Would D.G. have the balls to trade OBJ?

EJJ : 10/12/2018 12:47 pm
With the new contract I don't even know if it's possible but if he found a suitor would DJ pull the trigger?
For the right compensation I think he would. If he is truly running the front office without Mara signing off on transactions. A team looking to secure a final piece of their puzzle to ensure a Super bowl might take his contract on and even over pay.
Say what you want but OBJ is unstable. He comes off as a narcissistic, me first kinda guy with serous personality issues at least that is how I perceive him as I think a lot of mature fans do.
The other side of the coin is he is a rare game changing talent obviously one of the best WRs ever to play the game, a generational talent.
We now have Barkley the next generational talent on the team who IMHO can take over a game from the RB position eclipsing OBJs game changing ability. This is only going to push OBJ to act out more, watch he will put on a behavioral show.
We all know you don't build a football team with a WR you need the lines to be stout and a QB. The rest is complementary. For the right package NYG should strongly consider moving on from Odell.
The ESPN interview was very telling IMHO the Giants brass have to be upset, they fined him. They also have to see that nothing has changed or will change for the better in the locker room.
Watching OBJ throw a tantrum and his teammates appear to quit when things looked bad isn't the team I grew up rooting for. I think most die hard Giants fans want players they can root for, guys that have character not character concerns.

He should have before handing

him that asinine contract.
We need to turn the page from Beckham..
Sean : 10/12/2018 12:48 pm : link
the thought of him with a rookie QB? Yikes!
I dont recall Obj..
Simpleman in Tx : 10/12/2018 12:53 pm : link
acting immature when things are going well with the team (Bar Carolina fiasco a couple years ago). Yes he is a diva, but a fiery competitor that only wants to win. His thirst to win and compete should be mirrored by the team! Get the team straightened out and we'll see more of 'mature' Obj.

DonQuixote : 10/12/2018 12:55 pm : link
OBJ is one of the best players in the league. If he is frustrated with the QB play and the pass protection, guess what, he's right.

You build around guys like that, you don't trade them. If Saquon gets frustrated, you want to trade him too?

Get some beef up front, start your rookie QB, and if he can't cut it, draft another one.
this could not have been posted in the OBJ

Trade thread below??

He cannot and should not be traded. Put a friggen team around him and the attitude changes! This team stinks!
I dunno
santacruzom : 10/12/2018 12:58 pm : link
Is there much historical precedent for a team building around a guy like Beckham and becoming consistently successful? I can't quite think of one.

I agree that unless he matures and changes dramatically, he won't be a net positive to a new QB. Sure, he'll catch some of those QB's passes and turn them into good plays, but that won't happen frequently enough to be meaningful over the course of several seasons.
You don’t trade OBJ
NY-Fan : 10/12/2018 1:00 pm : link
It is not an option. The focus should be how do you get him more support. Yes he has not handled things correctly but as bad as he has handled things the Giants have handled things just as bad.

You absolutely cannot say any of that with any degree of certainty. How do you know this? This fiery competitor BS wears thin after a while.. Your comment is complete conjecture and wishful thinking.

The Giants have sucked ever since he joined the team. Maybe not because of him but they have never been good. So basically he’s always been immature.
No Trade
Jim Bur(n)t : 10/12/2018 1:05 pm : link
OBJ is a competitor... We need more of those on this team.

OBJ, Saquan, Snacks & Kerry Wynn (yes, Wynn) are the only untouchables. Everyone else - Man up or get the F out.

OBJ is not the issue with this team....

the guy wants to win and does need to get the ball in his hands. Shurmur needs to figure out a way to get him more open. To me he doesn't look quite as explosive as he was before the injury either. Anyway, this offense has greater problems then OBJ and his histrionics.

Not untouchable, but I see Carter and Eli Apple as solid starters on a winning team.
He is young and frustrated .
Bluesbreaker : 10/12/2018 1:14 pm : link
But there is something going on mentally with him .
He seemed to have done everything you could ask through
his rehab to practice and his contract negotiations .
Yet I still see this immaturity in him this constant
dancing and fucking with his hair and sideline temper tantrums .
To his defense on the field teams have figured out how to
keep him from getting deep and the problem is the
Offensive line play Barley never is able to get into a
groove . And with nothing coming from the TE position
or the under use of the #2 WR Lattimer were continue to struggle sustaning drives and going down field .

GeofromNJ : 10/12/2018 1:15 pm : link
You play a quarterback that can get the ball to him.
Oh ffs
LedHeded : 10/12/2018 1:21 pm : link
Odell is not the problem, he is not a distraction to his teammates.
But he is fodder for the press & those with their panties twisted

Unfortunately he gave these talking heads what they've been looking for.
I agree ESPN piece was ill advised but c'mon with the torches

Would he? yes he would
Jay on the Island : 10/12/2018 1:23 pm : link
Should he? no he should not.
Balls who knows?
arniefez : 10/12/2018 1:27 pm : link
The authority nope.
It's easy to pile on OBJ
Mike in Long Beach : 10/12/2018 1:33 pm : link
because he has those embarrassing moments where he attacks inanimate objects, but he was far from our biggest problem yesterday.

- Offensive line can't block
- Eli stops looking downfield at some point even on the few plays he is protected
- Defense quits at the end of the 2nd quarter
- Can't defend third downs
- Can't make third downs
- Non-existent TE play
- Non-existent pass rush
- Dumb penalties.

None of those elements fell on Beckham.
One more time
oldutican : 10/12/2018 1:37 pm : link
This is the 3rd time I’ve posted these questions. Still looking for responses.
Has Beckham ever shown less than full effort on the field? Is there any evidence he has been lax in game preparation during the week or preseason? Is there evidence teammates feel he is a detriment to the team?
I have been a OBJ defender since he came here. After that

display on the sidelines last nite. Bashing his head on the ice machine or fan whatever it was and screaming out loud to himself I am seriously starting to be concerned for him.
take a look at the dead cap column

on this page. That will roughly be he cap hit the Giants would occur if they trade him in that year.

The decision to sign Beckham came from above Gettleman

The decision to get rid of Beckham should come from above Gettleman too.

If he's on the roster, his cap hit will be $21M next year. If they trade him, the dead cap hit in 2019 will be $16M (because the team on the other end of the trade will assume the guaranteed portion of his contract), so the trade would result in a net gain of $5M in cap space. In terms of real money, he is due $17M in salary (and workout bonus) next year, which represents the overall savings against the cap by executing a trade.

So that wasn't Beckham engaged in a topsy-turvy four week relationship with a kicking net early in the 2016 season?
If there
Les in TO : 10/12/2018 1:59 pm : link
Is a major controversy- not going to the locker room early or yelling at a ref or opponent - but let’s say he pulls a Khabib and runs across the field to punch an opposing coach - I can see Mara giving DG instructions to canvass deals

malslayer : 10/12/2018 2:26 pm : link
Giants are rebuilding. This is not a 1 year fix as most have mentioned. OBJ and Saquon are the future while we identify our next franchise QB. I suspect we will have several stop gaps over the next several years until we identify and go get our next franchise QB. That time until you get your next franchise QB is what I believe DG meant when he was talking about the cost of missing on a QB with a high pick setting you back for years.

I know very little about the next 2-3 years of the College draft classes or whether Webb has promise. However Lauletta reminds me Keenum who did very well in Schurmer's offense.

Those who want instant improvement week in and out should likely reset expectations. We are going to be bad for the next several years until we reboot from the Reese draft pick years.

unrelated. I really hope Beal is the real deal as a very high 3rd round pick is awfully expensive to spend on dart throw selection.

No, these are all brilliant and original thoughts in need of their own thread.

OBJ IS an issue with this team. You don't go out and sign a guy to a 95 million dollar deal and expect him to throw your organization under the bus in a national interview months later. All of this "I am trying to get the team fired up," is BS and directly related to him trying to monetize his brand.

He fooled Mara and all of us for an entire offseason even "putting on a collared shirt to sign his contract." He pulled the wool over their eyes. Got his money now he's back to the same distraction he was. Don't care how talented he is.

Look how 26 handles his business. Wouldn't be surprised if 13 ends up wanting out because he's not the face of the franchise anymore.

Spot on! I am not buying into he wants to win first! That ship sailed. He wants to go to a team where he can get touches and win. With Barkley you do not need a wide receiver with OBJ talent and baggage. Build team around Saquon and the new QB. OBJ will never win anything in the NFL.
