OT Brian Mihalik will be promoted from the practice squad after Ereck Flowers' situation is resolved this afternoon, per source. Mihalik, who made two starts last season for the Lions, will become the swing tackle behind Nate Solder and Chad Wheeler.
I cannot help but laugh at how bad the group of OTs is.

We have one average OT. Our starter is not very good although I like him. I think he is a better LOT than a ROT but we aren't moving Solder. Then we are picking up scraps for a swing tackle with no 4th true tackle on the roster.
PK Marshall Koehn takes his place on the PS

That is actually worse than Ereck Flowers.

I sure hope that is an anomaly...

Wheeler really develops, this is going to be a huge need in the offseason.
He's a newb

Only been playing OT for a couple years. He played DE in college and was drafted as that.

Pretty big, athletic dude. Obviously looks like he needs to add some strength, though.

It's a good thing the Giants brass pass on players based on a few bad looking plays.

I'm sure he's nothing special, but how many backup tackles are?

Si, señor. He hurt his quads, but he's expected to play.
Believe he was on the Lions when the Giants practiced

against them during preseason for a week. Also Shurmur I believe had him on the Eagles for a short time when he was there. Must have been something he liked. I'm trying to be optimistic here.

I think the right side of the line, including Omaneh may
need to be replaced, he doesn't excite me either.
IIRC, his deal was only for two years, they can get out
after this year I would think.
Strongly dislike the concept

of paying two UFA OTs (Solder and X), yuck.
Mihalik was a defensive end at Boston College
GeofromNJ : 10/9/2018 11:55 am : link
and was drafted by the Eagles late to play defense but was cut in 2015. Was converted to offense by the Lions and played with both Detroit and Pittsburgh. Shurmur was Philly OC when they drafted Mihalik and says that he's still learning how to play the line. He loves his athleticism at 6'9" and 315 lbs.

IMO, there's no difference (cap/cost) between a UFA from another team and resigning someone you drafted. Had Flowers magically panned out this year, we have to pay a lot to keep him, or replace him, so we'd be paying a lot for the two tackles.

The part where we've been missing out is quality production from the cost controlled contracts of first contract players.

They can find a RT in the draft, signed two UFA's
last offseason. Personally I am not excited by Omanheh
at this point, he seems to get pushed around a lot.
Who knows how the Giants will feel about him at the end
of the year?

Understood, it's shellshock from the Solder contract for me. grin
Whatever

this is what bad teams need to do - cycle through as many bodies as possible to see if any can stick. You are going to see a lot of these guys check in and check out.

Hopefully, they can find some players. The scouting and self-scouting has been really bad.
seriously..Will Beatty?
Gordo : 10/9/2018 12:31 pm : link
why the hell not? he would be markedly better as a swing tackle than anything else that's out there.. it must be his price
That's a total shame ...

That Butt tackle ...

Kind of reminds me of Mark Sanchez' getting "butt tackled", by his own lineman (Brandon Moore) remember ?

Pretty sure they had Beatty come in before the season started. Must not have liked what they saw.
It was the Pats Vince Wilfork ...

Who "forklifted" Moore on top of Sanchez.
I think we need to just accept

That the line is not getting fixed until the offseason. Wringing our hands about it is not going to do any good nor spark an original discussion. The line is what it is at this point: a slight improvement over last year.
The funny part is that..
Giants_West : 10/9/2018 3:34 pm : link
The tackles haven't been nearly the problem that the interior line has been. The lack of any sort of consistent push in the run game or pocket for eli to step up into in the pass game has been much more of a hindrance to our offensive production than the occasional free rusher on the edge.

This is how I see it as well. The interior line has not shown to be physical enough in the run game and not getting that push. Running room has been hard to come by. Barkley has had to cut outside and create his large gains on his own. Greco and Omameh for the most part aren't getting it done in the run game. This is an extremely important week to be able to run the ball. I'm hoping this is the week they finally get some push. Probably moreso because it will be raining, but it will be tough sledding against this Run D, as well.

You might be right, but I'm not sure. Will have to rewatch the games to see why this is. I'm pretty sure the Giants really struggled at OT early (JAX) and changed schemes to give more help to the OT. I think that has continued, but again, I'm going to have to check.

Right now I know that the interior OL has really struggled to create running lanes, with few exceptions.
Fixes to OL will take...

at least two more drafts in my opinion.
