John Mara’s second offensive selections

D_Giants : 9/17/2018 1:06 pm
Shurmur is the second offensive-based head coach in 3 years. Mara canned Tom Coughlin (TC) for a roster that Jerry Reese gave TC, a roster that has prompted the team to overpay for mediocre talent (e.g., LT Solder). Spagnuolo ran a great defense in 2016, and for his efforts and McAdoo’s sheer incompetence, they got rid of him (along with the well-deserved terminations of McAdoo and Reese).

Spags was not the first very good DC to hit the road. (The Giants defense during the 2007 playoffs was superb.) A guy named Tom Landry did, too, in 1960. Then, in 1991, the Mara clan selected the card-counting Ray Handley to assume the reins, letting another unworthy defensive coordinator, Bill Belichick, hit the road.

Our new tandem of Gettleman (DG) and Shurmer (PS) seem worse than Reese and McAdoo. The O-line play has degraded every year over the past 3 years. DG, who apparently believes that decisiveness—quick decision-making, necessarily equates to good decision-making—has constructed his own O-line, keeping only Flowers. He traded the team’s best center, Brett Jones, for a 7th round pick. Now, the team’s center is a back-up guard. (DG also dumped Hunter Sharp as PR / KR for the great Kaelin Clay, a guy that spent not a single day in camp and whose only ability is in muffing punts or letting them bounce off of him.) DG’s ‘corporate’ mentality of team-buiding ignores the emotions and connections between and among players, with the result that we now see. He apparently does not consider that it is much easier to fire players than to find better replacements. Perhaps he should become the victim of his methodology.

PS, like McAdoo, no doubt interviewed well, perhaps better than Spags. Like McAdoo, he appears to be a fraud. Few mentioned that he was Spags’ offensive coordinator with the Rams; while the Rans’ defense improved, its offense—like the Giants’ current offense—floundered. Spags’ record as HC with the dysfunctional Rams (at a bad ownership time) was his ‘weakness, while Shurmur’s ugly record as HC of the Browns was overlooked.

Unfortunately, the owners pick the front office people. Their picks determine the fates of their teams. I live among Redskins fans who are resigned to mediocrity so long as Snyder owns that team. I think it is time for Giants fans to realuze that we have the same problem.

you can say DG and Shurmur are worse than Reese and McAdoo. Sure the Giants are 0-2 but they were in the game last week against a SB favorite.

Read the piece carefully. I did not say that.

Of Mcadoo, Reese and Ross in less than 1 year.

And Spags hiring saucked, the unninnovative thinking and living in the past that was one of the many bad things of the previous regime.

That is called throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Spags’ defense is why the Giants were 11-5 in 2016. It had little to do with the offense.
Wow,

using Landry and Spags in the same sentence?

And got exposed by a not so great GB team.

The Ziggy Ansah and Dion James draft should have raised alarms that the old Accorsi stockpile pass rushing 4-3 dlineman no longer works, especially when you're picking Damontre Moore. Instead we doubled down on Spags.
I read it carefully

Actually you did, although you said "seem ... worse," which means the same thing.

It is surely too soon to judge either DG or PS. But, more importantly, it is not too soon to judge John Mara, and I think your analogy to Dan snyder is spot on. We may be facing a very longterm problem.
It's too early to judge Shurmur

But I will say this...there appears to be some scary similarities to McAdoo. Strange playcalling, bad clock management and bizarre in game decisions. Those 3 things are not the fault of the roster or the QB. Those 3 are on the coach and so far they are strikingly similar to the way McAdoo did things.

that Handley got the job in May after Parcells was diagnosed with health problems that forced him to resign as head coach. I'm not defending Handley, but lets at least understand and acknowledge the circumstances
Geez I could swear

That the Giants have won Championships under the Mara s ownership. In fact if I m not mistaken at least four of them have come during the Super Bowl era.

Yet I m being advised to get use to the "Daniel Snyder" era for the New York Giants.

I don t know, seems a bit unfair, but that's just me
It is almost like..

people failed to see anything Spags did after winning the SB.

He presided over a terrible HC tenure and had 3 of the most historically bad defenses in NFL history.

At least Shurmur the OC just took a team really deep into the playoffs.
