looks interesting too and more affordable
Is the 6.5 screen
arniefez : 9/12/2018 2:48 pm : link
a larger total size than the 8 plus? I know the screen is larger but is the overall phone larger?
Doesn't sound
pjcas18 : 9/12/2018 2:49 pm : link
like anything revolutionary unless the speed really is much faster.

One thing I will share about by iPhone 8 that sounds the same as the XS and XS Plus is I was on vacation on the cape last month and we had an inflatable raft anchored about 20 yards offshore.

I swam out there to the boat, and my youngest and I were going in and out of the boat and snorkeling (as well as you can off the cape) and she went in the boat and yelled to shore "mom take my picture" upon hearing that I thought "where's my phone, I'd like to get some pictures too" and I went holy shit, my phone is in my bathing suit pocket. I went back to shore and figured my phone was toast.

Got back to our beach house later that day, phone worked perfectly, no rice, no hair dryers, no speaker phone issues, no battery problems, nothing; it just worked. I do believe I was not in water deeper than 2 meters, but I had that phone submerged in the ocean in my pocket for a good 20 minutes.

That water resistance is no joke (at least for me it worked).

They’re about the same. The XS Max is a millimeter or so smaller.
they had a better day with the iWatch 4

my company does fall detection so it’s cool to see Apple get into it. I’m interested in the EKG feature, need to do more research on it.

arcarsenal : 9/12/2018 2:58 pm : link
I skipped over the 8 and the X - so, I'm thinking one of these is probably my next phone. I still have a 7+.

Really nothing wrong with it, it's just been 2 years so I'm getting to the point where I'd probably like a new one.

I’m yet to splurge on the watch, this may be the one.

I have a 5 so I've been waiting for these, lol. Especially since iOS updates no longer support the 5.

I just dont want to be walking around with a TV remote in my pocket.

yes
giantfan2000 : 9/12/2018 3:31 pm : link
I know it starts at $1099
but those starter level iPhones never have enough storage forcing a consumer to get the next level which is always $200 more that is how Apple makes so much $$ on iPhones ..

but the fact that Apple is selling a phone that cost $1449 is pretty incredible
I have an iPhone 6s and have been looking to upgrade

How much battery is this XS vs 6S battery?
Also, can you charge it wirelessly?
What are you guys putting on your phones
UConn4523 : 9/12/2018 3:36 pm : link
where you need 500 gigs?

The extra cloud storage is exponentially more cost effective. And with music now being cloud based I need less storage now than I did 5 years ago.

in the Dual Sim they talked about.

I fucking hate carrying around two phones, one for work and one for personal.

I'd rather have two sim cards in one phone and still use both numbers, seems like it may be possible soon

i have the x and love it - doesn't seem like much new

unless you want the bigger phone. Wonder what kind of deals will be available for the 8/x now. I'd probably recommend just getting the x if the value is good - it's a really good phone.
I'm pretty sure the X has been discontinued
arniefez : 9/12/2018 3:52 pm : link
You can still buy the 7 & 8 at lower prices. The replacement for the X is the XS and the XS Max is a larger phone that wasn't available last year.

The battery is drastically improved and yes it has the wireless charging. I upgraded from the 8 to the X and it was a huge improvement. Now these two new ones even improve on the X, 30 minutes and 1.5 hours more battery life respectively.

That is one huge phone. I think it's the biggest screen on a main line phone so far - the Note 9 is only 6.4".
I’m surprised that there isn’t a iPhone 8 successor size wise
Jim in Fairfax : 9/12/2018 4:42 pm : link
All 3 new phones are larger than the the iPhone 8. I know big phones are popular, but there’s still a big market for phones for that form factor that fits in a pocket.

still available for sale on verizon (and im sure the other carriers also).
Sorry if I was confusing about the X
arniefez : 9/12/2018 5:00 pm : link
I'm sure there's still available inventory. But they're not making any more once they sell off what they have. They're going to continue manufacturing 7's and 8's as the lower priced phones.
i have the 7 plus and it fits in my pocket just fine.

The X really isn’t that much bigger than the 8. I barely noticed a difference after the upgrade. Even with a case the X fits comfortably in dress pants, etc. But I see what you mean. Something closer to 5” would certainly have a market

Just google Qi Wireless charger. They are like $10-$20, throw it in your nightstand and you’re all set. Literally just lay your phone on top and it starts charging.

Moore's Law. Apple would still be making 4" phones that fit well in women's hands if they could.
What is Moore’s law?

Moore’s Law is a statement made by Intel founder Gordon Moore back in the 60s. It states that the density of transistors on an integrated circuit will double every two years. It’s remained remarkably true up to this point. It explains why computers and electronics have become both more powerful and smaller at the same time.

But it has absolutely nothing to do with why iPhones keep getting bigger.

I have an iphone 6, which I have been quite happy with for the last three years.

But, it's nearing its end for me -- most of all I need more memory than the 32 I have.

Anything worth waiting for in this bunch or any recommendations for the 8 or the X prior to that?

i'm o T-Mobile (if that matters).

Thanks!

The iPhone X has been discontinued. The carriers still have some inventory I think, but I don’t think they’re discounting them. The new XS is the same price and size, so unless you see a great deal on the X there’s no point. The XS and XS Max start shipping next week. Your call if it’s in your budget and you think they’re worth it.

The XR doesn’t come out for another 4-6 weeks. The 8 has a $100 price cut.

Rover : 9/13/2018 9:31 am : link
I have ATT and if I buy through them instead of paying at once I can do the $30 or so a month. I also get a credit for returning my old iPhone.

If I buy it from Best Buy, can I still do the installment and get credit for the iPhone 6S or must that be done only at the ATT?
.
arcarsenal : 9/13/2018 10:12 am : link
When the "plus" models were released during the 6 series, I thought they were way, way too big and that the regular version was much more ideal.

So, I got the standard 6 when it was released - but when the 7 came out, I got the plus and now I can't imagine going back to the smaller screen.

I do think this is about as big as I'd want my phone to be, though. Any bigger and it starts to not fit in pockets which becomes a problem. But, I don't put any bulky cases on my phones so there's that too. Some people put Fort Knox around these things and make them the size of an actual brick.

You can do the installment at Best Buy or most other retailers. You can trade your phone in with them, but you’ll get a Best Buy gift card that you’d have to use on a future purchase.

There are a lot of other trade/sell options that can be done separate from the phone purchase. You can trade-in with Amazon for an Amazon gift card. Gazelle trades for cash. You can sell thru Swappa.

No, it’s a mat that you have to lay the phone on. You can’t carry it in your pocket. But you don’t HAVE to charge it wirelessly. You can still plug it in with a lightning cable just as you did before.

Frankly I don’t find wireless charging very compelling. You can’t use your phone easily while charging since it has to sit flat on the mat. And it requires the phone to have a glass back instead of aluminum, which is one more expensive thing that can break on the phone. Don’t even think about not buying AppleCare: it costs $549 to repair a broken glass back.
