I think this defense is primed for a big, big bounce back season. The two areas that concern me are CB (Apple remains a huge ? mark) & Ogletree. He looks, thus far, like a huge liability in the pass defense. Hopefully that can be corrected before 9/9.

Eagles secondary last year was worse than ours this year. The key is up front and allowing Lando to be a missile.

Bettcher's scheme is going to cause more confusion for offenses. The keys will once again be health. If they stay healthy, especially Snacks, Tomlinson, Hill, and Vernon, then this defense should be much improved. The DL should keep the LB's clean which will allow them to roam free.
The wildcard IMO is Carter. If he can turn that potential into performance then we are in good shape.
Or if the plan to have him cover RBs and TEs man to man is the liability.
I was wondering the same thing. If an offense has a slow blocking type tight end, I can see covering him with a linebacker, but Ogeltree on a quick tight end doesn't seem to be working.

I dont think the LT (from Ohio State) was even able to get a hand on him, and #77 (first rounder from Arkansas) was abused.
Vernon seems like someone who would be better off not playing through injuries. When he plays injured he is just OK. When healthy hes a disruptive player. This may seem obvious. Still it just seems like some players dont lose their effectiveness when injured and others do.
BJ Hill! Watch, before the year is over, he will go down as the finest Day Two draftee in this class. The rookie class will also see Lorenzo Carter have a bigger role as the season continues.
As for Ogletree? The Rams regarded the move to ink him as a mistake, basically because there seems to be blockage between the ears. Tell him what to do & you have no problem vs. the run, but if they make him call D signals? Oh boy! Goodson is the logical leader & should have that responsibility.
Vernon, Martin, Barwin & Carter will bring enough edge heat, but Hill is a run-stuffing demon who will absorb everything snacks puts in front of him.
RE: Vernon beat the Lions #1 2016 and 2018 picks on that play

Dont discount scheme, coaching, and completely different attitude across the board as the likely factors. May be right about the injury, but the other factors are ones that seem more obvious to me.

He was kind of a misfit on the strong side with the extra clutter and battling a RT and TE.
Will LB in a 3-4 standing up and with more space is best for him.

He and JPP played to many snaps. Period. They rode those guys to death. LT was u like any other player ever. OV has looked great All Pro t times and on others not so much. Injuries happen to all players. But they needs to rotate guys in and never did. Lack of depth which is on Reese and I assume lack of trust by Spags. Either way I think Betcher rotates him more so he can be fresher. The whole D. They played Harrison too much too. This D looks to rebound. How much will decide the season as much as the O not sucking anymore either
Times an
that Snacks has performed up to his contract, of the big 4....
OV is a top player....his only problem is staying on the field.....and not just staying on the field, because when he plays injured, he is not the same player...

Collins and Jenkins are studs as well.
Agreed. Was impressed. Looked really strong.
