NFT: The sorry state of NY Sports

giants62 : 10/7/2018 8:52 pm
Not counting soccer, we have 9 professional sports teams in NYC. In terms of current success and the near future possibility of success, how would you rank them? Number 1 is easy. 2 less so. 3-9 almost a random toss up, with the possibility that the Knicks, almost inconceivably holding down that third spot. I'll give it a try.

1. Yanks 2. Devils 3. Knicks 4. Mets 5. Giants 6. Jets 7. Islanders 8. Rangers 9. Nets.
I actually think..
DC Gmen Fan : 10/7/2018 8:53 pm : link
I'd flip the Giants and Jets and Rangers and Islanders
Move the Mets back one spot
and what amazes me about most of these teams
GmeninPSL : 10/7/2018 9:10 pm : link
is the TOTAL LACK of head coaching and managerial experience on the professional level that exists among these franchises in the number one sports market in America.
It’s sad.

Both Boston and Philadelphia are better sports cities right now. Lowly times, indeed.
I don't know who this guy
B in ALB : 10/7/2018 9:39 pm : link
is coaching the Rangers. He was at Boston University or something? They're fuckin terrible.

I think he's doing fine. It's just that the team lacks talent.
It is pretty scary that as a Giants, Rangers, and Knicks fan,

The Knicks may be the most successful of the bunch this year...and that's not saying much.

Yeah. They look great. Nice 8-5 loss today. Fuckin Charlestown Chiefs over there.
At least the Rangers and Knicks have made what seems to be

a total commitment to a rebuild. New coach who’s supposed to be good developing players, stopped overpaying for veteran FAs

Giants are in a weird spot. Is the arrow pointing up or down?
We always have the Knicks

The Cleveland Browns of the NBA. Our city turns its lonely eyes to you
You have the Giants rated too high.
Giant John : 10/7/2018 10:03 pm : link
They deserve the Nets position. You are what your record is. I said on this forum that I’d believe the Giants are a better team when I saw it on the field. That’s still my position and I hold no high hopes. Who they play next weekend? Yea that team. The one that is going to be desperate for a win. Good luck with that. Go ahead Giants prove me wrong.
The one saving grace about the Knicks is that
Bobby Humphrey's Earpad : 10/7/2018 10:04 pm : link
If they luck out and are even the 7 or 8 seed in the playoffs, the city will go ballistic. The Knicks are the unifier.

Netflix.

We can adopt the Browns for this season

Again, with the exception of the Yanks, who have somehow managed to avoid it, the thing that most of NY's sorry ass teams have in common is a second or third generation numskull running, or better put, ruining the show. Jeff Wilpon...Charles Dolan...the younger Mara etc. Not exactly forward thinking people on either the business or sports side of things.

Devils aren't NY sports

Sabres and bills have more of a claim than Newark.

Your list is fine but I'd probably swap rangers and islanders. Reason being the rangers will spend once they get a franchise player or two through the draft to build around. I actually think they have a good plan in place here -- next 2-3 years will be awful but should build something from there. Of course Dolan could always interfere though
Boston is on some kind of run.
Jim in Hoboken : 10/8/2018 10:42 pm : link
Fuck them.

The Devils are clearly part of the NYC metro area sports scene, which is obviously what this thread is about.

Smart run organizations that haven’t missed on many draft picks. Just look at Ainge trading down for Tatum, looks like a genius.
other than the Yanks, it's a low point all right.
Del Shofner : 10/8/2018 11:31 pm : link
That's OK. I've been there before. I remember when the Knicks drafting Howard Komives out of Bowling Green was a big deal. And the Giants in the mid to late '60s - forget it.

I agree with the comment about family members getting in the way, though. One good thing about Hal is that he just imposed a luxury tax budget and then got out of the way, so far as I can tell.
Buffalo teams
djm : 10/8/2018 11:48 pm : link
Are in no way shape or form related to ny sports. The devils most definitely are part of ny sports. And I hate the devils.

Buffalo? The fuck dude. NY state? Sure. NYC? Not by any stretch.
Honestly,
Mike in Long Beach : 10/8/2018 11:53 pm : link
After the Yankees and the Devils, there's nothing discernible separating 3 from 9.

You're right, it really is a sorry state.

The thread title couldn't be more clear - NY sports.

Buffalo last I checked is in NY. The devils play in the shithole that is Newark and are called New Jersey. Most of their fans come from central and south jersey - the ones that didn't become flyers fans anyway.
