O-Line problem, players or coaching?

DaveW2 : 9/17/2018 7:13 pm
Sorry if this has already been discussed. I admit I haven't read through all the posts since last night.

I read somewhere though, (beat writer, analyst, expert, whatever) that in their opinion the players performed well enough in their 1-on-1 match ups, but were clueless when it came to assignment / communication, especially on blitzes and stunts.

This should correctable, right?
Just read Shurmur's presser

Where he mentioned that they were well prepared for the Dallas DL stunts and blitzes.
This was in Montana's thread above

from Brian Baldinger. If they were coached well, it sure as shit didn't show...

Sure didnt look like it. Hell they have two years worth of film to look at because the Cowboys did the same thing to them then.
I believe it is a combination of both, mediocre players, at best,

coached by, so it seems, inept coaches.
How About Time?
Samiam : 9/17/2018 9:32 pm : link
Maybe all of the above is true but time playing together is also a factor. These guys are all playing new positions for the team next to people they never played with, had maybe a dozen organized practices and shit the bed. Plus they're all playing for a new position coach. What are the chances they'll play as a well oiled cohesive unit after 2 games?
Layman's opinion:
mrvax : 9/17/2018 9:52 pm : link
They appear to not know who or where to block on pass plays. On runs, it looks like they aren't strong enough or lack the correct technique to open a lane.
Questionable talent (which we knew about)
djm : 9/17/2018 10:13 pm : link
Little to no cohesion which we hoped wouldn’t be a problem but clearly has.

We just need another year or so. Then maybe they will block something from time to time.
Maybe have
mrvax : 9/17/2018 10:17 pm : link
Snacks, Hill & Tomlinson rotate in as blocking TEs from time to time.

Finally......some logic! While I hoped for better play (obviously), I think that we do have to take in to consideration all of the factors that you mentioned. Its been TWO games against two pretty good defenses. If the same issues are still occurring after game 5, 6.....then its panic time and obviously major major issues.

The one positive for me is that they didnt seem to be physically overwhelmed, which was an issue multiple times last year. So I guess im still keeping the faith, gonna give it a few more games to see how this plays out. NFL is funny sometimes; things do change on a dime. If they didnt there would be a bunch of millionaire gamblers running around Vegas.
I think they should flip Omameh and Hernandez...
Milton : 9/18/2018 12:16 am : link
...but it's probably too late for Hernandez to adjust to the other side of the line. Omameh had his best season last year as an OLG and Hernandez's skill set is better served on the right side than the left (his strength being run-blocking, not pass-blocking).

p.s.--I wonder how Solder would be at right tackle, because another idea is to play Wheeler at his natural left tackle position and put Solder on the right.
Maybe...

Hunter is the wrong guy for the oline job. This is his first year with NYG. Maybe this was a key foul up by Shurmur...

It's probably the most important position coach, you would think they did all the due diligence necessary to get the very best guy available. It surprised me that they chose someone who had spent the last year out of football. If I remember correctly, Fassel's first OL coach hire was Matsko, but they had "philosophical" differences and he was replaced with McNally (who was holding onto his nuts at the time).

Couldn’t agree more re: the importance of the position. Look at New England. They have Dante Scarnecchia, who I believe is one the greatest oline coaches in history. He was so vital to that machine that when he retired three years ago the Pats oline slipped. So Belichick talked him out of retirement and he’s picked up where he left off - building a tough, smart, stable unit. And with players who aren’t top tier guys.

He’s a savant. A guy I believe should be in serious consideration for the HoF.

Separate note - you’ve been watching Justin Herbert for OU?

Not yet, but he's on a short list of QBs I'm sure to be watching soon enough.

One positive, our interior linemen are stronger on pass protection, and not constantly getting pushed into Eli's shins, which is his kryptonite.

His other kryptonite is a zerg rush jail break 18 pressures or 6 sacks, but than again Brady looked pedestrian last Sunday.

5 guys put together take ime to gel, addd to that the limited practice time under the new agreement.

Despite the tough going - with that big line, they need to stickwith the run. 3rd and 4th quarter can wear defenders down w/physicality.

I'd be interested in whether their ability to be physical is maximmized under this scheme?

Hard to tell
Phil in LA : 9/18/2018 10:34 am : link
they don't seem to know who to block. So on a lot of plays you see unblocked rushers, and Giant OL's standing around not blocking anyone. So either the players are stupid and can't figure out the play book, or the Coaches aren't doing a good enough job of explaining. it.

The line is vets for the most part .... so how much extra explaining is needed??? The stunts were not exotic just basic stunts ...
