Q: ??
A: You’re right. I’ll get better next game.

Q: Two of the first three plays were penalties on you. How tough is it to start a season like that?
A: It’s part of the game, ups and downs. Got to go to the next play.

Q: What positives do you draw out of yesterday? Obviously you lost your man down the sideline or down the line of scrimmage on Saquon’s run.
A: It’s cool, I’m just trying to get better. The other things, just try to play more consistent.

Q: What do you feel like you have to do better?
A: There were a couple of plays were I just need to – let’s just say more consistent. Let’s just say that.

Q: Were you disappointed with yesterday?
A: No, I think I did some good things, but I think there’s some things I need to work on. It’s part of the game.

Q: Coach Shurmur defended you today and said you had a lot of good plays, obviously a few you’d like to have back, but had a lot of good plays. What does that mean to have your head coach, a new coach, kind of defend you?
A: That’s good. That’s great, it feels good. Got to get better.

Q: Is your confidence level the same coming out of the game as it was going in?
A: Yeah… Next play.

Q: Was there anything about playing on the right side that…
A: I mean it was my first full game at right. Probably the best rushers yet that I’ve played at right, so it was a little different, but got to get better and move on. Go on to the next game and continue to work at it and get better at it.

Q: Any specific plays you wish you had back?
A: I mean any play that I thought I could’ve been better on. Yeah, that’s pretty much any player.

Q: The pick six, was someone supposed to help chip him that play?
A: No, I actually had the …, so the linebacker came, I was supposed to pick him up. He came and then he left, so I stepped to get him and then I had to pop back out last minute. See what I’m saying? I had two people inside first.

Q: So you kind of misread what he was going to do?
A: No, he came and then he left. You get what I’m saying? He came, so I had to step down, but if I blocked him and didn’t get inside, then I’d be wrong. It was kind of a hard play.

Q: Remind me, did you have help – did you have a running back on that side or a tight end?
A: No, it was a duel, so I got inside out. So I got that linebacker – I got the inside and the outside, so if that linebacker comes I got to get that linebacker and I got to get him. I can’t block the end. If I block the end, then he comes free and then I’m wrong, so he came and then he left. So he ran and then he popped.

Q: You got a lot of criticism for that play. Do you think that’s unfair?
A: I don’t really care what a lot of people have to say about this and that. I care about what my coach says and the people next to me and that’s all I really care about. If he feels like I’m wrong on that play then, yes, I’ll take that, okay coach you’re right. But if somebody else who’s not really in the room, doesn’t know the play, doesn’t know what we’re doing, doesn’t matter to me.

Q: What did he say about the play?
A: He said he would’ve did the same thing. Some things are just how it goes.

Q: Did you see enough from the good plays that you put out there that you have confidence that you can fix the bad plays that you saw?
A: Yeah, I just want to get better, that’s all.

Q: The tripping penalty was that just trying to make sure he doesn’t get to Eli (Manning) at any –
A: Yeah, it was a quick pass so I jumped out there too fast on it. Next time I know what type of player I’m against, he’s not really a speed guy, so next time I’m won’t jump out so fast.

Q: You say you’re playing a new position and your first game is against arguably the best front four in the league. How hard is that to jump into a new position against a team like that?
A: Any new position, it takes time. Just got to get better, that’s all we got to do.

Q: I’m sure you know there’s a lot of criticism of you from the fan base –
A: I could take it, it’s whatever. I’m playing for the dudes in my room, dudes on this team that I’ve been working with all season and I don’t have an issue with it. That’s going to be there, regardless. It doesn’t matter, I don’t lose sleep over it. I lose sleep over what these guys in my room and on this team think about me, that’s it.

Q: Is there any kind of worry that you have to play better or you could lose your job? Are you pretty confident with –
A: You can’t think like that. You just got to go out there and play as hard as you can play and whatever – leave it in God’s hand, that’s it.
I can't wait for this

I imagine the reporter didn't even ask a question. He/she just went like this:

LOL

4 years and 1 game you mean, right?
Speaking of a willingness to improve.
Racer : 9/10/2018 3:12 pm : link
He clearly has put in the effort to improve his cliches. Crash Davis would be proud.

On a serious note, not giving the "so you misread it" prick reporters any extra fuel is a good thing.
Would love a reporter to ask
jlukes : 9/10/2018 3:13 pm : link
"Ereck, why do you consistently drop your head and extend your arms to get yourself off balance?"
Sounds like he wasn’t aware that Calais Campbell
Andy in Boston : 9/10/2018 3:16 pm : link
Wasn’t a power player but more of a spec guy. ?
Yeah, its way too early to judge Flowers
Jimmy Googs : 9/10/2018 3:17 pm : link
you can just see he ready to burst out and become a stud Tackle any day now...
I'm coming around to the pov that he is what he is
Bill L : 9/10/2018 3:24 pm : link
and we need to do better.

Having said that, he did absolutely *nothing* wrong in the interview. He answered every question as it should be answered. People who criticize that are doing it out of their own bias against him.

Isn't that a giant red flag???

How do you not know your opponent??? Is he not watching film and/or reading the scouting report?

A: I miss Bobby Hart

He makes good pancakes

Flowers opening statement
The Reuben Randle of OTs.
bceagle05 : 9/10/2018 3:44 pm : link
I used to count down the days til the end of Reuben's Giants career, and I'm doing the same with Flowers. Can't come soon enough.
Chad Wheeler
AnskyJK : 9/10/2018 4:08 pm : link
Unfortunately what we saw from Chad Wheeler at RT in preseason is he is likely worse than Flowers. I think we'll cut Wheeler and sign a veteran this week.
That was the least informative interview ever

Why even
Joey in VA : 9/10/2018 4:16 pm : link
Ask him anything at this point? He's not good, he's not going to improve, and he gave dumb answers before and now they're worse.
What a missed opportunity by the beats.
Diver_Down : 9/10/2018 4:17 pm : link
Should have started with - "So we see that you have added karate to your offseason workout regimen. Does the cross-training help with your kick-slide?"
He's the best OL the giants have right now
micky : 9/10/2018 4:24 pm : link
You can't bench an all-pro tackle
I know he's had more than his share of bad plays
Poktown Pete : 9/10/2018 4:39 pm : link
And no, he may never get better. It's not his fault he was drafted where he was. I do think the kid has tried. If anything, we should be furious with the brain trust responsible for him being here in the first place.

Now I'm separating the football player from the person when I say this, but, I like Ereck. He's put up with a lot of crap from the fans and the press and has kept trying. Sure we need better play, but threads like FU Erick Flowers? What's wrong with some people?

Agreed.

Q: Were you disappointed with yesterday?

A: No, I think I did some good things, but I think there’s some things I need to work on. It’s part of the game.

The correct answer is yes I need to play better. I will work hard to learn from these mistakes.

He clearly doesn't get it and I cannot wait for him to be gone.

The mentality that led to a large-scale (but obviously not yet exhaustive) franchise housecleaning.

"I'm not disappointed. I did a few good things out there."
Q: Ereck, you've had 3 Oline coaches.
mrvax : 9/10/2018 6:36 pm : link
Why do you still have hand placement and bending issues even into your 4th year?

A: Just move on to the next question.

Plain and simple
Marty866b : 9/10/2018 6:47 pm : link
This guy stinks. If you haven't improved into your 4th year you never will. It's ridiculous that Gettleman didn't do everything he could to replace him. I'd rather have John Jerry at right guard and a competent right tackle to what we have today.
He says he learned
kelsto811 : 9/10/2018 7:07 pm : link
The DE wasn't a "speed" guy from that play. Wtf is film study for? Idk about this guy man

Agreed.

+1.
Get off of him already. He may not be as good as we hoped. But to anyone watching the games with clear glasses it is obvious he's trying. His mentality is the mentality he should have.
The treatment he gets from fans is as atrocious as his play. He's a Giant. Lets root for him!
I think he answered honestly. I also think he tries his best
yatqb : 9/10/2018 8:38 pm : link
and gives full effort; it’s not his fault that he’s not an All Pro. He just isn’t an adequate player. Blame Reese, not him. If he was drafted where Wheeler was we’d put the blame where it belongs- on the Gm for not Ggetting someone better. Of on a guy who is awful but gives 100 percent and should be at best a backup and at worst out of the league.
should be NOT on...

The Giants have given Flowers every chance to show
SB 42 and 46 and ? : 9/11/2018 1:49 am : link
that he can play. They've been a lot more patient with him than they have been with other vets who helped win championships but then their skills started to decline due to injury or age.

They've also paid the kid well based on what he has produced.

The Giants released Seubert and O'Hara, pillars of the OL during the 2007-2008 championship, when they still had a decent year or two left in them. Can't they find even another Shaun O'Hara on the waiver wire?

Even an average lineman would be a standout with this group.

I agree completely. I was never a fan of him at #9, way too unpolished and a lack of intellect and heart to make up for that. And this interview proves just that. He’s simply not a smart kid and got by on raw skills in college. Reese and company should have known it wasn’t going to translate to the next level, like many here did. He’s fine taking the few million he made and drifting off to obscurity. Hopefully the idiot managed it smartly.
Next year is a strong tackle.draft
DavidinBMNY : 9/11/2018 5:28 am : link
The league is starving for tackle play. When was the last top tackle drafted early? Next year has a few really touted OTs. Rising tides float all boats.

The mistake is the reach by the FO. At the time a lot of draft analysts disliked the pick. Everything negative in
Flowers game now, you can pull scouting reports pre draft and it is all there to see.

The way to help him is use more tight ends and minimize 11 personal.

I agree with all of this. Its almost pathetic and completely ignorant the way some fans come down on Flowers without truly understanding whats going on. Just look at that reporter for example. He couldn't comprehend Flowers when he was explaining how he had inside out responsibility. I mean something as simple as that. Then just read some of these comments they can't even comprehend that this is Flowers first game at RT and our OL was up against the best front 4 in the league at getting pressure.

Exactly. And I didn't like Schurmur's answers regarding Eric either. That said, maybe it is too early to bench him and maybe there is nobody better to replace him with.
