Your story is an interesting one very similar to Alejandro Villinuevas. You came out of college two years ago as a defensive lineman and are not playing offensive tackle. Talk a bit about how that happened.

I was drafted by Philadelphia last year in the seventh round. I was on their practice squad then got hurt and released. I worked out for Pittsburgh as a defensive lineman. But at the end of the workout Kevin Colbert asked me to do some offensive line work and out me through some drills. He told me when the season was over hed sign me. But before the season ended I got a call from my agent and he told me Pittsburgh was signing me then as an offensive tackle.

The Steelers have quality OL and if they saw potential for Mihalik to succeed as a Tackle, it is worth the
PS spot. Not a 2018 option for the active roster, but perhaps 2019.

leave no stone un-turned.

Lions waived Mihalik after being awarded OL Donnel
Gross Blau Oberst : 9/13/2018 1:16 pm : link
Quote:
Earlier in the day, reports surfaced that the Detroit Lions were awarded offensive linemen Andrew Donnel and cornerback Dee Virgin on waivers Sunday afternoon. The Lions confirmed those additions later in the day, and announced the subsequent moves, as well.

Both offensive tackle Brian Mihalik and center/guard Leo Koloamatangi have been waived to make space for the two.

Mihaliks cut doesnt come as much of a surprise. Donnel, as a swing tackle/guard takes his spot immediately alongside rookie Tyrell Crosby as Detroits backup tackles.

Chances are he won't amount to much but Kevan Boothe was released from the Raiders who had one of the league's worst offensive lines when the Giants claimed him. The Browns had a bad offensive line and made no effort to re-sign Shaun O'Hara when the Giants signed him. Just because a bad team let's a player go doesn't mean the player can't contribute. Some times bad teams are bad because they struggle to evaluate certain players.

Wait, I am not suggesting Mihalik is going to be a contributor. I was just pointing out that it's unfair to write them off because of their previous team. I doubt Mihalik is going to be more than a PS player but you never know.

Actually, I think I could have done better!

If the DE picked me up and threw me at the QB there's a good chance that the QB would have still been standing ;>)

He has only been playing Offensive tackle for 2 years. This is what the practice squad is for, development.
They must feel he is coachable and has an opportunity to develop.
It's an upgrade over the potential of Calvin Munson. I think we have seen enough to know what we have with him.

Ereck Flowers has the size and weight.
Hmmm.

Andrew Donnel was available on waivers. The Giants didn't think he was good enough to claim. The Lions claim him and cut Mihalik. The Giants pick up Mihalik who was cut for the guy they didn't think was good enough to claim. Hmmmm.

OL frequently have balance and bend problems. They can be "jacked up" and forced back by DL, and often can't bend quickly enough to prevent pass rushers from getting around the edge.

Very true but Flowers has played tackle his whole career and was a 1st round draft choice.
This kid was drafted as a DE.
Not saying he is a starter or even will ever play but at least he his some developmental upside.
Not a bad pickup vs. Munson upside

Too early to say. Jax has a top 3 DL. Let's see how this week goes. It's pretty impossible to do worse Than the last 5 years than Reese did so there's that. I'd also Suggest Solder while over paid is the best OL
This team has had since a healthy Snee by a lot

Exactly.

And there's also schemes, and players actually getting better and understanding what it takes.

Players do improve.

It doesn't open up any cap money. All it does is cut a player at a position where we don't even have an acceptable backup. It was going to be tough to completely revamp the line in one offseason.
It's
AcidTest : 9/13/2018 7:51 pm : link
almost impossible to entirely revamp an OL in one season. My guess is that we have two new starters next year. What I would like to see is more help for Flowers, either with a RB or TE. I know we can't do it on every play, but I'd like to see it a little more often. Everybody needs OL.
I like it when they churn the bottom of the roster.
81_Great_Dane : 9/13/2018 7:59 pm : link
Try guys who have some potential, see if you can coach them up. If they don't perform, move on. Treat the last spot or two on the practice squad like extended tryouts. The odds are against finding someone good, but if you keep trying guys, you increase those odds.

The Giants have tended to do the opposite: Find guys who have some potential, and hold onto them too long, even when they don't perform.
It they want a new starting ORT THIS SEASON
David B. : 9/13/2018 8:52 pm : link
They're going to need to Trade something of high value, AND find a willing dance partner. Who's got a spare starting-quality OT?

It's that or wait till next year's draft and FA market.

He replaced the weakest position by adding Solder to LT. And Ill go out on a limb here and say by seasons end, Flowers will have done better than Bobby Hart.

How much change do some of you expect in one season with limited cap space?

I'd say if he didn't give money to Stewart he would have had some cap space to work with. IMO, the first two players that needed to be replaced on the o-line was Flowers and Hart.
