities, sports heroes, etc. (those generally put up on a pedestal because they entertain us) are completely different beings when they are out of the spot lights and think no one is watching. The people you see on the screen/tube are seldom the same person in real life; and some are just down right evil-assholes.
