JPP Injury

nygfaninorlando : 9/12/2018 1:08 pm
He payed 48 snaps in week 1 but didn’t get on the stat sheet. Now he has a brace on his knee and says his knee is “jacked up”. Loved the effort and the results JPP brought to the table his first few seasons before the hand injury, but trading him and his contract may be Gettlemen’s best move to date.

clearing 15 million off of next year's cap plus adding BJ Hill with that 3rd round pick was a win for the Giants.

and 2011 performance was epic, but boy did this guy never pan out. Blowing off a hand didn't help, but jettisoning him was a smart move.
JPP had a DPOY type season

and virtually carried the defense through the first 4 months of a SB winning season.

His career here was certainly not what it could have been. It included a tragic accident, a bunch of injuries and ultimately a bad contract, but he was better than he gets credit for. There is probably no 2011 Super Bowl without his efforts.
I thought
darren in pdx : 9/12/2018 1:52 pm : link
he was going to be a HOF-level talent after 2011..was very wrong. He flashed it every now and then, but I guess injuries and not being able to get by on pure athleticism after that season caught up real fast. Was a good player but never reached that level of play again and happy he helped delivered a Super Bowl.
To me
BlackLight : 9/12/2018 1:58 pm : link
He was a guy who was overly reliant on his physical gifts. It worked in college, and for his first couple years in the pros. But I don't this he ever bothered to truly learn how to play his position from a technical perspective.

There is definitely no 2011 Super Bowl without JPP on defense and Cruz on offense. Both delivered superhuman performances at precisely the right moments to get us into the tournament... then Eli took over.

JPP more than panned out and jettisoning him was the right move.

Don't rewrite history as if he was a bum.

He's 7th all time in team history in the Sack column, ahead of George Martin. What on earth are you talking about?
Put simply, a lot of unrealized potential
jcn56 : 9/12/2018 3:24 pm : link
He made some great plays, including the one that propelled us to a SB, but man the guy had potential to be one of the all time greats and for the most part either due to injury or lack of effort it slipped away.
Pierre-Paul has 1.5 less career sacks than justin tuck.
Ten Ton Hammer : 9/12/2018 3:26 pm : link
Both were extremely good run defenders and both were the best defensive players on championship-winning teams. How did one guy not pan out and the other is in the ring of honor?

You may be on to something ... Flowers is even worse ... no honing the craft nor any request for his opponent or himself (lack of studying)

Tuck has a much better personality. Although he went through a period of people calling him Eeyore
I'd say Tuck was more consistent

never was the player he was in 2011 again
Greg from LI : 9/12/2018 3:44 pm : link
He was an absolute monster that year. After that, he was a pretty good player. Not a bust by any definition, but the path his career took after 2011 was a bit disappointing.
Eagles took Brandon Graham 2 slots ahead of JPP

Based on the early returns i gave my Philly fan brother all kinds of shit. Pretty crazy how that ones turned around in recent seasons.
JPP's career arc ...
FStubbs : 9/12/2018 3:49 pm : link
... probably resembles Shawn Merriman's a lot - minus the 'roidz.

Sure he had a lot of athletic talent that he didn't live up to, but he was a Giant great.

Injuries - self inflicted and otherwise - derailed him.

It was a beautiful time, Philly fans chased Graham off the internetz because he sucked compared to JPP XD

I definitely soured on JPP. Poor locker room presence and no love of the craft like Strahan. Osi developed a better bull rush move. Quintessential Reese pick.

Seemed to get nicked up one or two times a game. Having to come off the field and sit in the sidelines for key series at a time
But how come

When I kept saying that JPP was an immature lazy crybaby who couldn't be relied on (since way before the firework incident) I was told to "F off", "You are clueless" and other gems by the BBI thought police?

I don't know about that. His % if snaps was always very high.

If anything he should have come out more often

Agreed.
I like to see the Giants rid themselves of overpaid players on the

downside of their skills.

But I like it more when we have someone at least as productive to replace him. I don't think that they have him.

In 2016, in 12 games, JPP had a good season. Seven sacks, three forced fumbles, five passes batted away at the LOS.

Last year a little less. In sixteen games eight sacks, two forced fumbles, four passes batted down. Not great, but is there someone better to replace him. Seems like if you say win now and pass up your next QB you would keep all your best players to make that run.

Is JPP a little like Banks. Carl got going in 1986, first Super Bowl win. In 1987, the strike season, he peaked with 9 sacks. Then for the remainder of his nine seasons with the Giants he never picked more than 4.0 in the season.

In the current era, Banks probably would have been cut in 1990 when he only played in nine games with 1.5 sacks. Too injury prone and ineffective to keep at a high price.

JPP..
FatMan in Charlotte : 9/12/2018 8:21 pm : link
getting traded helps alleviate what his replacement is. It turned into BJ hill who will likely make an impact.
I mean the back injury forever changed him as a player
bhill410 : 9/12/2018 8:27 pm : link
He was never the same after that injury in season 2. The freakish athleticism that was so important to his game evaporated.
The back injury . . .

Banks was a 3-4 LOLB, not expected to be the primary pass rusher, like a 4-3 RDE.
OK. Here's a stat that you won't believe on Banks

Because they wanted the flexibility of having him inside on passing downs. Of course, gaining a bunch of weight isn't a great idea for a guy with back problems.
