In a new biography of Belichick, ESPN’s Ian O’Connor describes not only how Young felt Handley’s intellect was superior to Belichick’s, but that Young had distaste for Belichick’s upbringing as a lacrosse player and his less-than-natty attire. O’Connor details a meeting in the late ‘80s in a conference room at the Giants’ headquarters, where he told his staff Belichick would never lead the Giants on his watch. “I was there when he said it,” Chris Mara, longtime personnel man and John’s brother, recalled in “Belichick.” |
A lacrosse-playing ‘mess’: The Giants’ enormous Bill Belichick mistake - ( New Window )
George Young did a great job in his first 10-12 years but so many of his moves over the last few years were absolutely horrible.
Still, we can blast Young all we want but his BB issue pales in comparison to the Mara family and the poor decisions they made before Young was hired. To think we had both Tom Landry and Vince Lombardi in our locker room and we hired Allie Sherman as head coach instead. Just ONE example...
Landry and Lombardi too.....

The Sherman years were not a total disaster. Allie won initially. Trading Sam Huff and poor drafts were responsible for the Giants decline and trade and draft decisions were made by Wellington Mara whose evaluation skills were very, very bad. He was ultimately replaced by Young only because Jack Mara demanded that Wellington cease making decisions.
From Parcells/Belichek/Simms to Handley/Groh/Hosteteler. From Super Bowl win to 8-8.
Drafting Jarrod Bunch and Kanavis McGhee with the first 2 picks this year.
It was as though Parcells intentionally destroyed the team.
Worst.
Thing.
Ever.
He was starting to turn around a shit franchise in Cleveland before they decided to move and part ways. Then, there's the games he's had without Brady.
Although it's fair to suggest he might not have been as successful, I'm pretty sure there's no reason to believe he wouldn't be a great coach even without TB.

If not then who's to say he doesn't fizzle out in four years like he did in Cleveland

His ability to find talent, coach them and develop a game plan to match the opponent's strengths and weaknesses is superior. I do not think that would have changed much if he was our coach. Yes, the QB is a factor but it is not the end all.
There was an interview with Bill Walsh years ago when he said his system was the key to the success and that Montana was a guy who fit his system and could operate within it. He eluded to the fact that others would have also been successful. It was proven when Young stepped in and they continued to roll.
Bellicheck would have failed here too. No talent. George Young had a lot of power. Bellicheck would not have been able to pick players.
His son Tim Mara jr was the person who feuded with Wellington and the person responsible for the George Young years that mattered. Tim Mara jr sold his half of the team to the Tisch family after the 1990 Super Bowl for 75 million dollars. I think the Indians did better on Manhattan.
As far as Belichick goes if you need to blame Parcells for him leaving the Giants knock yourself out but it isn't true and anyone who was around the Giants in the late 80's knew it wasn't true for decades.
Ask Chris Mara he was in the room. By the way if you were around the Giants in the late 80's and you got to see the Chris Mara show up close and personal in those days what is happening now would make perfect sense.
An old article from 2003 about Giants history - ( New Window )
For whatever reason, he and Young found a way to make it work. Young was sensational in the ‘80s at drafting. And Young deserves enormous credit rebuilding the catastrophe caused by the Maras.
Knowing what we know, it seems a sin Young was so dismissive of Belichick. But Young was an odd bird.
Belichick likely went the right route with Cleveland to escapee shadow of NY and the great Parcells...It helped him learn to build a program. That Cleveland staff was loaded...
The fucking nonsense written around here....
Look, it's just a handy way to say everything management.
FMiC for some inexplicable reason views it as some pejorative term. Which it isn't. That guy is just a real pisser that FMiC...
Until then, I think you like me just the way I am.
Oh YES!
The fucking nonsense written around here....
You have to admit no one saw those SBs appearances coming. Those two SBs under the Parcells era were based on years of building a great football infrastructure.
In other words, almost the exact opposite of what we are witnessing today in this Dark Age...
Ironically, for years, the Giants were referred to as cheap on BBI. Even when the Giants were almost always at the top of the league in paying non-salary cap positions like coaches and support staff.
There was this loop hole - and I forget the specifics - where you could sign some players by a certain date that wouldn't by counted against the cap, or at least up to a certain year. The 9ers were very good at exploiting that.
A lot of teams took years to understand they needed to bring a sharp guy on the staff that understood how to balance contract lengths, bonuses and $$ amounts so that they would not only stay under the cap, but have flexibility.
The early cap was onerous too. Not much wiggle room at all and severe penalties for going over the cap
A lot of people blame his drafts, but while he had many infamous first round misses, he did draft some good players after SB XXV - Jarrod Bunch (was good before ruined by injuries(, Ed McCaffrey and Corey Miller in 1991, Phillipi Sparks, Keith Hamilton, and Corey Widmer in 1992, Michael Strahan and Jessie Armstead in 1993, Jason Sehorn and Chad Bratzke in 1994, Tyrone Wheatley (well, not that good for the Giants though), Scott Gragg (ditto), and Charles Way in 1995, Amani Toomer and Roman Oben in 1996, Ike Hilliard, Tiki Barber, and Brad Maynard in 1997.
