This is my biggest concern with the Gettleman/Shurmur hire. These moves coupled with the amount of money spent represented a ‘win now’ approach. The Giants have spent a ton of money & you can’t tell me this was a rebuilding year.
So, it’s likely a QB will be drafted first. My problem is this- it’s very possible Gettleman will either be fired or retire, the man is 68 years old. Does the new GM get saddled with Shurmur, what if they don’t like the QB? It’s a losing approach. Just look at recent history:
-Coughlin/Reese on different schedules
-Coughlin/McAdoo on different schedules
-Coughlin & the majority of his staff were on different schedules
I think it is very dangerous to keep this GM/HC to draft the next QB.
Going forward, I’d much rather have a young GM & HC working together and selecting the next QB. This team is 1-5 with a ton of money spent, the offseason plan has not worked.

I liked the Gettleman hire, but many here wanted a totally new look, much along the lines of what you suggest.
Right now it s difficult to not feel they were correct. But maybe things get better.

He should absolutely be fired after this season then. I’m so tired of the “win or else” mentality. Bring in a cohesive group and build something sustainable.

Im not so sure I agree. We will finish with a top 5 pick. I can see us getting a qb in rd 1 then the brass giving Shurmur time to work with that qb. Why draft a rookie qb start him then fire the coach after the qbs first year? That is a recipe for disaster IMO that will set that young qb back 2-3 years.
This thing is broken. Badly broken. Not 'bench Eli and we're good' broken. Not 'trade OBJ and we're all set' broken. None of the pinpoint, interim fixes that are addressed without a long term strategy in place that builds a team that can work together are going to work.
The Giants keep changing one thing here, one thing there - on a complex system that is completely dysfunctional. It's not going to work.
So while I haven't been thrilled with Shurmur, I don't see how relieving him alone will improve anything.
If they were indeed brought in for that reason why are they all of a sudden allowed to abandon that plan?
Let me guess, Mara gave them his blessing to move on to Mara plan b?
Louis, not Theo.
I wanted Wolf. But, sadly, as soon as Mara said he was bringing in Accorsi, I knew that wasn’t happening.

I'm guessing the conspiracy theory you're implying here means they were forced somehow to retain Manning.
Otherwise - do you not believe that Gettleman sharing a common opinion on Manning's future would greatly increase his chances of getting the job?
I highly doubt someone twisted Gettleman's arm, but I don't doubt for a second that Mara had a very easy time selecting him because they were like minds on a lot of Giants topics, most importantly Eli Manning.
Unfortunately, the last thing the Giants needed was a like mind hire.
