The Ottawa Senators went into full rebuilding mode on Thursday, trading star defenseman Erik Karlsson to the San Jose Sharks.
The Senators received center Chris Tierney and defenseman Dylan DeMelo, prospects Josh Norris and Rudolfs Balcers, a conditional 2019 second-round draft pick and a conditional 2020 first-round pick for their captain. If San Jose re-signs Karlsson, who is entering the final year of a seven-year, $45 million contract, Ottawa receives a conditional 2021 second-round selection.
A huge move for the Sharks as they add Karlsson to a blueline that already has Burns and Vlasic.

As a Devils fan I hope the Sharks don't re-sign him. The Devils have the most cap room in the NHL and they will hand Karlsson a blank check.

and he's now as far from the East as possible for this season. Happy Rangers fan here! Hopefully he doesn't move back this way in FA next offseason.

Will we? Doesn't look like Shero likes playing the UFA game.
The conditional 2nd is whichever of the picks is highest. The Sharks also have the Panthers 2nd next year.
if SJ signs Karlsson to an extension the Senators acquire a 2nd round pick in 2021 which will upgrade to a 1st round pick if SJ reaches the stanley cup finals next season.
If Karlsson is on an Eastern conference roster next season the Sharks will also have to send another 1st round pick to the Senators. That pick can be no later than 2022.

Shero offered Shattenkirk more than the Rangers offered in free agency. The Devils weren't crazy about this years free agent class. They want to give all the young kids this season to prove themselves and then next year they will extend Hall and be more aggressive in free agency.
SJS had a weak farm going in. Surprised they were able to beat a Vegas offer. Of the prospects I like Norris. Not familiar with the other one - unless I look him up.
Norris is a good sized, American, center, was on the WJC gold medal team in 2017 with Hughes, Tkachuk, Bellows, Poehling, Farabee, Wahlstrom, etc. He's just not as skilled as those guys. But should be a solid NHL player definitely make the NFL IMO.
I'd do this trade in a heartbeat if I'm SJS.
I can't wait to see a power play with Brent Burns and Erik Karlsson on the point. It will be like an all-star game.
Burns, Vlasic, and Karlsson is the best defensive trio I can remember off the top of my head.

Rangers will also have a lot of cap space also and let's not pretend like anyone would prefer the Devils over the Rangers.
But my eyes are on the Bread Man

How do you think the Senators did here? Tierney is a good 3rd line center, DeMelo is a #6 or #7 defenseman. I know nothing of the two prospects or the conditions of the 1st and 2nd round picks.

NFL s/b NHL obviously (or not, lol)
I just read Jean Gabriel Pageau may have torn his Achilles during off-ice physical/testing.
Estimates have him out 4 - 6 months for now, could get worse.

Karlsson will go to the highest bidder. Let's not pretend that he is going to take less to go to the Rangers like Shattenkirk did.
Wish the Islanders were able to get a package like that for the snake Tavares. Would've been great to add these types of assets to a top 5 farm system. Too bad they took JT at his word when he asked not to be traded and ended up with nothing.
So if Ottawa gets the top pick (and I realize we're getting way ahead of ourselves), the Avalanche get it (or whatever pick the Senators get).

Unbelievable. Watch the Senators win the lottery and hand Hughes over to the Avs.
But I also thought they'd be historically bad last year. A whole team of 3rd liners basically with solid, but not flashy D, and a hot and cold goalie.

I think OTT got more because they have a 1st and 2nd with the prospects, but given how much better Karlsson is than Pacioretty I think it's a fair discussion because relatively Karlsson should have gotten much more.
Even as a rental, they're both rentals.

Meh. Still as many cups as hank
