How the hell was there not even a measurement

Leg of Theismann : 10/8/2018 2:30 am
after the 3rd and 1 run by McCaffrey? This is quite literally keeping me up at night. Obviously there should have also been a review, but I mean there is ALWAYS a measurement when it is that close. ALWAYS.

It's mind-boggling that not only was he clearly short of the first down (as could be seen by every single human being with eyes watching the game in real-time besides the refs), not only was the spot not reviewed, but that they just spotted the ball and looked at it and were like "Yeah whatever FIRST DOWN!"

Sometimes I really do get the impression from these refs that they don't really see their jobs as being that big of a deal. I think it was Jenkins last week who said he asked an official how they missed a call and the official said "it's not like this is the Super Bowl" or something like that. And I guess it makes sense considering this is not their full time job, and these guys rarely face any actual consequences besides just general public anger at them. Have there been instances of Refs being fired for completely blown calls? If so I don't think I've ever heard of one.
I don't know

But question, with a measurement wouldn't they still have gotten the chance to kick it from the same spot

Only scenario that would have made a difference would have been if he had been ruled short. In that case it would have been a more rushed process, but probably still time to get it off

Yes, it would have necessitated the kick on 4th down.
in their minds

the Panthers should be beating the Giants. So they subconsciously legislate in their favor
That was a once in a lifetime kick

Doing it under rushed conditions with a running, expiring clock would not necessarily have led to the same outcome. I feel like people look at it like it was a gummies chip shot so we would have ended up losing anyway.

Anyone have video at the end of the 3rd and 1? I can’t find it anywhere.
Only thing I can think of is

They didn't want to delay the game because a measurement. Whatever the reason, it was the wrong decision.

I agree. But, chances are they still would have at least had a shot, as their FG unit would have been on the field ready to snap the ball when it was spotted. It's not like they would first be scrambling on the field.
And, there would have been more than the 10 seconds
Matt M. : 10/8/2018 8:50 am : link
How much more, I'm not sure.
after a measurement

the clock is stopped and no they are lined up with a full play clock so don’t understand this rushed kick narrative.

that said, it’s not nearly as bad or silly a take as the newton 4th down spike.
Unless the kick..
FatMan in Charlotte : 10/8/2018 10:57 am : link
team was on the field, a measurement in the last two minutes is a 10 second runoff and the clock starts running as soon as the whistle blows.

The play clock at that point is irrelevant since a delay of game isn't possible.
sure fmic

but it’s also as of when mccaffrey was down. so there would have been time to get the call and get kick unit in as there would be about 15 seconds and the 30 -45 seconds to measure to be ready..
and i get

having to run on the field may be less controlled but it would have been utter chaos if mccaffrey was called short. they would probably been fairly ready to sprint in after the measure is my point.
and i will add fm

that this short of the 2002 playoff game with a terrible non call on pi that officiating impacted the outcome of this game absolutely. i thought the personal fouls that kept drives going for carolina killed the giants d.

McCaffrey’s forward momentum was stopped while he was upright with the ball positioned slightly in front of his body, and the location of the ball was very close to the “yellow marker” thing, which, for whatever reason was extra wide on the screen, so it wasn’t patently clear that he didn’t make it (some have said a yard short, but it was really inches). A measurement was definitely in order.
There were 11 seconds on the clock at that point. After the spike they tried another sideline pass for better FG field position and it was incomplete, leaving 6 sec for the kick. I think most say it takes about 12 seconds to get the kicking team on the field for a totally rushed kick, so chances of a 63-yarder under the 4th down scenerio were maybe impossible.
The Giants were out of timeouts so they couldn’t challenge. The remaining question is whether a booth review for a spot is within the 2-minute set of parameters.
i wonder if booger was getting revenge

mccaffrey went down with 25 seconds left. they burned 15 seconds running the spike which the measurement would have negated.

Yup. Forgot those 15 sec. Makes the 10 sec runoff more of a factor. I wonder if there is a runoff if the defense requests the measurement?

Lack of time outs didn't matter in terms of a reply. Only the booth can call for a replay in the last 2 minutes.
