Over the Cap: The NYG Comp Pick and Geno Smith

shyster : 9/12/2018 11:15 am
OTC article published today. NYG has gained a spot on their board for a 4th round pick. The ultimate fate of that pick may depend on whether, and how much, Geno Smith gets on the field.

So, one of the side interests to keep an eye on, as the season unfolds, is whether Rivers suffers an injury (nothing too serious, of course) or the Chargers are involved in a blow-out.

Go Geno - ( New Window )
I'll plead ignorance here

If Geno's salary is guaranteed now that he made the roster cuts to 53, why would the comp pick be on the bubble if he were to be released? Is there something in the comp pick formula about how long the FAs you lost have to be on a roster?

I gather from the article that snap counts are in the formula.

So it's not just making the roster or staying on the roster.
Would someone please post the paragraph from OTC on the Giants?

There's an ad right over it and I can't read it, nor can the ad be closed. Thanks.

The Giants got back on the board with a 4th rounder for Justin Pugh, but this happened only because Geno Smith barely made it back into qualifying range after cutdowns to 53. He’s still qualifying despite not logging any snaps, as backup quarterbacks tend to do. But he is still very much on the bubble, and unless Phillip Rivers, who has a lengthy starting streak, is unable to play, that 4th for Pugh will likely come back off the board.
Please Explain

The Giants get a 4th for losing Pugh but could lose the 4th if Gino doesn’t play? How does Solder factor in? Or the other free agents? Or the center who signed with SF?

will royally suck if keeping Michael Thomas over Andrew Adams or anyone else at this point as our backup safety will end up costing them a 4th round comp pick. If the Giants signed one less veteran (Latimer or Thomas) the 4th rounder would be a slam dunk and Geno Smiths playing time would be deciding whether we get an extra 7th or not along with the 4th as a comp pick.

It is an "all other things being equal" analysis. At the moment, Geno's playing time looms large.

If Giants were to release Michael Thomas, then, as mentioned, Geno wouldn't be as critical.

The likelihood that anything pertinent regarding Solder, Pugh, Richburg is going to change isn't great, to my understanding.
