That Empty Feeling Of Knowing There Is No Season . . . Again

Ralph.C : 9/17/2018 12:16 am
I’ve always been optimistic about the Giants. Always.
Tonight I tried to muster up that ol’ faith and excitement for them but the reality of what we are right now cannot be overcome by the rosiest of rose-colored glasses. Whenever we’ve had success in the past, we’ve had an offensive line that could impose their will when they played cohesively. That is just not there now and there is little hope for it to change this season.

It’s depressing.

What I envision happening is another low-win season and another high draft choice next year. This time we grab the best QB available in the draft and more offensive linemen. I love Eli but he is the wrong fit for this team right now. He’d be better off being a plug-in on a fortified team who is a QB away from SB contention like Peyton was to the Broncos.

Rebuilding is fine but it just sucks knowing we haven’t a season again this year.

Obviously I have no idea if it's true

but I feel like Mara took the outcry for Eli being benched as everyone thinking that Eli should be our QB for the forseeable future instead of what the situation actually was.

No one believed that Geno Smith was going to be a Giant after last year, and so everyone was rightfully pissed that we sat our long term franchise QB for some bum because our lame duck coach thought it was a good idea.

So I wonder if that somehow sort of spiraled into "Eli is our guy no matter what" and not drafting a QB as a successor because of the blowback from that situation. I mean, I hope that's not true, but considering how much they've put into trying to make this team competitive around Eli and not embracing rebuilding, I really wonder.

I think people who read my pre-draft posts saw that I was torn on the QB/Barkley debate. But I kept coming back to "if all things are roughly equal, you have to take the QB."

Now if Saquon ends up being a Hall of Fame RB and the other QBs "just guys", then the Giants made the right decision.

But we're not going to hear the end of that already tiresome debate for years to come.

The problem is, Eli looks shot. And our #2 is Alex Fucking Tanney. Wow.

This. All of this. I am a huge fan of Eli Manning, and I also think Saquon is going to be an amazing, possibly HOF caliber player. I still absolutely believe taking a QB was the right move.

QBs are just so much more important than literally any other position on the football field that Saquon will have to be a HOF level player and Darnold, Rosen, and Allen will all have to be mediocre at best to justify that selection. It will be a bad pick if any of them even end up a solid 2nd tier QB, semi regular Pro Bowl level QB since the impact on winning or losing a game is so much greater than ANY RB in today's game.

This is how the Giants should have handled this offseason, in my view.

You sit Eli down at some point and tell him you're taking a QB at 2. The job is his this season, though the young guy is going to get some snaps if games get out of hand (down multiple scores late). Year two and moving forward will be an open QB competition, may the best QB win.

If any of that was unacceptable to Eli, he would have been traded (preferably) or released. I love Eli. He's probably my favorite player of alltime, but it's a business too and you have to prepare for the future.
Jan in DC nailed it IMO.

The public backlash for benching Eli.

of bad football. even in 2016 when they got the wild card, the wins were usually by a small margin and thanks to some beckham heroics. there was a lot of ugly football that season.

It's hard to not come to the belief that John Mara is over his head.

This team keeps thinking it just needs to tweak things in the offseason.

The Jacksonville loss didn't concern me. The Dallas loss is defcon level. We just got our asses kicked by a team that shouldn't be able to kick anyone's ass.

It's not like we can even make a switch at QB now. Alex Tanney is the back-up and we ditched the guy with any chance of really playing in 2018 (Davis Webb - regardless of how you felt about him).

We're looking for yet another season being over by October 1st.

Many pro sports teams get caught in that "We just need to tweak" delusion. I can understand trying to tweak one season because the alternative is acceptance that a prolonged rebuild is the reality.

What really sucks is that Barkley's best years are going to be spent on rebuilding team. Hind-sight is indeed 20-20 and we should have taken a QB.

It's been rough being a Giant and Met fan these last few years.

On QBs in the draft

I thought it the guy from West Virginia was good.
It all starts at oline

Giants need to find some guy who can evaluate and develop offensive line talent. Next 3 years of 10 year rebuilding project. Dak looked like Joe Montana behind Dallas line, altough they have had injuries themself.

Was wishful thinking more of a driver than building a new team? Did that lead the to the Barkley pick instead of taking a QB (Darnold) that we can build around?

Or, is it attendance/money? OBJ, Barkley and Eli are stars. People spend money on stars - tickets, jerseys, etc.

Mara is in over his head, he needs to step away and let someone manage the team. Is Gettleman the guy? Could be, but he is also one of their cronies.

We don't know yet, we are only 2 games in. In one of them, they were hanging in there with one of the best teams in the league (J.Ville)...missed opportunities to win.

In the other, they were beaten soundly...even though the score was only 20-13 in the end.

The story has yet to be written...not a good start overall. I'm not hopeful unless they learn how to block.

On to Houston next week, but their pass rush is even meaner than Dallas. Their young QB might feast on our secondary and run the same plays as Dak with his legs. Ugh.

Praying for Manning's health.
