Stu Cowan & #8207;Verified account @StuCowan1 3h3 hours ago Just woke up to learn #Habs have traded captain Max Pacioretty to the @GoldenKnights in exchange for Tomas Tatar, Nick Suzuki and a second-round draft pick in 2019. Habs announced trade in email at 1:08 a.m. #HabsIO |
more wings won't help a team who needs C's and D's.
IMO Max is like a better Rick Nash.
Max can play top line minutes and score like a top-liner, he can play PP, PK, and he's a locker room leader. He can be physical and even drop the gloves (though rare).
He's a core player on a winning team.
and Brett I agree awful Montreal off-season. they are easily in the Jack Hughes sweepstakes. Weber out until Christmas, 2 of their top 3 scorers from last year were traded on an offensively challenged team, and not much depth.

Bergevin should have been canned awhile ago. I think he's done a really poor job in recent years.
Our teams need lottery luck to be able to compete in the near future (IMO).

I think he was doing fine until a couple seasons ago, and then it went down hill. It started with the Subban trade. Downhill from there. I still like Trevor Timmins though, one of the best head scouts in the game.
Subban trade (MTL loses)
Drouin trade (MTL loses)
Galchenyuk trade (MTL will lose IMO)
Pacioretty trade (MTL will lose IMO)
Taking Kotkaniemi over Zadina (I won't even mention anyone else since Zadina was the consensus at #3) (MTL will lose IMO)
and the signing of Carey Price off a bad/injured season is sort of the cherry on top.

B's in China, split squad between there and games over here.
Fair IMO.
SJS and LVG the two "leaders" in the Karlsson sweepstakes.

Word on the street suggests trade talks involving Erik Karlsson have intensified again in the last 24-36hrs. Told negotiations ongoing & Sens exploring current options. Weve heard this all before, but with camps about to start, we shall see if this saga finally comes to an end.
Yeah...yeah, but hey, none of our first rounders this year played in the tournament
LOL.
MTL did the same in their rookie tourney, I watched one of the games they were crushed by OTT (4 - 0?) and Jake Evans was hospitalized.
OTT had a lot more of their top prospects, but regardless they looked a lot better than MTL. And Tkachuk looked better than Kotkaniemi.
Enjoy the post-Karlsson era!
Davisian, should he read this, can suck it!
As for who they got...Suzuki has awesome potential and should be a CENTER. Ive read nothing that says otherwise. Tartar has scored 20 goals I believe 4 of the last 5 years so it isnt like he is chopped liver and he is only 27. I agree, he didnt have a good year with Vegas but this is a new year, new team. He could play solidly.
I believe the draft pick was a second, so that aint too shabby. Correct me if Im wrong.
I think the trade will be a win win for both teams.
Hahaha

I don't think I'm in the minority at all. I was terrified when I read reports that Pacioretty and #3 were being discussed for Ryan O'Reilly.
I think most Habs fans like Pacioretty and wanted him extended, but also recognized he just had his worst season.
Suzuki is not a center. Period. He's a wing in the NHL, he'll be a good one, but he's less a center than Drouin. If the Canadiens put him at C it's because they're desperate, like with Drouin.
People forget Drouin set the juniors record for points by a center in the QMJHL (at the time, not sure if it still stands with like 106 points in 49 games for something like that). He too is not an NHL center.
I prefer this trade for Pacioretty than the one for ROR discussed at the draft, but yes it's clear MTL is solidly in massive rebuild mode. They should have gotten a 1st for Max and had LVG keep Tatar. I don't hate Tatar either.
problem is Shea Weber and Carey Price are Canadiens for the next 7 years at massive $$$ and both appear to be oft-injured and/or in steep decline.
Most rebuilding teams don't have that amount of albatross for that long.
Hopefully, he's under contract for a few more years at a big number for his production.
LV retains some salary. Not a ton, but something like 10% each year.
What's shocking is LVG sent a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd to DET for Tatar at the deadline.
I guess all things considered it's not a bad trade for MTL, since they really had no leverage.

All of our teams are going to be bad until at least 2021/2022. We need some humor to last through then.

Jon warned him about investing with Mychal Kendricks, but Amtoft must have convinced him otherwise
I meant the Sens/Habs/Rangers, but now I'm sad about the Giants again.
Jack Hughes right now is the next Patrick Kane, and I didn't always think that, but he is IMO.
he's got skills.
FWIW, from a Canadiens writer (and former NHL scout)

This time I think it really happens. Karlsson will be dealt in the next 24 hours.
11:54 AM - 13 Sep 2018 from Ottawa, Ontario
Maybe a separate thread, but not sure since only Andy is a Sens fan and I've never met a Sharks fan.

Sources say the #Sens have dealt Erik Karlsson to the Sharks in exchange for Chris Tierney, Dylan DeMelo, Josh Norris, Rudolfs Balcers, 2020 1st, 2019 2nd and two conditional picks.

That is awesome. And a big contract, but for a great player.
Back Injury forces Zetterberg to Retire - ( New Window )
I don't think he makes the team.
Loved his skill, 15 years with one franchise is a rarity in sports these days, hard to believe he passed Fedorov in points
Fedorov in 1992-1993 (?) had one of the best seasons I've seen since outside of Gretzky/Lemieux and he was awesome in Sega hockey.
Zetterberg always seemed to ride Fedorov's coat tails to me, but passing him in points says a lot.

Degenerative back condition that doctors say will not get better. One of the guys in the League I've enjoyed watching over the years. Wound up 5th on the Wings all-time goals, assists & points lists. Injuries suck. Back Injury forces Zetterberg to Retire - ( New Window )

Fedorov and then Datsyuk, always felt like Zetterberg was the beneficiary of playing with some insanely skilled linemates.
Zetterberg winds up with more points than both. Never would have though that.
Give Max some love - ( New Window )
Thanks 5bowls, I've seen them all, mostly reinforcing all that I said, and complaining about Bergevin.
MTL is a tough, but rewarding place to play, only you need to seal the deal to be rewarded (most of the time - fans almost unanimously loved PK), and it's been a while since the Canadiens sealed the deal, so the fans are prickly.
And 5bowls you might be right, Suzuki may be a C, but I believe it's only because MTL is so desperate for C's.
He played wing the past two years in minors, it's rare IMO for a player to be deemed a wing in minors and the move to C in the NHL, it's usually the opposite, but we'll see.
I don't think Suzuki starts in the NHL, he should, but MTL won't start him there. They'll get him some minors time at C.

Who was the last Montreal centre who people might say was a top five C in the NHL? Was it Beliveau? He was the last Habs C to make a year end all-star team in 68-69. Hard to believe that they've been looking for the elusive True 1C for 50 years.
