Olivier Vernon

robbieballs2003 : 10/8/2018 10:30 am
It is funny seeing all the negative comments he gets because he "is always hurt". Most of these comments are probably coming from people who have no idea what they are talking about. Yes, he has been hurt but who is anybody to question his heart? It is bullshit imo.

Since Vernon came here in 2016 he has played an insane amount of snaps. In 2016 he played with a shattered hand and never missed a game. In 2017, he missed 4 games. In 2018, he has suffered a high ankle sprain that takes months to recover from. But lets continue to throw the guy to the wolves that has fought his ass off for us. Classy.

In 2016 he played 1040 total snaps. That was number 1 among all DL. The next closest was Buckner at 1005 and then Suh at 973 and then the list goes down from there.

In 2017 he played 701 total snaps. He missed 4 games and was also hurt sometime in the middle of week 4. So that is about 4.5 games. So if you look at his per game number of snaps he was about 61 snaps per game. The number of 701 snaps was still good enough for 35th among all DL across the NFL. Think about that, he was 35th overall while missing approximately a month of the season. JPP finished number 2 overall with 1011. If you prorate Vernon over that time with the pace he was at he would have finished with 975 snaps which would have been good for 4th overall in the NFL among DL.

So, this guy was playing damn near every snap without a rotation like most teams use, has gutted out a shattered hand, has been a good teammate, and a lot of people feel the need to bury him for suffering a few injuries playing for the team you root for?

Sorry, I think that is extremely distasteful. How about having our old GM get some DL depth in here so he wasn't abused?

It sucks that Vernon is banged up but there is no way I would ever question another player's heart or balls for not playing a couple of games especially with a high ankle sprain.
I don't question his heart. I get he is legit injured.

I am frustrated we gave him a huge contract and he is playing either hurt with diminished effectiveness or missing games entirely. We need a legit pass rusher and he is being paid as an elite pass rusher. But he has to be on the field and effective to validate the contract. When was the last time he took over a game?
No doubt.

There is a difference between injury prone and soft. You can't just fight through certain things. You think Vernon wants to be injury prone? I know I don't, but some things are out of your control.

I assure you Vernon wants to be out there and is more frustrated than any fan.
Well said

Frustration takes over rational thought though. Overall it’s pretty funny to see fans being highly critical of NFL players, as if they want to be hobbled or losing.

Gets crapped on here for him kneeling more than him being injured. Fans just hide the real reason they are upset with him by saying he's soft etc.
The most important ability in the NFL is availability.

He has shown that the Giants cannot depend on him to get on the field. He is stealing at this point.

Yes, he was very dependable for the Dolphins. We ain't the Dolphins.

?
I was just gonna post the same thing
redbeard : 10/8/2018 10:54 am : link
These mouth breathers calling him a china doll, etc are fucking insufferable

He played a full 16 games his first year and only missed 4 games last year. He could still come back and potentially play the majority of the games this year as well. I don’t know where this narrative came from but it’s freaking obnoxious

No I could care less if he kneels. I am tired of our over paid defensive end not playing due to injuries what seems like every year.
Questioning his heart isn't fair
Go Terps : 10/8/2018 11:04 am : link
Questioning the wisdom of paying him is another matter entirely.
I don’t question injuries.

Pretty much his entire time here he has been hampered by one injury or another. It's not a comment on his character. Some players are just unlucky with injuries their entire career.

Then you don't fit the description of the fans I was talking about.
Actually Redbeard, I was ecstatic when we signed him.
Big Blue '56 : 10/8/2018 11:17 am : link
I didn’t and won’t question his contract as, that’s the market as obscene as that is. I also didn’t question the contract because he was only 25, just a few years removed from draft age, yet completely polished.

That said, missing “ only 4 games last year” is VERY misleading. He played at far less efficiency because of his injury status and that didn’t help all that much. So yes, technically he played 12 games, but that is indicative of very little aside from heart.

I treated countless HAS through the years and every patient heals at their own rate, depending of course on the degree of severity. I have no expectations about OV, but I have very little confidence that he’ll be back at anywhere near peak efficiency, at least without re-tweaking the area. I don’t expect much from him this year, at least in viewing this from afar
It's business.
Pepe LePugh : 10/8/2018 11:25 am : link
Missed 9 of last 21 games. Racked up 15 sacks in the 28 games he was on the field. That doesn't add up to an $85 million deal. May need to cut bait after the season. But that's business. No need to dump on a guy who is giving all he's got.
He's useless if...
silverfox : 10/8/2018 11:38 am : link
...he's not playing. It's not rocket science.

He’s on the all overpaid team along with Solder and unfortunately, Eli. People think he is the answer to our anemic pass rush but he didn’t’t provide much when healthy. Could we use him? Sure, but you can’t help me if you’re not on the field.
All fans get frustrated when
TMS : 10/8/2018 11:49 am : link
their team is losing. High end and expensive talent like ELI and Vernon take a lot of heat when things are not going well. Just as they get a lot of credit when they do. A two or three game winning streak will soften the mood here. Lets hope we get it after the Bye week or before. Remember this is a top to bottom rebuilt team.

For this guy to be truly effective, he has to be healthy.....something we have hardly seen....

When he was with Miami? I honestly can't remember him "taking over" a game a la [insert name of preferred elite defender].

All that said, I like him, especially his work against the run. Looking forward to him getting healthy and showing us what he can do from the OLB spot.
That should have read...

"...taking over a game as a Giant.."
Can't knock him for legitimate injury ..
Bluesbreaker : 10/8/2018 3:02 pm : link
He does tend to get nicked up quite a bit I don't question his toughness at all .
We have yet too see him in a 3-4 as a Giant I am not sure
what he played in Miami assume a 3-4 as well . My Nephew is
a huge Marino Phins fan He is a Penn St. Grad environmental Eng for BAE Good smart Kid anyways he told me that we would be disappointing in Vernon I don't recall what his reason was but there that .
Hopefully he will be in the lineup next week .
Can we expect him Thurs. ? He has practiced but not full I guess .

It's not like he's Osi or Strahan
VinegarPeppers : 10/8/2018 4:32 pm : link
Not even close. He's a good DE not a great DE. At OLB, who knows?
This needs to be said again

Our cap has $32M allocated towards Vernon and JPP this year.
