In hindsight it might have been worth paying Pugh

WinterIsComing : 9/11/2018 5:21 pm
Ultimately I think Gettleman made the right call, but looking back on it probably would have been worth signing Pugh at RT to a long term deal while we looked for his replacement.

A former first round pick who can play multiple positions on the line will always have value on the trade market. It would have allowed us to release Flowers and have at least a serviceable starting RT.

and Flowers.

Cut Flowers was the move.

Not trade and pay for Ogletree.

Then pay Pugh.

I am having trouble understanding this.
Ogletree was a bad move
KWALL2 : 9/11/2018 7:17 pm : link
keeping Flowers? Also a bad move

Should have used the money (and that draft pick) on something better. Pugh is better for the team then those 2 and more.

Pugh was a very inconsistent player. And he had trouble staying on the field. He is not missed.
Ogletree..
FatMan in Charlotte : 9/11/2018 7:31 pm : link
will contribute more to this team than Pugh did last year (or that Pugh will contribute this year I bet).

Ogletree played pretty solidly on Sunday, but I guess people are still up in arms about coverage issues in the preseason.
I don't think the issue was paying Pugh
jcn56 : 9/11/2018 7:33 pm : link
it was paying Omameh what they did. His debut was disappointing, albeit against a tough opponent (that same caveat applies to the rest of the line, though).

Flowers salary is guaranteed
fkap : 9/11/2018 7:59 pm : link
there would have been no cap relief in cutting him. Trading his salary would have been a savings, but good luck getting someone to take him.

Would have been nice to have brought in someone, but was there anyone at a decent price?

Pugh and Richburg. Tell Flowers to hit the road. Don't sign Omameh. Play Halapio at guard. There ya go....
Pugh and Richburg..
FatMan in Charlotte : 9/11/2018 8:19 pm : link
would be expensive as hell and cutting Flowers saves nothing.

Then when Pugh and Richburg get injured, then what?? Keep Jones as a backup at $3M??

...funny I had the same thought while I was watching Ereck Flowers get abused this Sunday!

And though we have an F-ed up cap situation, it's clear the Giants are in a win-now mode so they could have manipulated salaries/bonuses to give Pugh a big pay day.

The only fly in the ointment is when Pugh sneezes and pulls a muscle that lands him on IR.

Oh, well... on to Dallas, and may the force be with Ereck Flowers.
No.....

When Pugh was healthy, he is better than Hernanadez, or did you miss watching him being pushed backwards yesterday?

Pugh just couldn't be counted on to stay on the field...
Pugh and Richburg can go suck a dick

Pugh and Richburgh were part of the problem
Larry in Pencilvania : 9/11/2018 10:27 pm : link
Always injured, always whining, and never doing a good job. Flowers is a sunk cost whether he was cut or stayed. They're going to ride Flowers till the end of the year and then he's gone. Omameh is a band aid till they can get the line fixed. And I believe that DG has a view of how he wants the line, unlike Reese.

Guys like Pugh are what the line doesn't need

He also gave up a TD in coverage that was called back by penalty, no?
Letting Pugh go and somehow getting a 3rd rounder for JPP
Dave in Hoboken : 9/11/2018 11:33 pm : link
were both great moves by DG. Pugh was decent/solid when he actually played. But you can't have a guy, let alone a solid starter on this below average OLine miss around 4-7-8 games per year. Too much.
'4-7-8' games
Dave in Hoboken : 9/11/2018 11:34 pm : link
was supposed to be '4-6-8' games. But, same thing. You get the idea.

Pugh helped the cardinals to a whopping 61 yds rushing, credited with giving up a sack, and while I take it with a grain of salt, scored lower than Hernandez by PFF. Pugh was unexceptional, always hurt, and may have had a toxic attitude. Zona can have him
Cutting Flowers is a win
KWALL2 : 9/12/2018 1:20 am : link
The only options with this guy is G. You can't hide him at RT. It doesn't work.

Ogletree makes more than Pugh.

I'll take Pugh (and the picks) over Ogletree all day.

Are you talking about seferian Jenkins td catch? Seemed like a great catch to me. Not sure I would be too hard on ogletree on that one, but maybe you're looking to be argumentative

Gordo : 9/12/2018 10:00 am : link
keep pugh, and flowers. Keep flowers as a swing tackle. Don't sign jstewart. Maybe don't trade JPP and cut him at the end of this year. Sign Solder, Draft Hernandez, Sign Omameh.
Pugh
Rong5611 : 9/12/2018 10:09 am : link
Bad attitude supposedly. Always hurt. They weren't going to go deep to keep him.
OP is too narrow in thinking
JonC : 9/12/2018 10:11 am : link
Pugh and Richburg (in a different manner than JPP, DRC, Hart) were determined to be part of the problem in the locker room.
No way you keep Pugh

it was not worth paying him -- he was part of the problem and not part of the solution

When you miss on so many draft picks in consecutive years this is the fastest way to improve (hopefully).
OG isn't the problem
Torrag : 9/12/2018 10:52 am : link
Hernandez is a rookie and played his first real action against arguable the best defense in the NFL, he'll continue to develop and be a very good player. Live with the growing pains, despite some(but not much) false optimism going into this season this was always going to be a two year rebuild.Omameh is an average starter as is Pugh except Omameh stays healthy. So paying Pugh is a bad idea and DG got it right.

So where is the problem? RT and OC.

In today's NFL teams seek matchups for their best pass rushers and move them around accodingly. I don't like MacAdon't but he;s right on Flowers. The man is stiff, can't bend and will always be a liability on the edge. He needs to move inside if he's able until he's replaced next season.

Halapio is just not very good. Can't anchor and doesn't switch well on stunts. So the Brett Jones deal was a terrible move and their assessment of that position battle was a major fail on the coaching staff. Let's hope Pulley gets up to speed quickly and replaces him because he's a backup in this league.
Would flowers

I've seen this said before but not sure where this is coming from. What leads you to think this?
Flowers..
FatMan in Charlotte : 9/12/2018 10:58 am : link
is probably going to be better at Guard, simply because it is hard to be worse than he is at Tackle.

But it is a moot point. You can't move him from Tackle until there is a viable replacement. This is his year to work it out or he's gone. Unfortunately, we didn't sign a swing Tackle that can come right in and play at a higher level, so we have to hope that flowers either levels out, or his shitty play doesn't derail the season.
Pugh..
FatMan in Charlotte : 9/12/2018 11:01 am : link
had a reputation in the locker room of being in it for himself and putting himself above the team.

There were a lot of whispers that he wasn't playing when dinged up to save himself for a next contract and he threw a lot of teammates under the bus internally.

Basically, the atmosphere reported was one where he and Richburg were in opposition to the other linemen.
If someone else had posted this ^
arniefez : 9/12/2018 11:04 am : link
the BBI police would have gone defcon 4. Who knows if a single word of that is true. But we know for a fact that Pugh is average and often injured and that the Giants needed some new faces. So I think it was a good call and the right call to let him leave. Richburg too for the same reasons.
LOL..

I'm pretty sure JonC and a few others know which words are true, and they've intimated it here for a couple of years.

Getting one to understand what they are trying to say seemingly is really fucking difficult.

is very good in not spelling out exactly what the situation is, and if you want to think he's wrong, that's fine, but it really shouldn't be that difficult to read between the lines unless you really don't care to.

arnie is probably just pissed it isn't something else he can kill ownership over....

christian : 9/12/2018 3:21 pm : link
You don't need to listen to any whispers -- the guy himself literally blamed an injury on the team for asking him to move positions.

Nothing ambiguous about the nonsense behind that.

Take that in for a moment -- in his head the team asking him to do what was best for the team caused an injury.
