A lot of this has to fall on John Mara

bigblue12 : 9/17/2018 12:00 pm
He was on board last year with sitting down Eli. He got absolutely crushed by his fanbase and did a complete 180, cleaning house. He had the perfect opportunity to move on from Eli and had his scapegoat, but instead decided to appease the fans and stick with Eli. I think he completely misread the fanbase and should have been hiring people to build up the team for a the next ten years, not put band aids and try and win now. I don't think Mara was ever hiring someone who wanted to start over and get rid of Eli after what happened last year. It was short sighted and a reaction to bad press, which he and all owners hate. Of course, this is all my opinion.
short term v long term

Buck stops here so all of this falls on Mara.

My bet is that as he interviewed GM candidates, DG sold him by saying the team is not far away, Eli still has it, I can build a line for your fast, etc.

Can't fault DG for wanting to get a job. We all sell during job interviews. But Mara liked the easy answers not any that involved moving on from Eli.

He now suffers the consequences of a seasons possibly over by the end of September. And it will then get ugly in the media, on this board and in the stadium.
The problem goes back to 2015 or before.

Mara let Reese, Ross, Quinn, and then McAdoo run this team so far into the ground between 2012 and 2017 that nobody was going to turn it around in one season.
A lot of what has to fall on Mara?

The 0-2 start with 14 to play?

Okay, I will try to stop being annoying with my 0-2 mantra, as annoying as it is to me with these definitive proclamations on here today
And Chris Mara

...nobody can fire the owner unless he does something politically incorrect. If ever there was an argument for scrapping the income tax and replacing it with a wholesale estate tax, this situation is it. Let people earn their franchises.

Should have been thinking multi-year rebuild

After last season. Instead he was thinking championship window, God knows why. Somehow he looked at one good year in six not as an outlier but as an indication that the team was on the cusp of greatness. Boggles the mind.

The reaction to the Eli benching spooked him and he made some bad decisions as a result, chief among them hiring DG and empowering him to blow the most important draft pick the franchise has had in 14 years.

I would be more annoyed about the Giants performance if I was on board with the decision making but I’m not, I think they are managing this all wrong and I’m not sure any of them really know what they are doing. It’s a shame but it’s easy to divorce yourself from results when a team is not managed well. I have been a Knicks fan my whole life, I’m used to this stuff. Never dreamed I’d be as perplexed by the Giants decision making as I am with the Knicks, but here we are.

The Giants are a dumb organization and way behind the times. Accept that and the rest is easier to deal with.

This is my fear

We may me going back to those dark years where Mara's made one bad decision after another. I can see John taking another 5 years of losing before realizing he has to stay out of football decisions.
as mentioned in another thread

I agree 100% and have been trying to get this point across for years now. This 'win now' approach by ownership has crippled the franchise for 6 years and it looks like it will take at least 3 more years to recover from, assuming they buy into a full rebuild.

I believe ownership is too involved in the on-field decision-making process. I think one reason Reese was retained for longer than he should have been was bc he willingly took the heat for many personal decisions that were pushed by ownership. I'm afraid Gettleman was hired under a similar pretense.

I understand its early and I do hope I'm wrong but damn, this repeating the same mistake over and over is frustrating.

And they ran him off. I’m glad they feel the need to continue to give Eli everything he wants. Change all the players, change all the coaches, change the entire offense. And it’s still everyone’s fault but his.
Maybe, just maybe,

Roger Goodell will come to our rescue, like Rozelle did?

It's not everyone's fault but his, it is a team game and it is the team's fault, and his inability to make proper quick reads based on the D's blitz packages is a real issue... but when your offensive linemen can't pick up a simple ET stunt, when your FB completely whiffs on a blitz pick up, when your $15M/yr LT can't block the defender lined up right in front of him... you CAN'T put *most* of the blame on Eli.
History has shown

That whenever a Mara gets too involved in personnel decisions, it’s not good news.

We have a winner!

Mara has had an absolutely awful stretch here. I’m terrified going forward.

The guy fired coughlin, hired mcadoo, then fired mcadoo two years later. That right there is just brutal. Brutal!
Mara is selling seat licenses

concessions, souvenirs, etc, that's his priority whether he'll transparently voice it or not. If the headline is "win now" he has a better chance of selling it to us.

Vote with your wallet.

that his first choice of coaches was Patricia, I'm not sure how sound his judgment is.

Your continuing soft spot for Aaron Rodgers' coffee go-for is puzzling to any normal person. McAdoo didn't know his ass from a two base hit, was in over his head and to claim that he was somehow prescient in trying to sit Manning down in favor of Smith or Webb is laughable.
