Great insight as always! Hope the line gels so Eli doesn't go out in a body bag this year.
I am also somewhat down/hesitant on Landon Collins - do you think he would be better off at LB? Focusing closer to the LOS and giving us more coverage capability in the short/intermediate part of the field?
I made mention in the game thread last night that he was actually committing himself too soon on run plays. He was over committing to a gap before the RB had committed. You could see Zeke then switch direction and each time had a big gain because Ogletree had taken himself out of the play.
That, plus his mistakes (started showing in pre-season) in pass coverage leave me scratching my head as to what DG saw on film before signing him.

It's a thought I've had for awhile, I am still trying to really grasp what the new scheme is having him do.
A full time move to LB isn't necessary, but its an option. Again I don't think he is a bad player at all, but paying him top tier S money, I would be hesitant about.
optimism. I was heavily criticized for pointing out Ereck Flowers was terrible again. Even some beat writers like Jordan Raanan said he looked great in the one on ones against Lawrence, as you pointed out, but, to me, he is a classic idiot who does not work hard and if he watches film then I would be the most surprised guy in the word because, as you said, he has no clue on stunts or any other games that are played against him. He is absolutely clueless. And I firmly believe the fact he is still starting in spite of his constant mediocrity has an impact on the entire team and certainly on the offensive line. How can you believe in merit as a player when you see this guy? As much as I wanted Jerry Reese gone, similarly I want this guy gone and gone yesterday.
Even just a half decent line and I think we could score 25+ points every game...just an average line. This line is nowhere close to that. How Eli continues to stay healthy is beyond a miracle! I had great faith in James Bettcher but this D looks to be average and frankly I do not understand why Carter is not getting more playing time.
On Collins 100%. He's not anywhere near the type we need to throw big $ at. I can't see Gettleman doing that with the $ we just shelled out to a WR and RB and our need to get bigger on both lines.
deserves more play time. He definitely stands out whenever he is on the field. Martin always seems to be the guy someone makes a play on, Carter should take more of his reps.
I hope Collins can improve, I like him a lot as a player and would love to have him here for a long time. All going to come down to how much $ I suppose, and if Giants are truly rebuilding then the reality is he isn't enough of a game changer to be throwing money at with needs higher needs across the board. Will certainly leave the S position bare, and our secondary in general in a bad spot though.
Pass rush is still a huge issue with this team, I am not confident that Vernon will come in and be super effective in changing that either. Add that to the list of high needs next year as well.
The New York Giants offensive lineman Will Hernandez had a much improved week 2. He finished with a 81.8 overall grade which was the highest on the Giants offense from week 2. He also finished with a 86.7 run blocking grade which was 2nd overall among week 2 offensive guards.
Sy, any thoughts on why there's such a disparity between the two evaluations?

He did well straight ahead run blocking, for sure. But when I see pressures and sacks (multiple) I put a lot in to my grading. And I have a feeling some of these + blocks they had on his running plays were no-impact
Is he a little slower? Less disciplined? Doesn't know Bettcher's scheme? Isn't used properly by Bettcher? Freelances too much? Trying too hard? Not trying hard enough? Weaker guys around him? It's strange for him to have so much less impact as a vet and a leader than when he was a rookie, playing on instinct.
handled Lawrence one on one very well for the half I watched. The guards were awful as you said. Omameh does not seem capable of defending the stunts. Maybe that is why Jax let him go?
but, if we feel the season is slipping (say we lose two more games) then I say trade Collins while you can and get a pick or two for him. We need to reload the roster and FA is not the way. Though a draft is a crap shoot, the more opportunities you have the better chance you have of finding quality players.
We need to revamp Oline, need a future QB, a true FS and will need LB'ers for our hybrid 3-4 scheme. Did I mention Oline? We need at least 3 guys...

Flowers sucks and it is not even in question. He is off blance too often, even on so called winning plays and he just does not play to his size and strength.

You aren't getting much for a safety that has been slightly above average for a year-plus that is also a FA in January.
The All Pro season is the outlier so far. He was rough as a rookie, had a great year 2 when the entire D was on fire, took a step back last year (playing through high ankle sprain) and has done nothing so far this year. When was the last time this guy made a big play?
It's shaping up like a Weston Richburg redux. Great year 2 which you assume he'll keep building on. Richburg still got paid but not by the Giants.
I loved the way Collins was being used in run support during the preseason but I've seen none of that the 1st 2 weeks.

2-- - You were spot on about Willie and spot on about not being impresses with Omameh.
3--- I see comments being made that no QB could prosper with this OL-- BUT - I think a point that needs to be made is that whenever this is mentioned - it's irrelevant. The idea to keep Manning and get Solder was to win. If oyu aren't going to win, what's the point of paying these guys big bucks?
Barkley is tremendous. However we have to show concern that the GM and Head Coach are poor at evaluating talent. None of them like Darnold for example. DG doesn't seem to understand positional value. Long term the RB will fade. I might be concerned but not throwing int he twel until at some point next year.

You're wrong in so many ways. First off hoop is different 5 players play both. For you to even think the two are comparable is a joke.
Secondly, I said DG may not UNDERSTAND positional value. Even someone as blind as a bat can somehow get lucky. \
Third- relating to 1-- Bowie was an obvious dumb pick. He was a one dimensional player. Using your analogy you might as well try to downplay positional value by saying Portland could have chosen Greg Wiltjer from Canada over Jordan because of positional value. The point is, Jordan vs Bowie is one player is on Earth and daily shined by the sun while the other is stuck on Venus unable to break away from the cold. Bowie was injury prone and averaged a bit over 10 a game. Hardly worth a top 3 pick.
Barkley has had nowhere to run , Barley able to take a step before being hit . Eli had little chance to get anything going . They need Vernon back in a hurry .

Thisndefense needs a playmaker! They don’t have one. I’m hoping OV could be that guy, perhaps Carter starts to become that guy, but Collins had been that guy in 2016.....what happened? Is he I’ll prepared, is it scheme? Next off-season the Giants will be looking for a difference maker on the edge IMO.

To get younger because what makes you think they will compete while Solder is is still good within a 5 year window how the team is currently constructed? Eli isn't going to get better each year is he? At 34 years old how good will Solder be? Who do you see as the QB in year 4 and 5? What you mean by "compete" is championship, right? Wheres the QB and the outstanding defense in year's 4 and 5?
In addition the alternative could have been for example not take Eli but Darnold- instead then take Hubbard at OT and Fluker at guard instead of Solder, Omameh and Stewart. That would be a much better 5 year grouping, wouldn't it be? And ofc not trade Jones. If you are going to talk "what if" over 5 years then Eli/Solder are a package of which your expectations couldn't have been too high this year, could it? And in year 3, what will Eli be?
If I recall you aren't a fan of Omameh and weren't a fan of Willie. I don't know if you were much of a fan of Jones or Halapio-- but you like Greco. But if you liked either Halapio or Jones wouldn't it have made sense to move one of the three to guard while one plays center? Yet if Greco is better than these guys - wouldn't you question the GMEN's competence of evaluating players? They had Greco 3rd string. Should they have?
And on the flipside if they aren't good, then you'd have 4 subpar OL. How is that good? And hwne you add in Collins nto being very good which you just said and I trust your analysis a lot -- and I appreciate you taking the time for all of us-- where are the playmakers on defense coming from? You've made me more depressed. We need ot build an Oline, we have an old Eil without a playmaker up front and in year 3-5 we have no vision of playmaker in the secondary and it's possible they've completely blown their evaluations on guys like Omameh, Greco (if he is good), and Willie yet we have to assume in the future everything will be okay?
I can be hopeful but skeptical. Anyways- the idea Greco is decent-- shouldn't it make us all-the-more worried about the talent evaluators for this team?
The hard decisions were not made this year...... Â
Is Solder worth what he got? Patriots traded for a LT, no problem, and he is getting paid 1/11 of what Solder got this year.....
The Hernandez euphoria is starting wear off.....
Halopio was nothing special, just cheaper than Jones....
Omameh, is a backup, not a starter, and overpaid....
Flowers was basically given the starting RT job, just like he was given the LT job......no competition in 4 years....
And how about Mr. Hunter? It's one thing to be overpowered, by a defensive lineman, that's called lack of talent.....but when your whole line can't adjust to stunts, that's partially on the players who may just be stupid, and if they are not, it's on the OL coach....
We knew it would take time for this OL to gel, but this looks like they just started playing together yesterday....
The way this team had been put together, just looks like another band aid approach.....a lot of turn over? Yes, but if you replace guys with players of the same level, how is that any better? Is Solder better than Flowers? Yes.....Is Barkley better than any RB? Yes....
Are the other four OL better than the four we had? It's certainly not looking that way.....
Who is JPP's replacement? Yes he had to go, but there is no one that comes close to him as a replacement.....
It's been 2 years and we still haven't replaced Reuban Freakin' Randle, yet....
You want to play a 3-4? Then you better have 4 linebackers....
What did you replace our FS's with?
What did you replace DRC with?
We have sucked for so long because of the band aid approach....If we are going to lose, we might as well clean house, get our cap under control, get the right people in here, and draft for our future.....
Mr. Goodell, please, pull a "Rozelle" on my NY Football Giants.....ownership is not capable of running this shit show.....
and I could not agree with you regarding Eli. No QB could have worked with the line during this game. Eli was part of the blame but not enough to make a difference given the blown assignments by the O-Linemen. Giants are in a difficult situation and will have to go through the growing pains of a new O-Line that will need to be tweaked this year and next year. Barkley is going to kill it once the line improves, and it will. This is going to be a process.
That is 6.12 inches. So, he gets the length of his dick before getting hit? That's pathetic.
Even worse when you consider that he's probably lining up 5-7 yards behind the LOS most plays and assuming he starts moving forward at the snap, is likely getting the handoff ~3 yards from the LOS. So essentially he's getting hit 2+ yards behind the LOS most plays.
Even taking out the 68 yarder, he's averaging ~2.4 ypc or close to 5 yards after contact.

It's really hard to put together a good analysis of offensive skill position players when the offensive line plays as poorly as they did.
I saw a stat that our RB's are getting hit an average of 0.7 yards after getting the ball while the next worst average in the league is 2.7 yards!
Very significant.
The number I was was actually .17 yards before contact. Not sure where I saw it. Still worst by far in the league.
That is 6.12 inches. So, he gets the length of his dick before getting hit? That's pathetic.

that's horrific!

I thought that was Randy's forte?

Randy gave me the info.
1--- I think you are vastly overrating Greco.
Yeah, it's great to hear that Greco was cut by the BROWNS last year, terrific!
