NFT: Random Question - Board Games

UConn4523 : 8/20/2018 8:45 am
looking for some game night options with the wife and/or friends. There’s a ton out there, it seems like they are making quite the comeback, so I don’t know where to start. Reading reviews online and found a few that are intriguing. I think my main criteria is something that can be finished in 1-2 hours tops and makes you think but isn’t extremely strategic or confusing.
Apples to oranges

And scattegories.
Here are a couple I like and we play at home
Heisenberg : 8/20/2018 8:52 am : link
Betrayal at the House on the Hill
Ticket to Ride

The first can be a bit complicated the first time you play. The second is easy for anybody to pick up. Both are fun
Oh and for Adults

pretty fun, some strategy and doesn't take that long.
Nice, gotta look these up today

been reading about Akrotiri and am very intrigued, anyone play it?
Wits and Wagers sound like something you'd like

I am a big fan of Betrayal at House on Hill, which has a horror theme.

Countless others are out there, but they often have genres like fantasy, "Lovecraftian", etc.
For most games, there is a youtube initial play session out there

I second Ticket to Ride. Fun game.

How about card games? My wife found a couple that I thought were fun, and with a group, could be a really good time. The first is called Exploding Kitties and the second is Sushi Go. She found them both on Amazon, and they are both easy to learn, fast paced and with just enough strategy to be challenging. Also, won't interfere with table conversations.
There is a series of card games called Munchkin
Moondawg : 8/20/2018 9:09 am : link
that my family and I enjoy. They have a good sense of humor and are fun. All sorts of themes, sci-fi, fantasy, etc.
Betrayal looks fun
UConn4523 : 8/20/2018 9:13 am : link
only issue is that it doesn’t look like it’s that good for just 2 players - is that the case?
Most games are more fun with 3+, Betrayal included
Moondawg : 8/20/2018 9:17 am : link
Wits and wagers is fun for 2, though.
We do drinks and board games with some friends

and there's a couple that are really pretty easy to grasp and fun to play.

My personal favorite is Splendor. It's really easy to pick up, after one game everyone will totally get the hang of it, and it's really fun. Ticket to Ride is another favorite. We played Codenames the other night. it's fun, but it depends a lot of knowing the other person and being really creative with wordplay.

For a coop games, I'd recommend Pandemic. It's a little bit more involved though, and if someone doesn't grasp it, the whole group suffers.

I like a lot of classics.

Parchesi (sp?) Is fun.

Love connect four for some quick games.

There is a game called Dirty Minds that is pretty funny. There is a word and it is described using dirty phrases and the other person has to guess what it is. For example:

I love to move in and out and in and out.
I make you foam at the mouth.

What am I?

The answer is a toothbrush.
I think we around the same age(I'm 42).....

We love The 90's game. It's just like Trivial Pursuit, but with just the 90s. A lot of fun with couples around the same age.

Would second Pandemic
HomerJones45 : 8/20/2018 10:25 am : link
everyone gets involved because the players need to cooperate in order to win the game.

Settlers of Catan is another. Non-violent, must make trades with other players. Social game.

Let me add an oldy but goody: Acquire. Easy to learn, can play with a lot of people and cheap. I think you can pick up a copy for $15.
If you have watched the show

Here are the rules to True american.

Quote:
So, it's 50% drinking game, 50% life-size Candy Land. -Jess

Well, it's more like 75 drinking, 20 Candy Land, and by the way the floor is molten lava. -Schmidt

It's actually 90% drinking and then it's got a loose Candy Land-like structure to it. -Winston

Also I am big fan of "What Did you Meme?"
True American - ( New Window )
Taboo

Great game, but you'd have to play it over the course of weeks
Already mentioned above...

Codenames is great, everything you want in a game.

I’ve been looking that up and found the duets version as well. It would most likely be just the 2 of us so I’m leaning towards giving it a shot. The full game is really meant for teams, right?

Yea, it's meant for teams of two, but they have directions in the game for modifying it if you just want to play with 2 people. I'd say it's probably less fun, but it's still a fun game.

I would say it's probably not a good game for 2 players. But the fewest I've played with is 3. It's ideal for 4-5, IMO
Pandemic was mentioned and is good
Heisenberg : 8/20/2018 2:14 pm : link
but with that one everyone wins or no one does - it's cooperative, rather than competitive. And for my game nights, the kids and I prefer to win while crushing the dreams of others, lol.
