NFT: How to lower my Verizon bill for TV, Internet and Phone?

Grey Pilgrim : 8/20/2018 6:50 pm
Hey,

Anyone have advice for getting a lower contract from Verizon? I'm currently paying $235 and they are offering $183 for a two year contract.

How much of a discount can I get if I tell them I'm cancelling service in order to switch to Optimum?

Any help would be appreciated.
are you still in a contract? any early termination fees?

If not, you used to be able to "move" to the same address and get offered the new customer deal (which should be much cheaper). Just fill out the form on their site for moving.

Technically you can still "move" if you have an etf, but you will have to pay it. I did it to get upgraded to there 1gig plan earlier this year.
In the past I've called up and said I'm looking at other services

And because I've been a customer for "x" number of years, they'll give a $15 or $20 credit for a year. Haven't tried it in a couple of years but it worked for 2 or 3 years.

Now, I'm thinking about whether I really need HBO and Showtime (I don't) and am considering dropping them - I barely ever watch them.

Not ready to totally cut the cord as we do watch a variety of things and (at least as of now) the sports coverage isn't as good, but until then I'm with you and continually looking for ways to shave the bill. If you get a good customer service rep, he or she will help you.

I have to look, but around the same as you. It's too much, especially with all the other options out there.
I just got off the phone with Optimum...

They have a 'premium package' that has all the same channels for $142.95!

2 years no contract.

This is gonna be tough for Verizon to beat.

That being said I think I prefer Verizon all things being equal.

i recently got Spectrum

to lower my bill by researching what Verizon was offering and speaking to the "Cancels Dept" and telling them I was ready to leave.
You have to be prepared to follow through

I called to cancel service (was paying 250 for triple play). They offered me a slight discount, I said I wanted the offer new customers get (gigabit, cable with one premium channel, and phone for 87 bucks plus equipment fees).

Went through with the cancelation, one week later they called and offered the intro rate. Now I have triple play for $127. (87+20 for dvr, 10 for extra box, and taxes) Gigabit internet is insane. I may drop TV and land-line and just stream.
Call and be honest
Shecky : 8/20/2018 7:34 pm : link
Everyone does the BS “I’m cancelling”. They work in a call center and hear it all day. Be different. Be nice. Be honest. And the best way to get what you want from them, blame it on your wife.

If it’s a guy, he appreciates the pain. If it’s a woman, she appreciates your thoughtfulness. Call them by their name “hey X, I need you to help me out. My wife just saw the bill, and went nuts on me. She had no clue how much we pay for everything. Anyway, she called XYZ company and they offered her ABC packs for $x. I’ve been with you for X years and really, really don’t want to switch. What can you do for me, so I can convince her not to make a mistake and switch to XYZ?”

Works like a charm. Every time.

On the bill and you can get new customer deal(put wifes name) or disconnect and “move” i do this every time my contract is up. I rent so I just have to send a new lease agreement in.
I want to just get GIgabit FIos

The only way to win is by leaving.

Charter removed $15 in promos from my account. I asked for them to be reinstated. Charter refused. So, I left them.

3 weeks later I'm getting flyers in the mail for $60 in promos! If you value your money, just leave. You'll get a much better offer once you do.

$235/ month is highway robbery. It's that sort of apathy that makes these companies richer than they deserve to be.
Get rid of your premium channels
eclipz928 : 8/21/2018 8:01 am : link
cancel your landline and use your cell phone, return cable boxes you have in rooms you don't use often, get a lower internet speed (most people don't need more than 50MBs), and bundle with a smaller lineup of cable channels. Look up existing customer promotions online, and if you can't get them when you sign up through the Verizon website call and ask them for it.

If you can't part ways with things like HBO or your landline, then nothing to say except that you're stuck paying what you're paying.
I just canceled Optimum, and they offered to cut
Section331 : 8/21/2018 9:17 am : link
my rate by $30/mo. It was still cheaper to pay their absurd broadband charges and go with YouTube TV, but threatening to cancel should get Verizon to come down a bit.
Republic Wireless for phone got my 5-phone family under $140/mo...

...cut the land line long ago - ditched Time Warner / Spectrum cable TV - fuck em - digital antennas get most major channels, currently using Sling for other channels.

Still stuck with Spectrum for internet though.

I'm planning to do this as well
RinR : 8/21/2018 12:06 pm : link
A Vz wireless rep told me you can basically customize the TV channels you want to receive and significantly reduce your TV monthly cost. You dont have to pick one of their packages.

They are doing this in response to Netflix, Amazon, etc.

I do not plan to threaten them with leaving because I do not want to go back to Comcast which sucked.
My experience with Verizon FiOS
Matt M. : 8/21/2018 1:38 pm : link
has been that threatening to leave has done nothing. They don't have a retention department. They have one central customer relations department that is only authorized to offer the specific available deals of the moment. Their comments to me about switching to Spectrum (my only wired alternative) was go right ahead. They may offer more channels and faster advertised internet speeds in similar price points , but Verizon knows the Spectrum service is inferior, unreliable, and won't generally provide the maximum speeds advertised.
cut the cord

And they said the best they can do is $200 a month.

Anyone have any experience with Optimum? How's the internet speed etc?

Your best option is to play "The Game" and switch cable providers every two years with FIOS and Optimum. This way, you always get the new customer discounts locked in for 2 years at a time.

Paying $200 for FIOS is ridiculous!

Verizon FIOS new customer deal for Gigabit Internet, TV and Phone is $79.99 locked in for 2 years.

Optimum new customer deal for 200 MB Internet, TV and Phone is $89.99

If you're willing to switch every two years, you would be saving a ton with their new customer packages.
Thanks guys!

Any other opinions about Optimum?

The thing to keep in mind about the FiOS new customer packages is that the TV portion is generally the most basic, which is why the package is so cheap. I realized that after I signed up, but haven't upgraded. I am much happier with the speed and reliability compared to Spectrum (then Time Warner), so I don't want to switch. But, as a result I've been without some channels I really want (mostly sports programming).

To upgrade the TV package they wpuld force me to upgrade the entire tdiple play at about $40 more per month. To simply add a sports package, it would also run about the same because regional spkrts broadcasting fees (or something to that effect) are tacked on.

I can save money and get more channels plus DVR plus faster advertised speeds, but Spectrum sucks. When I had Time Warner, my cable went out once a month and interned was kut every 2-3 weeks. Granted, it's usually just for a few hours. But, in a few years with FiOS, I've had cable go out once and reboot the modem once (the router a couple of times).
