I know there is a long thread on this from earlier this morning and Mods can delete, but I felt this announcement deserved its own thread, now that it is official.
David Wright will go down as one of the greatest Met players ever. Home grown all star who was always a positive influence on the team and the city of New York. It was a pleasure to watch him play.
Good luck to David Wright on whatever is next for him.
David Wright to suit up for Mets one last time - (
New Window )
I disagree. He's the Mets' all-time RBI leader. All-time hit leader. All-time extra base-hit leader. Third in career batting average, 2nd in career homeruns, just 10 behind Strawberry. He is inexorably linked to the Mets from 2004 to the middle of this decade. And he is the All-Time Mets captain, if there was a designation.
I certainly have wished for more from Wright at times, and certainly it's a disappointing end to his career, but if you retire anyone's number, you have to retire David Wright's.
I wish I could re-live his 2007 season, his best...hit .325, 30 HRs, 107 RBIs, stole 34 bases, walked 94 times, and had a .963 OPS and won a Gold Glove to boot. But in true Mets' fashion, that season was smeared by a late season collapse when they lost 6 of their last 7 games, finished with 88 wins and one back from the Phillies, out of the playoffs. But that was not on David Wright. He hit .400 in those last 7 games. Reyes, on the other hand went 6-32 (.187) in those games, and half of those hits came in one game. And the pitching completely fell apart. Much digression here...back to Wright...I'm not a big fan of retiring numbers anyway, but if you're going to do it, I think he's deserving.
I'm glad there's some closure here and that David has finally realized that his body is never going to cooperate and allow him to play again the way he used to.
I have an unbelievable amount of respect for him and the amount of work he was putting in behind the scenes just to get to the point where he can even get on the field at all. What he's been doing these last couple years has probably been extremely difficult and frustrating and he just kept fighting and pushing the entire time. Truly inspirational and it's a shame that he had his playing career cut short by such an unlikely injury.
All my best to DW. A true pro who should always be remembered as one of the greatest players in the history of the Mets.
* What has changed in the last week that has made him "medically unable to play"
My guess is that the Wilpon's put the screws to him and didn't want to risk the insurance money. They probably offered him some sort of deal to agree to step away.
I could be wrong but this doesn't align with his attitude for the last number of months.
Had them in my cart at 3PM on Mets.com...$200 for 2 tickets and parking in one of the mid-club levels... Decided to wait until I got home to see if my daughter wanted to go since it's 6 hours of driving...
Just went to buy...sold out except for the $500 per ticket range...

That's not really what Wright's been saying. He's been making comments like "my daughter has never seen me play live at a game before", etc. I think he knew this might be it and that's why he ramped up efforts to get on the field one more time. This was likely being bounced around for months.
