What is to blame?... Give your percentage

Big d E 2 : 10/12/2018 10:40 am
I am and always will be a diehard Giants fan. I am so grateful for how classy our organization is (usually) and that we have been successful in the past.

I am interested to get peoples opinion of who is at fault. This is just an exercise and I am hopeful our team will get fixed in the next couple of years.

I do think our talent level is not great but I tend to think the coaches could get a lot more out of the team.

I would blame our teams performance so far as 70% coaching and 30% talent.

What would you say?

Person or set of people and that is ownership. Certainly Reese had a direct negative effect but Mara/Tisch allowed him to stay. Ultimately it was their call and so they are 100% to blame

Tom Coughlin is laughing, if they had spent the 150 million on Defense AND left him in place instead of McAdoo 16 might have ended differently!

over the middle on second and two on the first series when the Eagles had 4 safeties/linebackers bunched over the middle of the field. And to make it perfect the TE we targeted hadn't been in camp with us this year and had played only sparingly.

Top to bottom. Mara, Reese, Coughlin and Tisch.

It wasn’t just one of them it was an entire organizational failure.

John went back to the well with Gettleman and I will give him a few years to turn it around, but right now it’s not looking good.
I really don't understand the OP.

I don't see how the blame can be laid so heavily on coaching compared to the roster. Personally, I think it's pretty difficult (and silly) to judge the coaching thus far, but even if one thinks Shurmur and crew are doing a poor job, it seems clear to me that they're stuck with a flawed roster which is a bigger problem than anything the staff is doing.

Exactly..this current team is residual damage.

Going to take at least another year or two, with some prudent drafting.
I wonder what the thought process was like for Shurmur
jcn56 : 10/12/2018 11:00 am : link
I'm pretty sure Gettleman wasn't going to get a job elsewhere had we not offered it to him, purely because of his age.

Shurmur had a choice though - he could have waited it out another season in Minny, or taken this job.

Between watching film of the Giants the past couple of years, and interviewing with the FO to gather some info on where they saw the team heading with personnel, he had to have some idea what he was going to be dealing with.

Did he think that he had a good chance of being successful with this setup? Or was it him figuring this might be his last chance at a HC gig, and he'd better take it?

I blame Mara-Tisch, I think our bizarre ownership setup is akin to Generals Paullus and Varo fighting Hannibal at Cannae, one general take command one day, another the next day, back to the other next day...
70% on coaching ?
Watson : 10/12/2018 11:18 am : link
Yes, shame on the coaching staff for not having that magic wand to take a roster of 30+ new players and turn it into a juggernaut of a team.

This team consistently deteriorated over the Reese years. This wasn't going to be a quick fix. With all due respect to the OP, not sure what you expected.

John Mara. It’s not even close.

And the person laughing loudest with the last laugh?

Ben McAdoo.

This.

It's hard to overstate how awful the drafts, and most of the FA signings, were under Reese, and how damaging that is to the team. He hit on OBJ, Collins, and Snacks. Maybe Shepard. And that's about it.

On the current roster?

Because JPP is very good would be our leading sack guy now (as would Devon kennard we let go). Jenkins has flashed greatly. Engram could be good
