All-22: Shurmur play calls show how dynamic offense can be

GiantsAlwaysAndForever : 9/14/2018 2:38 pm
A breakdown here of some of Pat Shurmur's play calls from Week 1. I really like how he mixes personnel and formations and is not afraid to take deep shots at any time regardless of down and distance.

All-22 breakdown of Pat Shurmur's offensive scheme and play calls in Week 1 - ( New Window )
Awesome stuff

I was really encouraged by a lot of what I saw offensively from a tactical/schematic standpoint.

Shurmur is going to get these guys in positions to make a lot of plays. It's on the players to not leave them on the field. Unfortunately, that's what happened against JAX. The plays we missed could have been the difference.

I am very, very confident in this coach and what he brings to the table offensively. We are not going to see the same hapless offense we saw last year (and at points in 2016). Once this train gets rolling, I think we'll have a pretty good O.

It has to start Sunday, though. We can't afford to start 0-2 if we want this season to mean anything.
but...but...

Thanks for sharing. Really good article. I hope the line finds a way to at least be average, letting Shurmur really open up his whole playbook.
Good grief. Darius just threw Omameh down

like a ragdoll on that Barkley play. Not good.
too many 3rd down passes were less than the yardage mark
Youtoo : 9/14/2018 6:12 pm : link
We did that under McAddoo. Well short of the yardage mark and hope someone can run for it. That did not work under McAdoo and did not work against Jacksonville. I did not like that.
Well, we were 3rd and double digits

Our OL sucked from the first play of the game. With that craziness Eli was still something like 10/10 to start the game.

Barkley was hit on something like 50% of his carries at or behind the LOS (according to one article).

Honestly our whole season depends on our OL starting to gel and play competently.

Not saying these 2 are equal in any way but David Wilson was almost always hit in the backfield. Thought I saw Barkley dance around to find a hole about 3 times. He was tackled for a loss. He could have just plowed through the mess straight ahead and had 2-3 yards. Barkley will learn. I think Barkley is used to having a week Oline.

Yes, because Shurmur adapts to who his players are, instead of trying to shoehorn them into the same system and then trying to throw them out when they don't fit the system like certain coaches....
Really stands out when watching those clips

how often a play looks terrible live, but was really set up well and should have been a big gain had one guy not missed his assignment or blow his block
Dan Schneider has shot to the front of Giants reporters already

I always wonder where the line is between praising a back for his patience like Bell and criticising Barkley for dancing around trying to find a hole. Is it success? Or am I missing something?
Great post, thanks!

Required reading for McAdo’h apologists. Schumer schemed more open receivers and created more mismatches in one game than ol’ slick did the entire time he was steeling the Maras money. Should be a long day for the Pokes defense.
