Did Giants cut Webb to avoid QB controversy ?

Elite Mobster #32 : 10/12/2018 1:42 am
Was not totally sold on Davis Webb but it's been a slow process to replace Eli. Building a franchise after Eli will take a few years of high picks.

General Manager 101 *****

The Giants will draft a QB this year. At 1-5 record we would asking for Webb by now.
Davis Webb through seniority was close to receiving game playing time during the season. There will be no QB controversy and there is no chance or possibility of seeing a different QB this season even if Eli continues to lose or overthrow targets when their open.

Management felt Webb was not the franchise QB of the future made a decision to give this entire season to Eli clearly , Make or Break. They decided to stock pile draft picks for a 2 year plan.
um yeah, that's it...
SHO'NUFF : 10/12/2018 1:44 am : link
you hit the nail right on the head with that one.
Haha..
darren in pdx : 10/12/2018 1:48 am : link
Come on.
Yeah because Webb showed so much in that game last season
montanagiant : 10/12/2018 2:14 am : link
That he started.

Oh wait......
He is on the Jets practice squad, I believe
Vanzetti : 10/12/2018 2:33 am : link
So Giants can get him back if they want to. Doesn’t look like they want to
I have to
King Quis : 10/12/2018 3:30 am : link
Admit... it’s a crazy thought and I actually thought it tonight myself. I mean they let Webb go and replaced him with Alex Tanney????? I figured they knew no one would ask for Lauletta too quickly since they have him as the third QB on the roster but it was always odd how the released Webb with no rhyme or reason and how they didn’t even let him play at all the final game. As much as we give Webb crap about how he “didn’t show much” during the preseason he did show that athletically he fit this offense better than Eli and coupled with a better arm and desire to push the ball vertically I feel management didn’t want that potential hassle to deal with so the gave Eli the courtesy of removing the only real threat to relieve him this season.

Once again not saying Webb’s a world beater but surely you guys here would have to admit if he was on this roster after the early clusterfucx of a season they’d be clamoring for him to be put in.its definitely not out of the realm of possibilities.
When you consider the lengths management has gone to in order
Brown Recluse : 10/12/2018 5:57 am : link
to appease the fans and Manning thus far, and how surprising it was that they chose Tanney over Webb, its really not that far-fetched.

Thats not to say Webb would have actually fared any better or that he would have been the future, but he was obviously a popular player among the fan base during training camp and preseason and he had been hyped up all offseason by the media. The fans (and maybe even some teammates) would certainly be calling for him to start right now and it wouldve made things even uglier than they already are. He does something Manning wont do. He throws it deep. Probably too much. But thats what fans want to see.

No way to know for sure but I wouldnt put it past this organization at all to do something like that.
According to Ancient Alien theorists
Doomster : 10/12/2018 6:45 am : link
you guys are nuts!
The cut made no sense
bluepepper : 10/12/2018 7:16 am : link
Webb was certainly one of the top 3 QB's on the roster. Tanney barely got a look until the last pre-season game. Lauletta's arm is unimpressive and he struggled with accuracy plus he's a rookie from a small school.

The cut was either to avoid QB controversy if Eli struggled, purge the last remaining guy from the Eli benching incident for Mara's benefit, or to purge as many Reese guys as possible to put DG's stamp on the roster.

As far as Webb only being on a PS - how many teams are going to open a 53-man roster spot for a QB who's never played a down in the league?

Sure if they thought Webb was the second coming of Aaron Rodgers they would have kept him but in retrospect the bar for him to make the team was not be the 2nd or 3rd best QB on the roster but rather be a future franchise QB. He couldn't clear that so he was gone.

No, they cut Webb because
HomerJones45 : 10/12/2018 7:21 am : link
he sucks and will never be an NFL qb despite the fond hopes and dreams of many here
I’m all for finding more situations to indict this...
bw in dc : 10/12/2018 7:33 am : link
front office, but Webb was not a good player. We’re not talking Steve Young ready to take the baton from Montana. He exposed in great detail who he is - at best a long shot project with a good arm who had decision making anxiety that was going to take a ton of time to mold...if that ever worked at all.

They cut Webb
LakeGeorgeGiant : 10/12/2018 7:34 am : link
because they liked the other QBs more. The fact that he was awful likely played a role there.
Let's get one thing straight...
BamaBlue : 10/12/2018 7:36 am : link
Tanney is not BETTER than Webb; he's "less bad."
Webb
giantfan2000 : 10/12/2018 8:39 am : link
Webb played like 6 quarters of football in preseason
how can you actually evaluate how he would be doing now if he was on the team

in Webb's one preseason start
Giants were able to have a vertical passing game and actually scored 30 points

and the fact is if Webb WAS on the team now
there would be a large loud vocal part of fanbase and media to let Webb play and see what he could do ?
No.
AcidTest : 10/12/2018 8:43 am : link
Remember that Webb passed through waivers. Nobody even wanted him on their 53, even though he was a third round pick from 2017. The Jets did agree to pay his entire 2018 salary to join their PS, but even that isn't much.
He s not the first to suggest it

It has nothing to do with Webbs ability.
while the theory is a stretch
UESBLUE : 10/12/2018 9:06 am : link
at best, why on earth does a team with an aging immobile QB not have a proven backup? Its incomprehensible.

arniefez : 10/12/2018 9:08 am : link
a 31 year old back up who has played 1 NFL game is very odd with a 37 year old QB. They literally made sure there is no other option but Eli.

The dumbasses on this site.
No. They thought Webb had very little upside,
NoPeanutz : 10/12/2018 9:37 am : link
and he was also the previous GM's pick. This GM and Coach had their own QB project, and there is only room in the nest for one chick.
Fwiw, Webb was much more suck in the game against the Browns than he was good against the Lions.
I thinjk you're on to something...
BillKo : 10/12/2018 9:40 am : link
....and no one signed him to the 53 to avoid any controversies elsewhere.

You just can't have that on an NFL team these days.
All I know
Josh in the City : 10/12/2018 10:07 am : link
is that the beat reporters consistently said that Webb was the best QB throughout training camp (which is why they were all shocked at how poorly he played in the 1st preseason game). Maybe he wasn't the right fit for THIS offense (though this offense sucks so who cares) but there's no denying he has talent and works hard.
I'm just going to wait for Fat Man's post
Anakim : 10/12/2018 10:08 am : link
Don't mind me.
I don't think Webb was the next Russell Wilson either
jcn56 : 10/12/2018 10:12 am : link
but we cut him and kept Alex Tanney.

I doubt it was over QB controversy, I really think it was because he blabbed about the details of the McAdoo/Eli benching situation during the preseason.
Webb sucks.

Get over it.
Davis Webb

Webb is on the short list for the worst quarterback I've ever seen in 30 years of following the game. He's not an NFL player.
There's certainly no shortage of absolutes with some,

That's going a bit overboard.

But what was Tanney in comparison? Why bother keeping him?

For the record, I expected little from this season, and didn't want to keep 3 QBs at all. The reasoning behind Tanney was to step in for a game or two if Eli went down, but what made anyone think Tanney would be capable of anything out there?
Kyle Lauetta
cjac : 10/12/2018 10:49 am : link
is better than Webb

Where is Webb anyway? if he was any good wouldnt he be somewhere?
The point is the managment strategy was to avoid any controversy
Elite Mobster #32 : 10/12/2018 2:01 pm : link
No Webb chants after an interception!

The Giants will draft a QB after this season.
They may need one more high draft to obtain that draft status.
If Eli cant make them competitive this year, we will go to draft high and get more highly regarded players. I very with Barkley and Odell who was chosen high. That's the strategy!
I'm quite upset that Fat Man hasn't chimed in

Webb sucks, he is not an NFL QB. Just another 3rd round failure.

This is ridiculous.

Everyone needs to remember that we are talking about Eli Manning, a hero to us all. This is a painful thing to watch. I think he needs to play out the string, he's earned it and whole else is going to start, Tanney?
Webb was a draft pick of the previous regime
JonC : 10/12/2018 3:01 pm : link
and deemed to not fit, thus, he was collateral damage.
I think that they could only keep 3 QBs
Bill L : 10/12/2018 3:05 pm : link
and felt that they could only nurture one. They chose the one they drafted. The reserved the 3rd spot for someone who they felt was experienced enough to step in if Eli got injured (assuming that the team was doing as well as they expected and would need to prioritize winning over gaining experience).

It's pretty much Occam's Razor and no need to put tinfoil on your head.

This will be Raanan's take next week and once again he will claim "an unnamed NFL exec" told him this
It's pretty simple actually. Think Occam's Razor.
Strahan91 : 10/12/2018 3:57 pm : link
It's nearly impossible to develop two QB's at the same time given the lack of practice time and reps to go around, let alone attention. They felt Lauletta has more upside and has a better shot at being an NFL QB. So did many draft experts as well so it's not hard to believe.
