Erik Flowers and Lack of Preparation

Anando : 9/11/2018 1:53 pm
I know there have been a million comments/thoughts on Flowers and his performance this past Sunday, but Geoff Schwartz's recent tweet/gif really struck me:

Quote:

Geoff Schwartz

@geoffschwartz

“Next time I know what type of player I’m against, he’s not really a speed guy, so next time I won’t jump out so fast." Not knowing that Calais Campbell is a “not really a speed guy” is peak IDGAF

Apparently that is a real quote from Flowers? Basically indicates this dude saw no film, did no prep, and thought he could simply show up the day of and physically outmatch Campbell...

After we drafted him the immediate criticism was that his footwork was off, but something that could be "coached up."

This simply may be a case of a lack of drive and motivation. I'd hope Giants staff/veteran offensive lineman can create a more rigid preparation structure for him, but at this point maybe it's too late?

This is the GIF (click play when it opens) that Schwartz was referencing:

How do you not know that? It's your freaking job. That's why you go to meetings, watch tape, & practice. It's basically admitting you didn't prepare at all.
How many more games does this clown start?

Yes, true. But what can the team be doing week to week to at least ensure that he's prepared about who he's facing? This seems basic...

Tripping
Adirondack GMen : 9/11/2018 2:13 pm : link
That film clip brought back my years of watching PeeWee football. If a player got past a linemen they would stick out their foot or do just Flowers did. We pay him a NFL salary to use things that would have gotten him spoke to in PeeWee or PopWarner football. Give me a freakin break. How can the front office and management accept the comment “ next time I’ll know who I’m facing and if he is a speed rusher” that popped my brain when I read that.
Come on coaches I’m sure you can find a parking lot attendant to do just as well as him...
Its entirely possible
ron mexico : 9/11/2018 2:15 pm : link
that he did the appropriate amount of film work and was just grasping at straws for excuses for a bad play.

From what I have gathered, his preparation is not the issue. Its just when the bullets are flying it all goes out the window.

When I read that in his transcript,
Diver_Down : 9/11/2018 2:21 pm : link
it spoke volumes as to how serious he takes his profession. Here is a guy that failed at his prior position forcing a new GM to find the best available replacement. He is now playing a new position with no certain future. You would think that would be all the motivation he needs to prepare and play to the best of his ability. If he is able to put enough tape together demonstrating competency, then he'll have an opportunity to continue in this profession. He literally is faced with millions in motivation at stake.

While each week during the season entails new opponents to prepare for, the first game of the season he had weeks to prepare and scout the opponents. With Fowler being suspended, his field of opponents is narrowed to Calais and Yannick. Now, granted both of them are far greater players than Flowers could ever dream of being, but still he has weeks to prepare and study his 2 main opponents. Instead, he apparently prepared by binge watching Karate Kid to master his best roundhouse kick.
Schwartz obvisously hates Flowers
bluepepper : 9/11/2018 2:22 pm : link
it's personal. Not sure why but basically it's to the point where you need to discount anything he says on the guy. Bad look for someone who obviously is looking for an analyst gig. And just because a player looks bad doesn't mean he's lazy or stupid. He might just not be good enough.

I'd agree if the problem was just a lack of talent.

But DG and PS have been pretty consistent in describing the type of player they want. That quote shows Flowers does not meet that standard.

Sometimes you have to take a hit that sends a message in order to move the bigger picture forward.

Bench EF and tell him he had better show more dedication in practice or Wheeler or a new vet will play ahead of him for the rest of his contract. (Try to hook up with another team in 2019 with THAT on your record.)

I get it with his play and all and the huge lapses of competency, but he is a human being. These guys aren't commodities where basic human dignity doesn't apply.

A bag of stinking hot garbage?

Yes, it's a bad quote, and is revealing of a lack of prep. But players shouldn't be referred to this way

His fundamentals go out the window and he reverts back to poor technique. He got beat badly and so he reacted and did something to slow the progress of the defender. What did you want him to do? Give the guy a free shot at Eli!?

my problem
cjac : 9/11/2018 2:33 pm : link
with they interception play, is that when that player faked the blitz inside, thats not his assignment. that player was responsible for covering Barkley, because they were in man coverage. if that player comes on a blitz, and Flowers blocks his man, Eli will dump the ball to barkley who would have been uncovered. He's in his 4th year, he should know to just take care of his assignment.

ron mexico : 9/11/2018 2:35 pm : link

“His work ethic, the way he goes about his business, the way that he has put it behind him, he’s just doing his thing,” Solder said during Giants minicamp. “He’s trying hard and he cares, and he’s asking questions. He is doing everything that you would want a guy to do.”

Like I said above, I don't think his work ethic is his problem. Although his checking out for week 17 last year gives me some pause there.

But, how is pointing out what someone said being out to get the guy? I mean if he said that is what he felt Flowers did then that would be one thing. But, these are Flowers own words. Sorry but this guy sucks about as bad as I have seen a 1st RD olinemen suck. He negates his one big strength, size by just being so fucking off balance and out position. Being slow is one thing, being out of position and being out muscled because you just refuse to use proper technique (or just can't grasp what that technique would be) is something else entirely.

His own quote states in summary that he was expecting Calais to be a speed guy. He jumped too far out expecting the speed and had to compensate with the trip.

Now, Calais has been in the league for years so if he had prepared and scouted his opponent, then he would have known that Calais is not known as a speed rusher.

Maybe according to your information. Maybe what he coaches see on tape in 2018 is different. Maybe Flowers mid spoke. Who knows.

Under the new regime I’d expect a player that’s lazy and doesn’t prepare to not play at all regardless of he lack of depth. Maybe I’m being naive but the precedence they with all the cuts tells me otherwise.

I think this is 100% right. The rumblings were of the dreaded "uncoachable" label around the draft and he's lived up to it. He can't function when the lights are on. That's why you see nothing resembling professional offensive line technique in pass-rush situations, especially against quality competition. He has absolutely zero confidence in his technique, and after four years in this business, it ain't gonna change.

As for his quote, I get the impression the guy is dumber than rocks. He can barely speak at the level of a 5th grader. I don't say that to knock him personally... I just don't think he has the aptitude to process coaching, apply technique and learn his craft.

He will be gone. Just another failed draft pick. It makes Gettlemans job easier all he has is Collins to sign who can be franchised. They do have to free up cap space for next season after obj signing. I would assume some of OBJ contract will be bonused out to free up cap space.
