for example, see below. Along with cheesy 80's commercials. Link - ( New Window )
Wow, I wonder why I don't remember this game better. Must have been huge at the time. The 6-2 Cowboys who had beaten the Giants twice the year before and in the '86 opener and the game goes down to the wire with Cowboys in game-tying field goal range at one point. I must have been sweating bullets over this one. Maybe I wiped it from my brain due to the brutal ending - a total penalty fest in the last 2 minutes.
And jeez the commercials were awful in that era, though it's cool to see Lee Trevino - people forget how big he was in the 70's and early 80's.
With so much attention on LT by offenses at that point
Carl Banks was the best player on the field for our defense during that super bowl run. There were some plays in the playoff game vs SF where he essentially tackled the TE trying to block him and the running back

You are so right! When I argue for Banks to be in the HOF, I pull out his DVD.
...wow, I'd forgotten about that. It seemed that EVERY backup QB in the NFC East would play like an All-Pro against the Giants, didn't it? Pueller was excellent that day - the pressure he faced was as nasty as it gets - an absolute clinic by George Martin late in the game, and Joe Morris at his best - over 180 yards on Monday against the Redskins, come back 6 days later and do the same to Dallas. Bananas!
We were so lucky to be able to enjoy that defense - bizarre level of talent.
Made so much more fun by having other dynamite teams in the division. The NFC BEAST.
Not nearly the least of which being ... holy crap, how many penalties would have been called in just the first 4-5 series if we went by what we are seeing in the NFL this pre-season (and even in recent years)?
Pat Summeral's quote says it all at the 26-minute mark: "White was hammered."
I think that would be a penalty on Carl Banks. Even Madden says "Carl Banks is coming, see, right in his face, and he hits him square."
...a wild game, crazy amount of turnovers - Giant pass rush as great there as it's ever been, HEAVY blitzing, LB's, Safeties, even Perry Williams coming multiple times.
Still, Pueller was never flustered.
Giants knocked Danny White and eventually Herschel Walker out of the game - vicious hits in both instances.
Rafael Septien absolutely befuddled by fierce stadium winds that day. Ball hooking viciously.
Simms didn't even complete 10 passes. Still enough to win. Amazing game.
were done early in the season. Beat us in the opener but not a factor after that. Surprised to see that in fact they were 6-2 and tied with NYG and Wash halfway thru the season. And they almost beat us at home in this one. Turns out they collapsed after this game. Only won once more the rest of the way. Danny White got hurt but honestly he was clinging to his job at this point anyway. Pelleur was probably just as good. The Landry-era Boys were running on fumes in '85 and '86 with a temporary lift from Walker in '86 but damn, Landry could coach and he kept them competitive in a tough division.

Was at the game with my dad; remember it like yesterday.
The one thing truly profound is the passing of time.

great video.
don't like those white pants though.
The white pants were much, much better with blue than the ugly gray things they've worn since 2000.

Some really fascinating stuff.
