Optimism Thread

Yes I know we are 1-4 coming a 3-13 season. Yes I know we've had one winning season in the last five years and have essentially been eliminated by Thanksgiving three of the last five seasons. But we are a missed 63 yard field goal away from a very different mood on this board.

The schedule gets easier from here. We've probably played the three toughest games of our schedule with the Jaguars, Saints, and Panthers. If the Redskins lose tonight (and they should since they're playing the Saints in the dome in primetime) then we are only 1.5 games out of first place with 11 games to play including 5 division games. A Redskins' loss will also mean that there are only two games left on our schedule against a team that currently has a winning record. Both those games are at home against the 3-1 Bears Week 13 and 3-2 Titans Week 15.

I don't think we are close to being Super Bowl contenders. But I also don't think we are close to a top-5 pick as some people on this board suggest. We are somewhere in the middle as many of the teams in the NFL are. I expected us to go 8-8 this season, and I still don't think that is out of the realm of possibility. I also don't think it's inconceivable that 8-8 wins the NFC East given the tough schedule our division faces and the general mediocrity of all the teams. The rest of the division still hasn't played the Saints and Jaguars, and the Redskins and Eagles haven't played the Panthers yet.

With so many meaningless December games over the last 5 years, all I want this year is for the Giants to be playing meaningful games after Thanksgiving. Win Thursday, and we will be moving in the right direction towards that goal. Win Thursday, and all of a sudden we will be tied with the defending Super Bowl champions and unanimous preseason favorites to win the NFC East, and we will own the head-to-head tiebreaker.

I'm not ready to give up on this season yet. I hope all of you that are going to the game Thursday haven't either. If you are going to the game, please be loud and bring energy. This game is huge and the team needs to feed off your energy! Go Giants!
Optimism for me

Is the team taming steps towards becoming a team that understands how to win, which is a process. I saw some of that yesterday. In fact even with games that totally seemed like a shit show if the team can stay focused on learning instead of getting too down they can still progress. Progression isn't always accomplished through winning.
I'm proud of the team performance yesterday

they played hard, took chances, weren't afraid to make mistakes, didn't fold when things didn't go their way.

Not the result I wanted but at least it was entertaining football not like majority of the games over this stretch of loosing.
Proud as well

Though my father and I said repeatedly. Handoff to Barkley and kill 40 seconds at the 16.. Dont care if we he gained zero. I knew we lost once we scored. I did not want the game in the refs hands, it was, and they forced our loss (the spot).

Team entertained us, and that is all we can ask for. Go Big Blue
But you don't win games by trying harder, you win games by

eliminating mistakes......something we just can't seem to avoid....
Definetely encouraged

by this performance. How could you not be? As for the season a play or 2 each game could have resulted in a few more wins. Lets see how they do Thursday against a not so great Eagle team. A win could go a long way to salvaging this season.
Giants played perfect yesterday

But kicker made the kick..shit happens

Giants may be there now.
One of the main positives this season has been Rosas

He has taken a huge step forward and is one of the leagues best young kickers. I am glad that the Giants didn’t sign Dan Bailey even though I was a huge advocate for doing so at the time.

He has done well but that KO OB was a momentum killer at a crucial time, gotta eliminate that, but it’s what to expect out of giants ST’s.
Team is competing and has better leadership

but 1-4 is still 1-4. I can't fathom anything close to 8-8 at this point, but I'm happy to be proven wrong. I see 5-11. Glad the rookies are playing so well - we'll need a couple more strong draft classes.

They played, hard, they were tough, they made enough plays to win...but not perfectly. Too many penalties (even aside from bogus calls), e.g.,offsides on Panthers punt. Eli missed a couple throws, Odell letting punt hit his leg. But agree it was encouraging and I still think they can have a season.

Betcher is an A +.

Front 3 on D. An Excellent building block.

Some additional pieces on DD... if it's not clear the perfect 11 there, it's a solid start.

Shurmer is creative, smart and professional. He will step down a touch (from his occasional play design high horse)... when it's called for, to adjust for the pieces he was given... and situations he faces...and use the fancy shit when THATs called for... as well. Because it's worth it. And he's worth it. Hugs and hand holds and cardigan sweaters, cigs and coffee.

Also..the Knicks are trending up?!?

We played the 2015 NFC Champions yesterday, will play the 2017 NFC Champions this week, and will play the 2016 NFC Champions next week. The last 3 NFC Champs all lined up, and I know teams change a lot from year to year but a large portion (coaches and players) of all three teams is the same as when they won their respective titles. Got our work cut out for us.
Offense has improved significantly...

I believe lessons can and have been learned and am hoping to see more high-scoring games. Can't wait for some revenge on Dallas.
