I went back and rewatched the offensive snaps focusing only on Hernandez - as I did in the preseason - and I was wrong on him.
I know - who gives a sh#t but since I started 2 threads on him struggling I am officially apologizing to him and the board.
I couldn't believe my eyes but he played very well. Very good for a rookie. Power, agility and awareness on display. Good push in the run game, good working the 2nd level and pretty damn stout in pass pro. For his part he was actually creating a good pocket. Played with urgency. Clean 1st half - I don't think I saw a single negative play.
Quite surprising after watching the game live and getting the impression nobody blocked well. I've done a complete 180 and am high on him now. Will try not to make a sloppy evaluation like that again, and delete the other threads. Francesa is a dolt for calling him a bust.
its encouraging that pff and some other ranking sites have him doing well at this point
quentin nelson was labelled as a sure fire all pro and he is in a learning stage also
hernandez was a good pick that we needed, it will work out
So I do see why Shurmur said there was plenty of blame to go around, at least early.
[quote] him is ridiculous. He is a rookie coming from UTEP facing a steep learning curve. Was he pefect? no. Was he the best on the line? maybe but certainly not the worst. He is literally the least of our problems on the oline.
Might Sy'56 wish to reconsider his negative overreaction to WillH's play on Sunday?
This whole fucking board has been ridiculous after a 3-13 season and 33 new players on the roster. BBI is absurd at this point

I didn't say he's not off to a shaky start. What I said was that he is two games into his NFL career, The right side is frightening and Solder (who has been barely adequate to my eyes) is getting an ocean of money. My point is that he is the least of our problems. He still has a huge upside in my eyes, the others.... I'm not really not sure.
Sy's assessment of the Dallas game:
GUARDS/CENTERS
-The two guards were nightmares, it was the worst combined grade from the guards I have seen in 2+ years. Patrick Omameh was responsible for 2 pressures and 1 sack. He wasn’t able to sustain blocks. He has a decent punch at the line, but his man is off free within 1-2 seconds almost every time. Will Hernandez looks lost mentally. Again, the base-level athleticism is there, but it doesn’t show up because he is too slow to react. He allowed 1 pressure and 2 sacks. The first of which was about as bad as it gets. Hernandez was also completely whiffing at the second level as a run blocker. He continues to get a pass here and there for being a rookie, but there were moments where he didn’t even look competitive.
I think it's as simple as some people giving more weight to really negative plays (pressures, sacks) than others.
I think PFF just grades each individual play (from +2.0 to -2.0) and then weights all the plays equally. While their is some merit to this approach, I'm not sure it's weighting the strongly negative plays enough. For example, player A has 5 neutral (0.0 grades) plays for a total grade of 0.0. Player B has 4 above average plays (0.5 grades) and one whiff (-2.0) for a total of 0.0.
For reference a neutral grade would be if the DL doesn't cede ground but still holds his gap, a 0.5 grade is likely the OL getting the DL out of his gap and a -2.0 would be the OL whiffing completely on a sack (see article).
So getting back to the example, depending on where the neutral/slightly positive plays were run, they could've gone for little to no yardage, while the -2.0 grade is likely a drive killer.
PFF seems to "reward" guys that are "consistent"; i.e. good for 57 plays even if the other 3 plays were awful. Sy and others (correct me if I'm wrong), give a lot more weight to avoiding the awful plays even if that means the player was only 'good' on 50 plays and then mediocre/below average on 10 plays.

I have to say though that the ability for people to rewatch these games should earn respect on its own!
Solder is on a new team lined up next to a Rookie
Hernandez is a rookie from a low level school so he has to adjust to the NFL’s speed.
Greco is going to have to play a position he’s scarcely played.
Halapio was always a journeyman
Omameh was never a stud and has generally only started because of lack of talent
And Flowers sucks.

Omameh and Flowers are also playing new positions.
Well then, maybe we should move Flowers back to LT, and move Solder to RT.....I think Solder can do it....
Omameh, undrafted, has bounced from practice squad to starting lineups, mainly out of desperation, and yet got big bucks from DG.....has played both G positions....
Moved a failure to the other side, and signed another "Jerry" for way more money.....yup, the line is fixed.....
i. e. Inhave heard it expressed that a prerequisite for Mara s hiring of a GM was a commitment to Eli going forward.
Is this fact or fiction? It kind of makes a difference in how the draft decision would be viewed

It's a logical assertion being made, but not one I'd expect Mara to confirm.
In the case of Eli, it does make sense. What makes more sense is DG walked in the door and said Eli's my guy, and Mara hopped onboard.
