but I'm a little surprised to see Kraftwerk in there. Interesting band with some great musicians, but a little obscure. And how many albums did Chaka Khan make with Rufus, 2? The first one is fantastic.
But that conversation/argument is pretty moot. Take a look at some of the inductees over the years and this really is not the rock and roll Hall of Fame. It’s the music Hall of Fame. That’s just the reality of it.
stop imposing your definition of rock and roll on artists like John Prine, or for that matter any of the artists nominated
Was a time when almost any genre of artist fit into the understanding of what rock and roll music was
It's a vast canopy that covers any and all music that was created by and for young people.
Those young people have stumbled into the higher demographics and a good percentage have refused to let go of their first love and common bond, rock and roll.
New types of music have emerged since those days but the original definition still applies with a few modifiers (mostly composed of older folks still loving or making the music.)
But rock and roll is itself, a composite of genres that have kept having inter-genre sex thus spawning new mutant babies.
A guy with an acoustic guitar and a gift for songwriting is as qualified for inclusion and a full-blown ear-splitting band.
It's a sin and a gross misunderstanding to have such a narrow-minded definition of what rock and roll is and should be.
As far as hip-hop and pop goes, are you going to be the one that says that group of people shouldn't be represented when the zeitgeist says otherwise.
Rock and roll has to be an ever-changing, ever-expanding entity or it will wither and die - never put qualifiers on art - you can have a healthy dislike for this genre or that sub-genre, but everything under that vast canopy has to be included in the broad definition of an ever-evolved art-form.
Sorry for the grammatical errors, etc. Driving and composing written Â
...the Zombies weren't already in???
Their Classic British Invasion hits "She's Not There", "Tell Her No" and "Time of the Season" were as good as anything of that era. Probably better!
Wow... very under-rated group. It's time for the R&R HOF to rectify their decades-long mistake.
and starting to acknowledge influential bands
Devo
and The Cure should both be in the Hall
I still can't believe Pixies haven't even been nominated
I love John Prine, have seen him live multiple times, but NEVER considered his music rock and roll...

aren't we past the whole "this rock 'n roll HOF nominee isn't a rock band/musician" complaint?
this has been going on since the inception. It would be more appropriately named the music hall of fame, but it's not.
I've been there. The Rock & Roll HOF feels like an old folks home for music.

Just one guy. They could rename the place 'Bands Jann Wenner Likes'.
I love John Prine, have seen him live multiple times, but NEVER considered his music rock and roll...
Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, etc, are in, going back decades. Not sure of your point.
I'd definitely cast a vote for Radiohead, The Cure and Todd Rundgren.

You've never equated Janet Jackson with R+R, but somehow the Cure fit that bill??
Oooooookayyyy..
Is there a list of criteria?
Is there a list of voters?

Stevie Nicks should be part of the 2019 class, in my opinion.

I don't know about that, Springsteen and Warren Zevon were pretty close friends.

I agree completely!!!

The Grammys are a fucking joke. If you're going to base hall nominees on Grammy nominations you are going to miss a lot of great music.
Let's put aside who isn't on this list.
There are more than several egregious non-nominee artists - Warren notwithstanding.
That said, The Zombies are one of the most under-appreciated bands in rock and roll history.
Their 1968 release "Odessey and Oracle" is nothing short of a miracle.
If nothing else this, their 4th nomination, should encourage those who have overlooked this masterpiece of pure pop perfection to give it a listen.
Preferably with headphones.
There's nothing else quite like it.
And John Prine is a national treasure.
Both deserve to be reconsidered by those who claim to love rock and roll.
All of that said, the Hall itself is a sham of a joke of a sham thanks for Yawn Wenner's influence on the choices.
The fact that the Hall is located in Cleveland is all you have to know to suspect fishy business.
Do yourself a favor and check out "Odessey and Oracle" starting with what those who have sampled it say on, say Amazon
Stepping off of soapbox.
Feeling lightheaded.

Agree about Zevon too.
That said, I couldn't really care less who is in or out of this Hall of Fame.

Rock & Roll than a bunch of suits collectively deciding whether or not someone can be included in their exclusive club.

Yup. Just finished reading the Wenner biography, “Sticky Fingers”. Pretty good book for rock n roll and or Rolling Stone fans.
