Last week they played better overall but they cannot run block and the pass protection is certainly suspect as well. Teams will exploit this all year long. Just average blocking and this offense could be good. Don’t see how we’re going to get that.
have like a long history of losing? Like his only NFL job was for the Browns the last 2 years or something like that?
Hal Hunter is a longtime NFL veteran OL coach. I wasn't happy to hear when he was hired, but a new HC sometimes doesn't have a full staff that is available and willing so they have to rely on who is available to round out the staff. Often, those that are available are for a reason in that they aren't in demand. Hal had been out of football last year. Before that I think he was the Colts OL coach, Chargers OL coach, and the Browns OL coach.
We need to continue to do so. It'll get better even though it doesn't seem like it.
The one complaint I have is it seems like every time we wqnt to run we load up the box. Why? There are times to do so and times not to. I think Barkley would be way more effective with a five man line with the defense spread out. Give him lanes to run. We need to mix it up.

Agree absolutely. When we don't win the double-teams why would we want to invite more defenders into the box? Running from the spread seems like something we should be trying more, especially against teams with large defenders who are difficult to move.
Carolina has a big front four and very rangy talented LBers behind them. It was going to be a challenge to run against them. I like how we were willing to try, but I'd have preferred we get the defense spread out more and do more to get some space for Barkley. Jet sweep seems like it would get those LB moving out. Any other misdirection seems like a good idea.
The TD (OBJ to SB) was an example of how to use weapons on offense to misdirect the defense. Need more of that, imo.
these guys suck. They can't get any push with a double team! Greco gets a bit of a pass because he's filling in for Halapio but his next stop is out of football. If Omemah was any good, the Jags, who live and die by the run, would have kept him.
For the past two pre-seasons I had a few mini arguments with a few people about our OL. I was told it is just pre-season and it is a vanilla offense, blah blah.
My point was that I was watching the OL get pushed backwards on every play by the guy lined up in front of them. My concern was that this is not a scheme or play calling issue... it is a physical domination problem where our guys are on the losing end too often.
In the second run, if Omameh focuses on the DL, Kuechly shoots the gap and makes the play. I don't think he can just double team or that Baldy can know that a double team is what the play called for. On the third run, it looks like Omameh's job was to seal off the DL for a run inside, which SB had, but instead he chose to bounce it outside. I think that's on SB not Omameh.
The sheer quality of play in this league or lackthereof is staggering. Guys can't tackle, they can't block, they can't make basic reads...
The athletes are getting better but the basics are getting worse.
Just so many stupid things happening on the field now.
The other guy in front of him gets paid to win too!

seriously though, we have some guys really lacking quickness and are beat before they can even use technique.

He tripped over the guy on the ground. I wouldn’t call it a pancake
I felt Fluker was a good addition last year. He should have been brought back for at least 2 years. He is way better than Omameh.

Omameh was never a good run blocking guard. The Jags averaged their lowest productivity on the ground to his side.
He's just big -- and that got confused with powerful on this site. There are a few good write-ups on the web about how bad of a run blocker he is.
