This has to be a Step Up Game for Engram and Shephard

Essex : 9/14/2018 9:43 am
I know people on here rate this guys very highly and there is a reasonable basis to do that. Shepard last year if he played a full season, would have gotten over a 1,000 yards. But, of course, that would have been basically being the only viable target for most of the season. What bothers me about Shepard is that he always seems to not come through in the big occasion. Last year in the must win Philly game he messed up separate possible TDs, I also believe he dropped a big ball in the GB playoff game, and just last week he had a crucial drop. Engram, too, had good numbers last year but comes up small when we need him the most.

If this is a game we are going to win, we are going to need these guys, who are critical to our offense, to help significantly. Big plays need to be converted. It can't only be OBJ and SB if this offense is going to perform at any high level, especially given the obstacle of our offensive line.

I am looking/hoping for a big week from these two players.
It's one game

There’s really not that much being asked of them. Just understand your assignments and CATCH THE BALL. It’s really not that hard

Every week is a step-up game for every player.

You never know from week to week who is going to be a hero or who is going to be the goat. Last week Barkley and Beckham were heroes, Shepard and Engram were goats. Maybe that'll happen again, maybe not.

I thought last year, we would see SS step up....it didn't happen.....he is turning out to be an average receiver, not that much better than Randle....he has had too many drops in his career, and he is one of those guys that can't seem to stay on his feet...

Last season the buildup for EE was tremendous, and there was no way he could live up to it as a rookie....yes, he had a lot of catches, because he was the only game in town

Did i miss something on Shepard aside from the drop? Thought he still played a decent game and his blocking on Saquon's run was excellent. Drop was big, and it does seem like at critical times he drops it.

Agree with the Eli needs to step up crowd...but everyone needs to step up. I think we all want this offense to finally look like ONE unit. Big plays are great to watch, but can we finally consistently put together drives that keep the defense off the field?

If i am an OC of the Giants, i would:

start the game with the majority of plays under center
get Saquon going
chip the DE's early and often

Need to make these DE's think when rushing...never liked Eli being in the gun all the time, i personally believe he gets into more of a rhythm when going under center. I think the identity of this team needs to be a decent running game, which probably is not realistic this year. Offensive line will prove too inconsistent. If you can establish Saquon on the ground, teams have no chance of stopping this offense.

This is the better answer.

Now, we have been reminded all week from Eli's Army that Eli actually played very well; but was, as usual, the victim of circumstances.

However, the more reasonable observer knows Eli left plays and points on the field. So as the franchise QB - the person with the most responsibility to produce points - this needs to get better.

And I think it will this week because Dallas is not a good team and Eli has a good history of producing in Dallas.

One drop is all it takes to be the goat, even if he played an otherwise good game. I'm not down on the guy, just saying that nobody in particular needs to step up: EVERYBODY needs to step up. They're 0-1 and have a divisional game Sunday. 1-1 with a 1-0 record in the division is gonna look a lot better than 0-2/0-1.

I've been predicting that they'd get off to a slow start while Shurmur and Bettcher put in their systems. I think they're actually ahead of schedule. Game 1 was winnable. Game 2 should be winnable. Gotta get the next one.

I have been very critical of Eli

Last week was not a case where that seemed warranted. the OL was awful and i counted at least 3 dropped passes. I thought me missed 1 throw.

Has been overrated here since he was drafted the guy has average hands and no game breaking ability and for some reason whenever he does catch a pass he almost immediately falls down or is tackled.

He is not a bad player and every team needs players like him but for some reason BBI makes him out to be this great WR to go with OBJ.
I'm with you Essex.
mittenedman : 9/14/2018 1:36 pm : link
We keep hearing how dangerous this offense can be. Well - dangerous at the NFL means hanging 40 points on the board every once in a while. Dangerous means putting the ball in the end zone.

Every chump in the NFL has talent and can make 1st downs, etc.

Big time players/offenses light up the scoreboard.

Odell's the man. Barkely will be too. But these other guys - they have to actually be dangerous football players for all this chest bumping to pan out. Still waiting on that.

I think the second part of what you wrote is key: Every team needs players like him. You can't have an OBJ at every position. You can't find those guys, and if you do, you can't pay them.

As for Shepard, I can't tell if he's hit his ceiling. I think a lot of BBIers think he hasn't. I suspect his best football is in front of him, but I don't have any conviction on that.
I don't think BBI has overrated Shepard
Leg of Theismann : 9/14/2018 4:10 pm : link
Literally he had one bad game and again it was against the best D in the league, first game of the season in a new system. If anything I think Shepard is underrated around the league. He would be ideal as a slot receiver, and Shurmur will find ways to work him into the slot, but he has proven in his first 2 years he has what it takes to be a WR2. 3rd year he is due for a breakout season. Don't let one game fool you. Defenses are going to be focused on on 1A) Beckham 1B) Barkley 2) Engram and finally 3) Shepard. He's proven he can be productive against favorable matchups. He might not end up with 1000 yards this season but I bet he comes close to that and at the very least I think he's going to be key on 3rd downs.

Again he's not a WR1 but he's exactly what you would want in a guy who can make plays as a result of everyone else on the offense getting most the attention. I could totally see defenses putting him in 1-on-1 coverage and I bet he wins most of those against the average CB in the league.

Totally agree. WR is not a position that is very easy to come in and become the face of the franchise in your rookie year (unless you're OBJ and basically an alien from some wide receiver planet). It takes a lot of reps and practice and study to understand the nuances of getting open and shredding zones in the NFL. But in his first 2 years I think he has looked very good, ahead of his years, and 3rd year players are known to blossom and step up multiple levels in a single year. Beckham seems to treat him like a little brother and I'm sure that has something to do with it, as Shep seems very humble and willing to learn. I just have a good feeling about Shep the next couple seasons, let's not count him out just because of one big drop he had in the 4th quarter.
Sometimes I wonder if I'm watching the same game as others.
Keith : 9/14/2018 4:19 pm : link
Shep isn't a guy that can be counted on? He always messes up in big spots? I don't share that opinion at all. He's not an explosive guy like OBJ, but he's about as solid as you can expect. He's def a guy that I think Eli can count on., He consistently makes tough catches, takes big hits and shows strong hands. Oh wait, he dropped a ball last week so he must suck.

My goal is not to kill Shepard, and I even said in the original post that there is a reasonable basis to think he could be good, but to get snarky and say “I don’t know what games you guys are watching” or that it was just one game last week, is insulting to giants fans who actually watch games and remember.

I thought shepard did ok. He had 3 catches for first downs that helped keep us in the game. Anybody that expects a receiver to not have some drops is going to be disappointed a lot.
