you need to set the criteria for determining that. facebook/twitter followers? official polls if any exist? I'd find something that I can get definitive metrics with the assumption that it is not complete, but a good estimate
The Giants might have estimated this number at some point.
The NFL also may have some data that suggests (for example) 42% of all males and 12% of all females self-identify as football fans.
If you could get that data you could apply it to populations in specific geographic areas. But even that wouldn't get you what you need. In Connecticut for instance, how many of those people root for the Giants? The Pats? The Jets? And how many Giants fans have relocated (like me) to other parts of the country or the world? No idea how you would get that number.
I guess you could also try contacting all the sporting apparel companies. If you told them it was for a school project maybe they would give you a team-by-team sales breakdown by percentage, which you could then apply to geographic populations.
Any way you slice it it's going to be hard to come up with a concrete number because you're trying to quantify how many people in the world prefer something, when a significant number of those people have never stated that preference on a public platform, such as Facebook.
Thanks, I already checked that site. I’m looking for a total number of Giants fans to show the potential target audience for a retail product.
Many thanks
You can estimate it possibly by looking at viewership numbers of the NFL on average per week. Then take a look at how much revenue the Giants make as a percentage of all the teams and applying it to the viewership (there are other factors involved so not perfect obviously). Or maybe simpler if you can find average ratings for Giants games. Obviously, neither is exact but these things you can usually only get estimates.

I'm positive there was a big dropoff in the past 6 years.
Do a search for "market researchers". Then contact a number of them and ask how they would approach this project.
They're used to thinking through research projects, so their ideas and their approach might prove useful.
Good luck!
