heard a few highly rated sports shows today ridiculing the Giants for taking Barkley and not Darnold, and how Eli showed yesterday why he is done. Meanwhile, Darnold has yet to play a down in a regular season game. Go figure...
but we're years away from determining if it was a mistake. Do the Giants make another run with Eli? Is Darnold an Alex Smith/Kirk Cousins type of QB or an Eli/Big Ben HOF-type of QB? Do the Giants find a QB in the next couple of years who's a suitable successor? Lot of these same critics declared Eli a bust in 2006, and said Coughlin needed to be fired - nobody has the answers.
I know this, Barkley put us in a position to come back yesterday, with a dynamic run.
He's done everything right to date. Yes, if we go 5-11 this year, we probably should have just moved on to Darnold because we are not in win now mode. But that's a big if.
For now, our pick did well. Cannot worry about what's going on elsewhere.
A rookie QB (without Barkley) behind that O-Line? Â

I think this is the right way to approach the situation. It’s probably too early to tell, but like you say a 5-11 year it would be really hard to explain to the fan base why the Giants didn’t just start over with Darnold. I’ll say this, Eli didn’t do anything yesterday to calm the start over crowd and the didn’t do anything for his supporters to point to as proof the Giants made the correct decision. There’s 15 weeks to correct the situation.
about the direction. Based on the moves & the age of the QB, deep run in the playoffs should be the expectation. 8-8 would be a wasted year in my opinion.
Anyone who commented that Eli showed yestersay why he is done Â
barkley did not have a great game because he got stopped on a few runs and then ripped off a 68 yard run so his stats looked better...he said he doesnt want a running back like that and then said sanders was overrated because of it...
does he realize that is how a lot of running games are? you pound and pound until you break a big one...
I really wanted the Giants to draft Darnold, but I also love Barkley as a player. I view Barkley as the better pick for immediate success, while Darnold would have been the pick for the future.
Regardless of what I or anyone else wanted or would have done in April, this is a silly debate to have now. At the earliest, we won't have any clue for at least 3-5 years after we see how Darnold, Barkley, and whoever replaces Eli develops. That's at the earliest. More than likely, we won't know for 10+ years after Barkley hangs them up, and possibly more if Darnold is still in the league. Even then, we may not have a concrete answer.
and rightfully so. I wanted a QB and felt the selection of any RB at #2 was a colossal waste. So this is certainly going to play out right before our eyes with Rosen, Darnold, Allen and even Jackson.
and seeing his potential is as advertised and being excited to have a player with that kind of talent on the Giants. I still believe the Giants blew it and should have picked Darnold. If he was the 1st pick I would have been more on board with Barkley, although I probably would have rather had Rosen, but when Cleveland passed to take Mayfield the Giants had a gift and they gave it to the Jets. We'll see.
about what the Giants should've done in the 2004 draft without any real definitive answer, and that's nearly 15 years ago. The 2018 draft won't be a Sam Bowie/Michael Jordan decision in either direction.

You must have choked watching Barkley's 68 yard TD run.

No. I thought it was a great run.
However, I do root for his success - I am a big PSU fan - and hope he kills it. But I am firm that the better investment under the conditions at Jints Central was to take the franchise QB prospect...
That doesn't mean I don't think Barkley isn't talented, or that I won't be cheering for him.
The worry is just what is going to happen in the next 24 months as Eli's career comes to the end, or closer to it.
Everyone that was around for the '93 season saw Simms leave on a high note, and the absolute devasation of the next 10 years until Eli came along.
The Oline needs more talent, so trading up in the '19 draft to get a QB will mean more FA money towards veteran Olinemen, OR the QB waits another year while they fix the Oline through the draft. Tough choices.
are drafted each year? And how many of those turn out to be just that? Darnold is one? Who the hell knows? Nobody. There is a long list of high first round picks that didn't amount to much. Id Eli does suck like some say, we'll be getting high picks for the next couple of years. The Giants will get their guaranteed "franchise quarterback" then.

On the other hand, the overwhelming majority of QBs who have been HoF/SB-types have been first rounders.
The math doesn't lie - your odds just get worse trying to find your franchise QB in later rounds...

Or because of Barkley and OBJ and they build a pretty good defense - we'll be just good enough to be decent but not good enough to draft one.

Calm down.
Beat Dallas and they will be saying it was the right move to draft Barkley.

I think that is the conventional wisdom amongst some of the insiders...

I predict a couple of candidates will emerge as the top QBs .......
