The Detroit Lions and New York Jets will start the early game, which typically features the A Team of ESPN announcers. They will get the combination of Beth Mowins on play-by-play and Brian Griese as the color analyst. Laura Rutledge will serves as the sideline reporter.
However, this team of broadcasters wont be the regular MNF crew for the rest of the season. That honor belongs to Joe Tessitore, Jason Witten and Lisa Salters, who will call the second half of the doubleheader: Raiders vs. Rams.
Is f-ing terrible, I'd rather put hot sauce in my eyes than listen to her goofball old fashioned radio guy voice inflections. Unwatchable, unlistenable, well done ESPN.

ESPN is a joke. Thank God the Giants arent being subject to this nonsense. Sounds like someone transitioning.

And I dont care about the Jets either way, but I admit Im jealous of the Jets and their fans because I think Darnold was a great pick. Jealous of the Browns and their fans as well. Its fun to have a new quarterback/future.
No running back in the world can change your franchise like a QB can. I dont believe in just blindly supporting your team. I am a Giants fan but I dont agree with every decision they make, I have a different view of how you should build a team and spend a high draft pick.
Aaron Rodgers like footwork to extend the play, then throw a laser for a first down. He was a teenager in 2018 guys. 20 freaking years old and makes an all-pro kinda play.

I think he's the goods fellas..
Quarterbacking in the NFL is about consistency.Plenty of guys look like all-pro's on 1 play.
Same can be said for the crowd judging him off of the pick 6.
Mobility matters. You don't have to be Lamar Jackson, but the ability to move to create throwing lanes and extend plays is a bigger factor than I can ever recall. It's in this area that I think Darnold can really play.

Hopefully that's a point of emphasis when searching for Eli's successor. A mobile QB would allow for some "playground ball" with Odell and Saquon, and it would be lethal.

Agreed. It's why, if I were running the Giants' draft, one of the approaches I would have considered would have been to draft Barkley and then trade up for Lamar Jackson.
After this new MNF crew fails, and they will and they will be ousted by the end of the season, they will hire Kaepernick.
Its clear they dont care about their product. They only care about appearances.
No they won't hire Kaepernick because they don't want to piss of the NFL again. They will hire a former big name player that doesn't deserve the job instead.
She had the call right on the fumbled INT, even when when the official pointed in the wrong direction.
Ive heard her do college football on ESPN, shes not terrible in my view. I think the crew who did the Giant game yesterday was worse than this one. Much worse
The first quarter of the NFL is really does feel like an extension of preseason. Out of synch all over the NFL. Feeling a little better about the Giants offense (not Flowers)
and defensive lack of fundies, I am definitely not feeling any instant regret over not hiring Patricia as coach.
But he has a pencil in his ear! He's a rocket scientist! Blah blah blah. He'll go the way of all other Belichick gophers. They put up a graphic of Little Bill's coaching tree and it left a lot to be desired.
Why do the networks always put graphics on the field of play images? Its fucking distracting and takes away from the broadcast. Who the fuck sees that and says, yeah, thats a good idea, put that shit on the broadcast?
has great pocket presence, nimble feet, can scramble, reads defenses well, and is generally accurate, even on the run. He keeps plays alive, doesn't panic, and is always looking downfield. Despite the pick six, he's been very impressive.
Announcing right? Its been brutal since the Sunday Night Football crew.
I say it every week 1 Monday Night double header: if ESPN had any balls they'd bring back the three Mikes: Ditka, Golic, and Greenberg. Quite possibly the most unintentional hilarity I've ever experienced, and that game thread was incredible.
Or, I'm just not a homer and am able to admit when other teams' players play well. Geek.
.
Hes playing ok dunking and dunking looks like Alex Smith
Uh huh. Sure.
Dave, I appreciate the hustle of trolling those who want darnood to fail but you're laying it on heavy. I think darnold is gonna be very good, I wanted Barkley tho.
That being said darnold isn't doing much this game. He is throwing short passes, slants and alot of short range combo routes, Easy reads, etc.
This Barkley vs darnold won't be answered for years

He's a 21 year old who shouldn't even be starting yet, and is playing in the first game of his career, on the road, in primetime, with no real weapons.
Considering some said he doesn't even belong in the league, I think he's handling himself quite well, win or lose tonight.

Anderson, enuwa, Pryor isn't awful group
Oh yeah. Great group right there.
Eli hasnt even had HALF the time that Darnold had there to throw
It was a good throw but up until then he was dinking and dunking. All u guys would rather be right than the giants be right. I wanted a QB too but Im not gonna root for the guy just to spite the giants its dumb.
has had three opportunities to make a play -- not easy plays by all means but not OBJ -- earlier in the end zone, another by the sideline and that last one. Hasn't made one yet.

I would rather be right than the Giants? What basis do you have for that statement?

I speak for myself, no one else. And I have plenty of posting history to prove you wrong.
Calm down guy with amazing posting history. Its obvious that some guys(posters on this board) want to be right about Darnold so they can say I told u so and the giants are dumb. Idk why youre taking my comments personally.
Barkley & Darnold are good & both win a Super Bowl or neither win a Super Bowl? I get that these guys will be compared forever, but is that how they're ultimately judged?

Hindsight is perfect vision
We took Barkley. Move on lol
Sorry didn't mean you specifically. I meant like we should all move on

He moved well, threw on the run well, but made a stupid rookie error by throwing cross field. That is the half you are looking for if you are starting a 21 year old in this league, especially the comeback after the pick six shows he has some mental chops. I have no idea what his ceiling will be or his floor for that matter, but I was impressed by him in the first half.
not my point. Of course good Oline play is allowed. It should be allowed on the Giants for Eli, who would be making these same throws Darnold is that youre clearly elated by.
cokeduplt said:
... Im not gonna root for the guy just to spite the giants...
How does rooting for Darnold spite the Giants? That requires magical thinking that somehow "rooting" actually impacts what happens in reality. I just don't get that type of magical thinking that is so prevalent on BBI.
Gonna hurt watching Darnold win titles while the Giants search under couch cushions for a QB for the next 10 years
You should go back to "Justlurking". Even better change your name to "Stayaway"
Making fun of handles is always the wrong way to respond to a point you disagree with. But then again youre probably one of those guys who loved taking a RB over a QB and said something like cant wait to get back to smash mouth football.
You're genuinely asking why someone would bring Eli

Lol
Again, what does this game have to do with Eli Manning?
And I'm the defensive one? Seems like there's some insecurity in here tonight for some reason.
Specifically Darnold who fell in their lap perfectly, and particularly following a 3 win season. Lots of jawing pre draft about no franchise QBs in this draft, etc. Honestly I was shocked at how many shared that POV. Didnt see it then, and continue to see even less the more we see of Darnold. I get that they love Barkley but RB over QB is a questionable call if both are good. And Darnold wasnt even runner up on Giants board, by all accounts. That just seems like a poor assessment the more we see of Darnold.
RE: You're genuinely asking why someone would bring Eli
LOL, if Eli had this same protection he'd be good too!11" just screams of insecurity.
Not understanding this very obvious observation about time in the pocket and then complaining that you cant over praise the Jets QB in peace, screams of insecurity.

What I saw coming out of college was an ultra talented qb, great kid, great personality, everything you could want in a QB....EXCEPT he had a bad penchant for turning the ball over, both via interception and fumble. I dont like qb's who turn the ball over ( see Bortles, Blake), so in spite of all that talent, I was OK with passing on Darnold. I really hope the kid does great, by all accounts seems like a great guy, but im still OK with the decision to pass. Not like NCAA stopped turning out QB's after the 2018 draft,,,there will be other good qb's down the line when we need to draft one.

Exactly. "Very obvious observation." So, what's the point of posting it? No one said the Jets OLine has been trash tonight.
I dont think anyone is denying Barkley is going to be great. But the value of great QB far exceeds that of great RB. For many many reasons.
Okay? And who says you NEED to draft a qb? By all accts niners traded for one. Vikings signed one.
Eagles traded up to get one.
Who is to say we can't get one next year? Year after?
You can turn things around pretty quickly in today's NFL with the right moves. DG felt he was a generational talent....felt putting him with Beckham and Eli would increase Eli's longevity.
I just don't want a situation where fans are like Giants didn't win it all should have went darnold as if that gauranteed us being more competitive the next 3 years.
Again, Barkley was higher on board and they have a QB with big game experience.
Browns didn't,Jets didn't, zona didn't, bills didn't.
And we will see. But lets not forget that Eli has led or tied league in INTs 3 times and is top 10 all time in fumbles. By game average, Im not even sure Darnold threw more picks than Rosen on per game average. I think the turnovers were overplayed with him.
that Darnold puts up huge #s, is a top 5-10 QB each year & goes ringless while Lauletta, Eli's successor, is a middle of the pack QB, but wins a title.
for years? If Eli falls apart over the next 2-3 years they will be a bad team. This means they will be picking high and if they have to they could trade up for one of the QB's.

I agree. People act like this was the last year for 10 years to draft a QB

The 2018 QB class was touted as one of the best in recent years.

But Giants are in the position they were in Ike once in a decade. And when it comes to QBs even the difference between picking 2nd and 5th can be huge.

Agreed, the 2020 class looks strong and the Giants might experience a similar situation to the Rams. They took Gurley and then took Goff the next season. I don't think the Giants will be in position to take a QB next year but the following season could see them picking high in a strong QB class.

You certainly may be right about that. Only time will tell. Jets OLine is doing a fantastic job so far of keeping the dogs off him and he looks great. If he can hold up when those dogs get loose he is really gonna be something. He really knows how to move around and out of the pocket when needed.
But Giants are in the position they were in Ike once in a decade. And when it comes to QBs even the difference between picking 2nd and 5th can be huge.
So you trade up if you have a conviction if one of these guys is a franchise QB. Jets did this March.
Im sorry, but we are a dumb franchise. Darnold has some serious passing skills and is mobile to boot. So glad, we can toil in mediocracy for the next ten years hoping we can suck enough to get another high pick.
"None of the QB's will be ready to play right away"

He looks really good and composed tonight. If I'm wrong about him, I'll admit it, but it's still only one game. I still would rather have Saquon over Darnold and as of today, September 10, 2018, I think Justin Herbert of Oregon may be the better prospect than any guy from this year.

. Sure. If the team is willing to trade with you which they wont if their guy is there and trades are costly.
thing with bringing Riddick in for passing plays is also pretty easy to diagnose by now. Anyone not think they were doing that? I like Riddick but theres a 50% chance hes getting a look every time hes in and Stafford drops back for a pass.

Who do you like in 2020? Just curious.
Because I love Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields but they won't be able until 2021.
right now. Lions getting lit up and, frankly, look very sloppy.
Many Lions fans were convinced the team made a mistake with Patricia based on their PRESEASON performance. This aint helping him...not a bit. Could get very ugly in Motown this year.

Why is this so hard to fathom?
Um, 1. We may not be picking that high and hopefully ont 2. A guy may not be there or the team may not be willing to trade and 3. Trades are costly.
He can move and throw with accuracy. Love Eli. Love Barkley but passing on Darnold may have been a mistake.
I will always be convinced that the Giants tried to look for any flaw in the quarterbacks to justify keeping Eli, thus hampering their evaluation from the start.
That is the dude we should concentrate on for the post Eli era. He's going to be a f*cking star. My good buddy, a UGA fan, practically drools when talking about him.
Hes the George Costanza of NY sports media. Always go with the opposite:
Webb is the next guy
No QB will start as a rookie
NYG will upset the Jags
Me and my friend refer to him as Cokehead Paul because he always has this manic energy when he interviews players on the field like he just snorted a long line

Yes trades can be costly but as we have seen from Eli, Wentz, Goff, Watson, Mahomes, etc it is worth it.

I was really impressed by Kellen Mond of Texas A&M vs Clemson saturday night, and he wasnt even on my radar prior to the season. Thought he really looked good, arm looked great.
Eli actually played well yesterday but it was another classic example of how we need a perfect o-line for him to play. We wont know if Darnold will be a stud for a while but we just mortgaged our long-term future for Eli. I thought it was crazy then and this is not helping. Lol.
You mind telling me last time we had a guy who could take it for 70 on any carry?
You dont pick a RB in the first round. They dont win games for you single handed. QBs do. You can keep all those occasional 70 yard runs. Means little in most games.
Both of their lines looks horrific (and even Flowers had no issue with the Jets DL), they're turning the ball over seemingly every other possession, and their defense is getting no push whatsoever. Darnold has all day to throw and their backs are averaging 5.8 and 5.3 ypc. No better evidenced by that deep ball to Anderson where the Lions defender was right there, could've easily picked it off and let it go right through his hands.
That is the dude we should concentrate on for the post Eli era. He's going to be a f*cking star. My good buddy, a UGA fan, practically drools when talking about him.
I've been drooling about him and Lawrence since last year (senior year of HS). I've heard evaluators say that Lawrence could sling it in the NFL RIGHT NOW. That's unheard of.
Those two are the best QB prospects we've seen in a long time. Possibly since Andrew Luck.
Because they wanted to get Eli a weapon like Barkley, fine. I didn't agree but I understand
But if you were rationalizing the pick by believing none of the quarterbacks were worth the second pick, I thought you were wrong then and stated so several times.
He does, but from a personal standpoint I don't like taking southpaws. Not that there's anything wrong with them, but I swear, each ball thrown by a lefty looks so weakly thrown. It would scare the hell out of me every time. Haha

for me the talent was to big to pass up..
you have to generational talents to help eli and in place for when you do transition to a new qb

I'm in the second category. I wasn't convinced with any of the guys and I thought Baker Mayfield was the best of the bunch. I still think Baker will have the best career of all the QBs.

If the right guy is in the draft and if you are in striking distance to make a deal and if you can convince the team to trade you the pick. Thats a lot of ifs for the future, then if you are lucky you pay the price in picks to make the deal so increasing the risks if you pick the wrong guy. It takes a lot of luck for all that to fall into place.

Thriving behind this Oline the Giants currently have. No Oline, no running back, what rookie QB could thrive in such a situation? Darnold would struggle. He is playing well, but he is also getting terrific support from his team and a nightmarish performance from Stafford

Thats a lot of ifs for the future, then if you are lucky you pay the price in picks to make the deal so increasing the risks if you pick the wrong guy. It takes a lot of luck for all that to fall into place.
i think giants will go a veteran route like the vikings did with cousins...
with barkley and beckham, you are not going to wait for a rookie
I agree. I think thats the plan too.
it can backfire, just like drafting a guy however...

Why not a rookie? Rooks have shown to step in and play..not never had
i never said they havnt or they cant, i jjst think going off of gettlemans moves he is going to want a vet...

So you Nostradamus plan on having 0 to 3 wins in 2020 to secure the picks? Or how do you plan on forcing a team to trade to you?
Because if these guys are as obviously as good as you say then they are going very high.
Eli actually played well yesterday but it was another classic example of how we need a perfect o-line for him to play. We wont know if Darnold will be a stud for a while but we just mortgaged our long-term future for Eli. I thought it was crazy then and this is not helping. Lol.
A perfect O-line? The O-line as it stands might not even be in the top 30 in the NFL.
Eli is going to be our QB next season too & possibly 2020. But when '21 comes around, I'm all in for Fields. I've fallen in love via YouTube clips, Haha.

The league has changed teams don't have to wait long for QB's to develop. Case in point Wentz, Watson, and Goff last season. Mahomes looks like he is breaking out this season.

We'll cross that bridge when we come to it. Shit, look what the Eagles did to get Carsons Wentz...

i agree 100 percent, i never said rookies can not come in and play right away, i am just thinking what the giants might want...
who knows maybe giants have another horrible year and draft a guy this yesr who knows...
my opinion they felt barkley was to good to pass up
Thriving behind this Oline the Giants currently have. No Oline, no running back, what rookie QB could thrive in such a situation? Darnold would struggle. He is playing well, but he is also getting terrific support from his team and a nightmarish performance from Stafford
It is likely the team would have been reconfigured differently.
Perhaps they don't make the specific o-line moves they made. So I can't look at it all in that vacuum of "stick him with this o-line."
But everyone with the Giants wanted immediacy and didn't want to play the long game.
Debate will be going on for years. And NYG got a good player by all appearances.
True, and BTW, it may have very well been possible that the Giants weren't high on Darnold. It was reported that Shurmur wanted Josh Allen. Not sure about DG, but I'd rather have a Saquon vs. Darnold debate over a Josh Allen (or any QB) vs. Darnold debate.
Everyone talking about how brilliant he is. Um, is there an easier job in the NFL than being Hoodies d-co? Fucking 1st game of his career and Darnold is carving up the rocket scientists defense.
Is it fair to wonder if former Pats assistants arent nearly as impressive when they no longer have access to whatever information the Pats are continuously cheating to access?
Debate will be going on for years. And NYG got a good player by all appearances.
yup, who knows what the future holds, everyone thought prescott was a steal..
Also remember how Mark Sanchez was the king of NY after back to back AFC championship game appearances in his first two years.
But it was obvious when it was happening that both Prescott and Sanchez were bus drivers. Neither one showed out as a gifted passer, because they aren't. Dak had the best offensive line in football and a top 2 RB. Sanchez had a great defense and an offense built around rushing.
At least we are not Lions, Bills or Browns fans! You can see the pain in these fan shots. Some of those older guys probably been rooting for this team their entire lives and havent seen a championship. Imagine the Giants if they never improved in the 80's.....no LT, no Simms, no Parcells, no Manning, etc.. no championships......ugh. We may not get to celebrate every year....but at least we do get to celebrate every now and then!

I have a different opinion as to how we ended up draftng Barkley.
1. The Giants really needed a player that could come right in and help improve this 3 win team NOW. Drafting a QB would not pay dividends for a couple of years.
2. The organization got freaked out when they saw how the fans all but burned the stadium down when Eli was benched. I do not think they wanted the potential to have a split fan base over drafting Eli's replacement NOW.
3. The bust factor is higher with a QB than a RB. Barkley was the safest pick from that perspective.
What I would love to know is who the Giants would have selected if the Browns took Barkley at #1.

Love the music as they are going to commercial break

Chubb
Still not a qb because none in "their" opinion a "franchise qb"
The last two QB's to have their first pass INT retuned for a TD were Jameis Winston and Bret Favre. How could it not be Bret Favre.
Secondly the are people who have enough power in the Giants organization to choose a RB over this QB. How is that even possible in 2018? If Darnold stays healthy they are going to regret it for a very long time.
Just another chapter in the Mara's picking players legend. Craig Morton for Randy White has been the Mara fuck up gold standard for over 40 years. It may have competition on it's 50th anniversary. Time will tell.
there is something going on with that team. It may be the he head coach but on the INT, it was noticeable how little intensity the o- lineman had in trying to tackle.
Barkley looked great- I am very happy with that pick
I thought he said he wasnt gonna be Jets fan after he was roughed up at a game?
He is safe going to Detroit for a Jets game. The bad Lions fans are too busy burning each others crack houses down. It is not like Oakland when the fans were showing up with guns and other weapons to the stadium.

Hindsight is 20/20. No one in the media was saying that at the time. Sanchez it started after the honeymoon period but during his first season he was The Sanchize and the second coming. He won his first 3 starts and they sent his shoes to the HOF. It wasnt apparent that he stunk to many until later on.

That's the thing though...I don't think Sanchez was that bad, at least at first. I always thought he was like the Jets version of Dave Brown because he started off well and then got zero help on offense and by his coach as the years went by and the losses piled up

He wasn't bad at all. The team decided to go in a direction where they decided to get "weapons" and become more of a passing team (Holmes, Plaxico, etc) as opposed to sticking with the plan that made them successful the first two years.
Remember the 2011 game (Cruz 99 yard TD)? Sanchez threw the ball I believe 63 times. Sixty f'n three.
It's a trap some teams get caught up in where they decide to build the team around the QB as opposed to just building the right team. The thing then snowballed.
on the road and blew another team out by 30 points! Im sure this JETs team is not a Juggernaut and perhaps Detroit is just a really bad team this year. I think the answer lies somewhere in between.

What the media, especially junk like the post back page, said isnt relevant. Nobody judges players on whether the local newspaper gives him a nickname. Im talking about recognition in the sport itself. Mark Sanchez was never regarded as a special player by his peers or other coaches. Dak Prescott won an award as a rookie and even that was disputed that Elliot should have rightly won rookie of the year. Popularity contests and being recognized for your talent are two different things. Russell Wilson entered the league the same way as Sanchez and Prescott: as a role player on a loaded team. It was evident rather early on that Russell Wilson wasnt simply a bus driving caretaker of the football. The player stood out as exceptional on his own merit.

Its easy to say now just as its easy to say that Darnold looked good because he had all day to throw, got 2 defensive TDs a special teams td and his team ran it down the other teams throat for two tds. Oh and his 40 yard td to Anderson shouldve been picked off. The truth is we dont know yet what hell be but with limited tape to go off of, its much harder to separate player from team including the opposition. If youre telling me that you didnt believe Sanchez during year 1 and Dak during year 1 were strong talents then you were in the minority. Theres a reason the Jets went and got all those pass catchers and changed their offense as another poster mentioned and that Dallas handed the keys over to Dak.
For a Jets fan, this must be "bust out the champagne" time.
What else do you guys have but occasional good regular season games? Not much else.
Wait.... For a 450 post thread, admittedly I didn't watch the game, all of this is over a 16 completion, 200 yard passing performance? That started with a pick 6?
Sanchez started his first regular season NFL game against the Houston Texans on September 13, 2009, throwing his first touchdown pass, a 30-yard reception, to wide receiver Chansi Stuckey. Sanchez and the Jets won the game 247, with Sanchez throwing for 272 yards, a touchdown, and an interception.
Quote:
In his first regular season game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Smith completed 24-of-38 passes for 256 yards and a touchdown. With only a few seconds left in the fourth quarter, Smith was hit out of bounds by Lavonte David, which drew a late hit penalty and the Jets went on to score the game-winning field goal.
The Jets faced the Atlanta Falcons on Monday Night Football in Week 5; Smith completed 16 of his 20 passes for 199 yards and three touchdowns.[72] He completed all four of his passes on the Jets' final drive
We don't know, and we won't know, for awhile. The hype this guy gets, on this board (a GIANTS board), is crazy right now.
I get it, you (figuratively) wanted him. Are we really going to do this every week until he either fulfills your prophecy or busts and makes you (figuratively) shut up about it?

I think 2 things can exist:
1. Barkley looks to have HOF potential & I cant aaif to watch him play each week.
2. Darnold looks the part.
Sam Darnold was very impressive in his rookie debut...
...he was agile, mobile, threw with accuracy and authority, and he seemed very much in command.
Even his ill-advised pick six toss was impressive for how he escaped danger to get himself in position to throw that ball in the first place.
My only question is: Why are there BBIers who must view the Darnold/Barkley Draft as a zero sum game?
I personally believe the right strategic move was to draft Darnold.
But who gives a shit?
The Giants made their choice and -- if nothing else -- we should all enjoy the amazing running back we have in Saquon Barkley. He is going to make the unbelievable rather mundane.
He is that good... and he will win ball games for us!
And people are were concerned about the I told you so
Yeah, it's only one game, but he looks and acts the part. No one really believed that with Sanchez and definitely not Gino.
Darnold will certainly struggle in games this year, but you can see that he can be a real good NFL QB.
People poo pooing his performance and his potential already have their minds made up on him. The bottom line is - there is a Very good chance Giants passed on a Franchise QB.
RE: And people are were concerned about the I told you so
Confident, strong arm, doesn't panic, escapability, but the ability to find space and keep his eyes down field. You can stick your head in the sand or look at the box score and try to rationalize it in your head all you want, he had a really, really good game. 21 year old baby and he had complete control. Darnold is legit. Not saying a word about Barkley or who we should have drafted or anythign else, just stating what everyone who actually watched, saw.
last night was the pick six. He instantly had adversity, and on the road.
From their he showed some real moxy and made plays. It was a very auspicious start. Obviously the next step is parlaying this into consistency.
On the other hand, he was very fortunate that his team scored a special teams TD and a defensive TD. And the D created another three turnovers. A lot went right...

Yep, and a lot went wrong...for Detroit. He's not going to have it that easy most weeks. Detroit looked lost and terrible. He's going to hit a rough patch at some point, but there is no denying that this kid has what it takes.

Legit to me means he was worth the 3rd overall pick. I don't think that has been proven yet, at least to me. Now legit may mean something different to you and that is fine of course.

Legit to me that Darnold was worth the 3rd overall pick was based on his college performance and the general consensus of scouting reports. His first game against Detroit did nothing to change that consensus; if anything, it just solidified it another notch.

I understand where you are coming from and I understand a lot can happen and will happen with Darnold. We have to let his career unfold, but my comment is that he belongs. As of right now, he's proven that he was worth the #3 pick. He's shown that he has everything you want in a young QB.
Think about how many QB's have a good game or two, or 6, then drop off. Hell Josh Freeman had a decent year. Just because he threw for 198 yds against a horrible Lions team doesn't tell everything. Lets see in a few years if he's another USC Sanchez or another Eli.
And by the way, Barkley just rushed for 108 yds and a TD against the best defense in football.
Darnold is good. Barkley is good. Both players are very good and have 1 NFL game under their belts.
I wanted Barkley but would not have been upset with Darnold. I am and Eli Manning apologist. I wanted Eli to be our QB for the rest of his career and I am willing to take whatever comes our way in terms of wins and losses because of it. I believe the whole NY Giants organization feels the same way or they wouldn't have drafted Barkley.
For the record, I was very happy with our 2018 draft: Barkley, Hernandez, Carter and Lauletta were all guys I was hoping the Giants would draft and they did.
I am on record. Have a good day.
People are acting like we are talking about a 10 year vet or
This was Darnold's first regular season game of his CAREER. For that, it was a VERY impressive outing no matter which way you slice it. People said that pre-season games don't count. Fine. Now, the regular season games don't count, too?
Uh huh.
It was a very good first outing. This will be talked about for years. But there's nothing wrong with pointing out this was a very good first outing for a 21 year old rookie on the road in primetime.

Congratulations - this is a big step. Admitting you have a problem. It's the first step to recovery. More of your ilk - and believe me a lot of them are here in this thread - should take notice of your courage and follow in your path.
You should be an inspiration for all the Eli addicts! :)

If I had a nickle for every move, draft pick we didn't take, unsigned free agent, or cut that was going to "come back and haunt us" over the years, I wouldn't need winning lottery numbers.
In regards to quarterback only? Josh Freeman, RG3, Dak Prescott, all guys that were going to be hall of famers and murder us after one season. Even Andrew Luck to an extent, the sure fire first ballot HOF'er before he ever played a snap. The list is long.

FWIW, a lot of the people here who are Eli supporters wanted to draft Darnold over Barkley so your fucking snide comment has no merit like usual.
and ability to create plays on the run was much better than I thought. He managed to create quite a few plays last night after the play broke down. I think we're going to see more and more of that in QB play in the future. Not that you have to be Michael Vick, but certainly the ability to extend the play, which this kid apparently has.
To me, how well Darnold or Barkley plays in no indictment on the Giants. Picking a QB is a crapshoot, no one knows. Barkley was universally considered the best player in the draft. The issue is Eli, we said a statistical outlier game was evidence the Eli still has "it". Eli needs to be more than a game manager for neglecting to draft a QB last year to be acceptable.I was encouraged by what I saw from Eli yesterday. However, I need to see him make a game winning throw, one we can point to and say..."Yeah, that throw was money, Eli doesn't make that throw we lose that game" That was winnable game on Sunday.
The Jaguars were number 2 in the NFL for opposing QB rating of 72.7 in 2017, their D looks to be better this year. This is why I was encouraged. Encouraged does not equal sold. The game against Dallas is going to tell us much. We need to win this game, Eli needs to deliver.

Agree, as does EE, the O line, and the coaches to someway get Barkley the ball in a little space

bw,
I have been a Giants fan for 42 years. I have seen some bad teams, including last years team. This years team will be much better and I believe Eli has good football left in him. He does need a supporting cast, like a decent O line. The line needs to play much better if NYG is going to compete. Eli made some very nice throws on Sunday. He missed on a couple and was hurried on quite a few including the batted ball/ INT and the one where OBJ was open in the endzone down on the goalline.
I will agree that Eli will bear much of the blame for losses but I will say that our O line, like last year, was the main reason we lost that game.
I agree - the line absolutely was the main reason for the loss. That's part of what makes going forward with Eli a vexing decision.
Behind a good offensive line Eli can absolutely play at a high level. But this line isn't good. The math doesn't compute - it hasn't computed all offseason.

Oddly, I don't think Eli needs to be great to be the Cowboys. Just steady. Dallas has a legit D for sure, but they will concede yardage and aren't great at corner. So take what they give us, score a TD, add a FG or two and take the W.
And I have little doubt the pedestrian Dallas O - and that's being generous - will struggle to even get FG attempts in this game. They are putrid on that side of the ball...
everyone hates all the quarterbacks because every weakness - real or perceived - has been dissected every day for several months. Darnold was not your run-of-the-mill hyped QB prospect. Had he entered the draft a year earlier, he would've been the #1 pick. Had he stayed at USC one more year, he would've been the #1 pick next year. He easily could have - and perhaps should have - been the #1 pick this year. He's going to be an excellent NFL quarterback.
Eli Manning: 37 years old, $45M cap hit over the next 2 years
Sam Darnold: 21 years old, $30M cap hit over the next 4 years
Objectively, the Jets have a better QB situation than the Giants do - not next year or the year after, but right at this moment.
And Eli did not play well Sunday. He left points on the board and we lost. Our standards have really dropped after 5 years of dogshit football.
I think 'didn't play well' is overstating it a bit.
It's really more like 'didn't play like a 20m QB'. He played OK, missed a few throws he should have hit, made a few nice plays. IMO, where he struggled was with placement, it seems like if a few of his throws had been better thrown there would have been bigger gains, in addition to a few completions.
That would be nitpicking with most QBs in the league, but Eli's paid better than most QBs. The same spotlight is thrown onto Stafford, Ryan and other QBs who play OK but don't merit their paycheck on a regular basis.
...but I am having a hard time accepting that the Jets may have found their answer. Dave In Hoboken - for some reason I thought it was you but it might have been another "Dave" who used to joke with me about my wife's family. They live in this Jet bubble that quite frankly shouldn't annoy me but man does it irk me when they are successful. A 43 year old man should not live with such distaste. I wish I can be happy for these guys but the Fireman Ed crap and just my environment in general. Ugh! with a capital "U".
Anyway, let's see what the season brings because if this is an indicator of things to come, I can't relive 2009-10 with these clowns.
But on a more Giant related topic - I thought the Hernandez pick supplemented the Barkley pick after my initial "we made a mistake" reaction. I have an 11 year old son who loves Eli Manning and the Giants so I do enjoy his innocence when rooting for Eli, Odell and his favorite players but I still get nervous with Eli under center.
I also think the stakes seem higher for the Giants. You have the Jets with Darnold with low expectations as far as record goes and is playing loose (I do agree with Dave in Hoboken that he was impressive as a rookie starting in prime time on the road). The Giants have a window that is small with Eli. However, they have Odell and Sequon long term so maybe the thinking with Dave Gettlemen and Shurmur is if this doesn't work out, the next QB has some potential great weapons. (Sheppard, Engram not bad as well). Continue building the o-line and we will see. If the Giants operated as the only team in the city, I would be patient but that other team is irritating.
I might be nitpicking, and I love Eli, but I'm just tired of rationalizing for this team.
We had a rare, but realistic, opportunity to completely blow up the roster and start a new project. It's what I would have done, but the front office opted not to. That's fine, but if I'm going to accept it I want to win now. No more excuses, no more rationalizations.
If we're going to go 8-8 with this team, we could just as easily have accomplished something similar with a younger team better situation for the long term. The route the front office chose - 8-8 isn't good enough.

I wanted a QB for this reason at the time but I just think that the constant "told you so's" are too early both for Darnold and Barkley and for the Giants QB situation in general. Maybe they wind up with one of the top QB's in this year's draft or the following and that player turns out to be better than Darnold. It's certainly plausible but we'll have to wait and see.

Sticky this.
I second this. Post of the Year.
RE: Even the majority of the board that actually wanted Darnold...
This post was started by someone intending to make fun of Darnold for poor play. When that backfired we get the whining about why are we talking about Darnold everyones tired of it.
This is the youngest starting QB in the NFL of the 50+ year Super Bowl era.
He was on the road.
On Monday Night Football.
An initially raucous crowd (until he silenced them)
Vs a team that was 9-7 last season with a defense that delivered 5 sacks and 8 QB hits vs the Giants last year and has an excellent pass rusher in Ziggy Ansha (Lions actually had 2 early sacks- 1 by Ansah)
He is on an untalented offense and a team that went 4-12 last season
He opens with a pick 6 (on a designed play, not his decision) and a crazy crowd
Then he delivers that performance.
It was incredibly impressive.
He made plays with his feet, his arm, his head. He looked like a veteran QB. He was composed, unrattled and in command.
His team just didnt make plays for him, he led that comeback. The turnovers, the special teams etc started happening in the 3rd after Darnold delivered 11 of 14 and 2 TD drives including his 40+ yard bomb. Those big plays by others made it a rout and piled on.
This is after Darnold walked into the preseason and played so well and beat out a very good Teddy Bridgewater, that the league had a lot of interest in and McCown to earn that starting job. They traded Bridgewater out of their confidence in Darnold and all that he did in preseason and not just the games.
To compare: Eli Mannings 1st start was at the age of 23, in week 11, so had weeks to learn, on a 5-4 team with Tiki Barber, Amani Toomer & Jeremy Shockey. He was at home. He was vs Atlanta.
He was 17 of 37 for 162 yards and 1 TD and 2 INT in a 14-10 loss.
Roethlisbergers 1st start was a 12 for 20 176 yard 2 TD 2 INT in a 30-13 loss to the Ravens.
Peyton was a 21 of 37 for 302 yards with a TD and 3 INT game in a 25-15 loss to Miami at home.
Rodgers was in his 3rd year iat 24 n week 13 of 10-2 team and he was 18 of 26 for 201 yards and a TD and took 3 sacks in a 37-27 loss to Dallas.
Darnold was impressive, but man there's a ton of shit in that rambling post about the Lions being good because of their record last year and the Jets being untalented.
The Jets have Robbie Anderson who has a very high ceiling. They also have Crowell and Powell at RB who make up one oft he better tandems in the league. They aren't a star-studded team, but they aren't untalented either.
On the flip side, many analysts speculated that the Lions would struggle this year. 10 out of the top 12 season predictions had them last in the division this year. They are weak in the secondary and outside of Ansah, they struggle to rush the passer.
Using the way they played against the Giants last year means dick. Heck, you are basically using last year to say that the Lions will be good and the Jets bad.

You have to be a bit fairer here, and I desperately wanted a QB with the #2 pick, because the Jets just played an outstanding team game for a team W. When you get a defensive pick six and a special teams TD, your team wins well over 90% of the games. Those are immense game breakers...
The key to the game was this - after the pick six, the Jets held the Lions to a 3 and out. That led to the 55 yard punt return by Martin. Darnold made a key third and six, which led to a first and goal 6 yard TD run by Crowell. That was an adrenaline shot for the entire team. And from there they just played faster, quicker, and more urgently than the Lions...
I might be nitpicking, and I love Eli, but I'm just tired of rationalizing for this team.

Yes, agree here. I would say, we need to see a team that can contend, for the playoffs, for the division and yes the ring. I have seen Superbowl or bust from Eli homers, but thats the type of black/white nonsense you have to filter out. If the Giants are passing up the QB at #2 it shouldn't be to be mediocre, it should be to contend for the playoffs.
I called that one during the game. He won't last two seasons there.
Patricia may not be long for that team, but the players there have got a lot of balls bitching about culture coming off three years where they haven't won 10 games, and considering none of them has even won a playoff game there.
The culture there is a losing one. Patricia should be trying to change it.
Darnold had already looked excellent long before those plays ever occurred.
Eh... when the Jets were up 41-17, their offense had crossed midfield on a scoring drive a grand total of ONE time. Darnold played a solid game, but all facets of the Lions played abominably.
Darnold had already looked excellent long before those plays ever occurred.
It was still a team win. The Jets returned a punt over 40 yards which set up their first TD (rushing one), then Stafford proceeded to throw ints on their next two possessions. The Jets punted on their next one and then the 40 td put them up 17-7. That ball was underthrown and should've been intercepted. I'm not sure how anyone could dispute that.
The first drive in the second half was the best one imo. After that Stafford threw a pick 6, went 3 and out and the Jets returned the punt for a TD so it's safe to say the game was over at that point.
Darnold played well and was poised and in control especially for a rookie qb making his first ever start but reading this thread you'd think he threw for 400+ yards like Cam Newton did in his debut. He had some very good moments and also some not so good ones. He got away with one on the long TD pass and one or two other times where he threw behind guys (there was a dropped int in the first half as well if i remember correctly). If that ball was picked the narrative completely changes despite the final score. Here it is:
He also got a lot of help in the form of a running game that before the Crowell TD was averaging nearly 6 ypc and he had 3.26 seconds to throw the ball which was good for 2nd amongst starting qbs in week 1. It was a dominant performance from the Jets and the Lions looked like they didn't want to be there.
That was actually a really good play by darnold. He looked off the safety and pumped the ball short to ensure single coverage and gave his guy a chance to make a play. The throw wasnt perfect, but it didnt need to be. That was a vet-esque play. He also slid to the left to avoid pressure.

I know what you're referring to and the safety had no shot at catching up to Anderson at that point. The throw didn't need to be perfect because the defender couldn't track the ball and turned his head too late. I mean it literally went through his hands.
I don't know what pressure you're referring to. They were rushing 3, none of which got any push at all for the 6 seconds he had to throw and while he did a nice job other times of avoiding pressure, he didn't there (and didn't need to). And for what it's worth, that was the only tight window throw he made all game and it should've at the very least been an easy pbu.
We will see in the coming weeks though. Unless the Jets line suddenly turned into a healthy Dallas, he'll have to make those tight window throws against Jax, Denver, Minny and Chicago.
you have propped them up as being a "near playoff" team last year and referred to their record last year as indication that Darnold was playing a pretty tough team.
Like I said above, Darnold was impressive, but using Detroit's 2017 season as an indication isn't doing any favors to anyone.

Like I said, a rookie QBs first ever game at 21 on tbe road in the home opener on prime time as an underdog vs a team that was good last year
Thats what he was up against. Its damn impressive to play the wAy he did
I don't
Funniest moment of the week!
as sokn as he released it i said what is he doing?
Seriously, as a Darnold guy in April, nobody expected him to be lights out in year one. I still think hes going to be fine.
Barclay definitely not worth 2nd pick for this
/s
Sam is going to take his lumps, I'm sure he will be ok for the Jets. Only time will tell if he's a franchise guy.

However, this team of broadcasters wont be the regular MNF crew for the rest of the season. That honor belongs to Joe Tessitore, Jason Witten and Lisa Salters, who will call the second half of the doubleheader: Raiders vs. Rams.

ESPN is a joke. Thank God the Giants arent being subject to this nonsense. Sounds like someone transitioning.

But, the first play was fun in a Jetsy sort of way.
As a Mets fan, I can empathize.

Who the hell is Joe Tessitore?
Don't think it's a catch though.
Wow. Missing Gruden for real.
No running back in the world can change your franchise like a QB can. I dont believe in just blindly supporting your team. I am a Giants fan but I dont agree with every decision they make, I have a different view of how you should build a team and spend a high draft pick.

Really horrible announcing voices. Sounds amateurish.
Except I don't think it's gonna be evenly applied. The NFL just does a bad job with trying to make this rule understandable by any objective measure.
I think he's the goods fellas..

Yikes...

Quarterbacking in the NFL is about consistency.Plenty of guys look like all-pro's on 1 play.
Same can be said for the crowd judging him off of the pick 6.
Did the same.
Like it better already.
They look so bad.
He's done a ton of work with College Basketball and NCAA football, as well as horseracing. If you look at his bio, it's actually very impressive.

Davis Webb looked competent against their 1s without Beckham and Barkley.

And half the posters here
Uh huh.
Hopefully that's a point of emphasis when searching for Eli's successor. A mobile QB would allow for some "playground ball" with Odell and Saquon, and it would be lethal.

Mobility matters. You don't have to be Lamar Jackson, but the ability to move to create throwing lanes and extend plays is a bigger factor than I can ever recall. It's in this area that I think Darnold can really play.

Agreed. It's why, if I were running the Giants' draft, one of the approaches I would have considered would have been to draft Barkley and then trade up for Lamar Jackson.
Its clear they dont care about their product. They only care about appearances.
Its clear they dont care about their product. They only care about appearances.
No they won't hire Kaepernick because they don't want to piss of the NFL again. They will hire a former big name player that doesn't deserve the job instead.

Recommend ESPN 2 for spanish feed
The thing is I'm sure there are women that can do the job. Just not this one.
Its clear they dont care about their product. They only care about appearances.
The Raiders/Rams crew is their regular MNF crew. Haven't heard them during preseason. Are they bad?
Ive heard her do college football on ESPN, shes not terrible in my view. I think the crew who did the Giant game yesterday was worse than this one. Much worse

You're getting carried away. 20 to begin the year; 21 now.
Same for Rosen, who's just a few months older.
Yea and watching hes expressions on the sideline is already annoying
But he has a pencil in his ear! He's a rocket scientist! Blah blah blah. He'll go the way of all other Belichick gophers. They put up a graphic of Little Bill's coaching tree and it left a lot to be desired.
I say it every week 1 Monday Night double header: if ESPN had any balls they'd bring back the three Mikes: Ditka, Golic, and Greenberg. Quite possibly the most unintentional hilarity I've ever experienced, and that game thread was incredible.
Sheesh.
I think thats fair to say. Webb carved them up without Barkley or Beckham

He's a 21 year old who shouldn't even be starting yet, and is playing in the first game of his career, on the road, in primetime, with no real weapons.
Considering some said he doesn't even belong in the league, I think he's handling himself quite well, win or lose tonight.

Oh yeah. Great group right there.
A little underthrown but good for darnold
Just blown coverage on someone on that one -- whether it was the CB who let him go or the safety who took forever to get started to help.
Exciting for the Darnold kid...
It was a good throw but up until then he was dinking and dunking. All u guys would rather be right than the giants be right. I wanted a QB too but Im not gonna root for the guy just to spite the giants its dumb.
Haha
The jets OL was holding every Lion on that play, lol. Tons of time indeed.
And a touchdown pass for the rookie!
Almost as good as Barkley's run...

Its obvious that some of u guys rather be able to say I told u so

Hi LawrenceTaylor56.
Good pass rush really screws everything up in the red zone. Good Jets defense there.
Is that a sin?
Believe it or not, teams are allowed to have good OLines. Just because we haven't had one in 7 years, doesn't mean that other teams can't have one.
Ball went right through the defenders hands. Looked like a much better throw than it was in real time.
Well David Shaw for one is offended by your statement.
Calm down guy with amazing posting history. Its obvious that some guys(posters on this board) want to be right about Darnold so they can say I told u so and the giants are dumb. Idk why youre taking my comments personally.
Someseem to be really trying to spin his performance tonight in a negative light, why is that?

And again, that is allowed. Not every team has an Ereck Flowers. And not every team would keep him for years on end, especially as a starter.
I don't remember last time I saw Eli have all day to throw.
Seriously you know wen the announcer says he has all day to throw, wen have you heard it on a Giants broadcast wen Giants are on offense....

Wait, I'm defensive? Why is it being pointed out that the OLine is playing well? Who said they weren't?
Why is that poster even bringing Eli into this thread? It's a Jets/Lions game. What the hell does that have to do with Eli or the Giants?
Lol
... Im not gonna root for the guy just to spite the giants...
How does rooting for Darnold spite the Giants? That requires magical thinking that somehow "rooting" actually impacts what happens in reality. I just don't get that type of magical thinking that is so prevalent on BBI.

Making fun of handles is always the wrong way to respond to a point you disagree with. But then again youre probably one of those guys who loved taking a RB over a QB and said something like cant wait to get back to smash mouth football.
Lol
Again, what does this game have to do with Eli Manning?
And I'm the defensive one? Seems like there's some insecurity in here tonight for some reason.
Well, when others are mad that some posters have the nerve to compliment another player for playing well, yes?
Sorry, but, "LOL, if Eli had this same protection he'd be good too!11" just screams of insecurity.
Why bring Eli up?
It's been ONE half. People want to make him Brady already.

Well said.
Not understanding this very obvious observation about time in the pocket and then complaining that you cant over praise the Jets QB in peace, screams of insecurity.
Exactly. "Very obvious observation." So, what's the point of posting it? No one said the Jets OLine has been trash tonight.
You just seem really mad.
Just waiting for that post..

Why are you instigating? Just let it go.

I agree. People act like this was the last year for 10 years to draft a QB
The 2018 QB class was touted as one of the best in recent years.

He can move and throw with accuracy. Love Eli. Love Barkley but passing on Darnold may have been a mistake.
So you trade up if you have a conviction if one of these guys is a franchise QB. Jets did this March.
This is an asinine post.
We have a QB, not a young QB but a guy who can still play and has two super bowls on his resume.
I think the pick 6 is forgotten at this point.
I meant for Darnold of course...

But Giants are in the position they were in Ike once in a decade. And when it comes to QBs even the difference between picking 2nd and 5th can be huge.

Because I love Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields but they won't be able until 2021.
Many Lions fans were convinced the team made a mistake with Patricia based on their PRESEASON performance. This aint helping him...not a bit. Could get very ugly in Motown this year.

I will always be convinced that the Giants tried to look for any flaw in the quarterbacks to justify keeping Eli, thus hampering their evaluation from the start.

Um, 1. We may not be picking that high and hopefully ont 2. A guy may not be there or the team may not be willing to trade and 3. Trades are costly.
Yes trades can be costly but as we have seen from Eli, Wentz, Goff, Watson, Mahomes, etc it is worth it.

You dont pick a RB in the first round. They dont win games for you single handed. QBs do. You can keep all those occasional 70 yard runs. Means little in most games.
So gotten to.
The stupid TV networks shouldn't be showing that flaming asshole.
I've been drooling about him and Lawrence since last year (senior year of HS). I've heard evaluators say that Lawrence could sling it in the NFL RIGHT NOW. That's unheard of.
Those two are the best QB prospects we've seen in a long time. Possibly since Andrew Luck.
But if you were rationalizing the pick by believing none of the quarterbacks were worth the second pick, I thought you were wrong then and stated so several times.
Still think you were wrong.
What a disaster for the Lions.
He does, but from a personal standpoint I don't like taking southpaws. Not that there's anything wrong with them, but I swear, each ball thrown by a lefty looks so weakly thrown. It would scare the hell out of me every time. Haha

you have to generational talents to help eli and in place for when you do transition to a new qb

I'm in the second category. I wasn't convinced with any of the guys and I thought Baker Mayfield was the best of the bunch. I still think Baker will have the best career of all the QBs.

The league has changed teams don't have to wait long for QB's to develop. Case in point Wentz, Watson, and Goff last season. Mahomes looks like he is breaking out this season.

It is likely the team would have been reconfigured differently.
Perhaps they don't make the specific o-line moves they made. So I can't look at it all in that vacuum of "stick him with this o-line."
But everyone with the Giants wanted immediacy and didn't want to play the long game.
We will see what will win out.
Giants nation crashing based on Darnold yet?

my opinion they felt barkley was to good to pass up
The Giants obviously felt the same way.

Also remember how Mark Sanchez was the king of NY after back to back AFC championship game appearances in his first two years.

I think he will be another in a long line of shitty headcoaches from the BB tree. He seems in over his head.

Is it fair to wonder if former Pats assistants arent nearly as impressive when they no longer have access to whatever information the Pats are continuously cheating to access?
Against this Lions D...any QB would look good.
Last time the Giants scored more than 48 points in a game, they lost.

But it was obvious when it was happening that both Prescott and Sanchez were bus drivers. Neither one showed out as a gifted passer, because they aren't. Dak had the best offensive line in football and a top 2 RB. Sanchez had a great defense and an offense built around rushing.
Yeah, I noticed that too on a timeout. With that utility belt on, he really looks huge....definitely put on some weight.
He's....rotund

In other news, Stafford looks different body wise. Did he drop some poundage???
That was the same guy who declared NYC a Jets town in 2011

Chubb
Still not a qb because none in "their" opinion a "franchise qb"
Secondly the are people who have enough power in the Giants organization to choose a RB over this QB. How is that even possible in 2018? If Darnold stays healthy they are going to regret it for a very long time.
Just another chapter in the Mara's picking players legend. Craig Morton for Randy White has been the Mara fuck up gold standard for over 40 years. It may have competition on it's 50th anniversary. Time will tell.

Typical week one over reaction.

Wait.... For a 450 post thread, admittedly I didn't watch the game, all of this is over a 16 completion, 200 yard passing performance? That started with a pick 6?
Were those the final numbers?
The Jets faced the Atlanta Falcons on Monday Night Football in Week 5; Smith completed 16 of his 20 passes for 199 yards and three touchdowns.[72] He completed all four of his passes on the Jets' final drive
The way he recovered after that pick 6 was very Eli like. His demeanor was very impressive. How he handled the pocket was very impressive.
He looks the part.

2. Darnold looks the part.
...he was agile, mobile, threw with accuracy and authority, and he seemed very much in command.
Yep
Btw, JStweart is averaging 4ypc. I told you he wasn't finished! 😄
Right?
Many of us preferred Darnold, others Rosen, etc...
Giants pick was hardly a shocker and clearly not a knee jerk decision. Odds are, Barkley has a higher HOF likelihood than other players picked.
It's done. If you're a Giant fan, not worth bitching over. We knew the warts on each QB.
Adding to a negative atmosphere helps the Giants, how?
Darnold will certainly struggle in games this year, but you can see that he can be a real good NFL QB.
People poo pooing his performance and his potential already have their minds made up on him. The bottom line is - there is a Very good chance Giants passed on a Franchise QB.
Is that to me? Eli had a pretty damned good game yesterday. You seen an I told you so from me?
Barkley had a franchise record debut. Heard I told you so from me?
No. I'm just watching and letting it all play out. I'm encouraged. That's it.
And now he is causing a RB controversy over who should start...
The tape will now begin growing on Sammy so lets see if he has a strong learning curve...

Hmm "pretty damn good game" no tds and pick 6 to end game....wouldnt say a damn good game ..mediocre more like.
Sounds like the entire Jets team had a pretty good game, too. Five INT's is a lot. 3 Defensive and Special Teams TD's. 170 rushing yards.
A bit defensive this am?? It wasnt you but not hard to find the defenders of the faithful. They show up every day...

Of course, Jax is a very talented team and the Lions are trash, so there's not much to get from that first outing.

Cool the jets.

FWIW, a lot of the people here who are Eli supporters wanted to draft Darnold over Barkley so your fucking snide comment has no merit like usual.
Agree, as does EE, the O line, and the coaches to someway get Barkley the ball in a little space
Jet's or Giants

bw,
I have been a Giants fan for 42 years.
Quite a few folks here said he'll be out of the league in a few years.

I'm not talking about this thread. I'm talking about posts from some leading into the draft this past offseason.
Eli Manning: 37 years old, $45M cap hit over the next 2 years
Sam Darnold: 21 years old, $30M cap hit over the next 4 years

I think 'didn't play well' is overstating it a bit.
It's really more like 'didn't play like a 20m QB'. He played OK, missed a few throws he should have hit, made a few nice plays. IMO, where he struggled was with placement, it seems like if a few of his throws had been better thrown there would have been bigger gains, in addition to a few completions.
That would be nitpicking with most QBs in the league, but Eli's paid better than most QBs. The same spotlight is thrown onto Stafford, Ryan and other QBs who play OK but don't merit their paycheck on a regular basis.

Sticky this.

Sticky this.
I second this. Post of the Year.
This post was started by someone intending to make fun of Darnold for poor play. When that backfired we get the whining about why are we talking about Darnold everyones tired of it.
This is not easy for any QB in their first game.
What Darnold did was extraordinarily impressive.

Great post.
You read this thread and people are acting like Darnold had world beaters going in and everyone knows the Lions are worst team ever
That wasnt the case.
In fact a few weeks ago BBI was pretty overjoyed at Davis Webbs performance against this near playoff team last year.
I was even called out on pointing out how Ogletree got toasted on coverage but dont worry because Riddick is so awesome.
The point is- going in- this was a tough spot for a 1st ever game

Darnold had already looked excellent long before those plays ever occurred.

Now people acting like they are the 0-16 Browns
Like I said above, Darnold was impressive, but using Detroit's 2017 season as an indication isn't doing any favors to anyone.

Like I said, a rookie QBs first ever game at 21 on tbe road in the home opener on prime time as an underdog vs a team that was good last year
Thats what he was up against. Its damn impressive to play the wAy he did
