The two free agent offensive linemen and DG’s evaluation

Dave in PA : 10/12/2018 12:58 pm
Solder has not performed very well or to expectation, given his pedigree and big time contract. Omameh has been brutal and was paid pretty well too. Solder is obviously here for a couple years and it is what it is (likely just average), but Omameh can’t be part of the solution going forward. They just signed this guy and he stinks. For as much as Gettlemen harps on line play, he seems to have massively screwed up in his evaluation of Omameh.

This could take another 2 years to sort out, by which time Solder should be just about finished anyway. Rinse, repeat. Such is the nature of the sport, but our GM cant whiff on free agent signings and expect the team to turn their performance around.

may have been more about getting jerry out of the organization, if he was deemed to be part of the toxic culture of quitters and half-assers.. i always thought that was the logic..

This is the cop out to justify all Gettleman's moves. He is trying to change the culture.
Great we have a team of choir boys that can't play football. Gettleman is a pompous ass, that sold everyone he was bringing back power football. Except he missed on every FA lineman and traded away a decent center.
On top of hiring a coach and O-coordinator that only run out of shotgun.
No excuses anymore, ownership has no balls for this anymore.
If I had one issue with Gettlemen's evaluation of last years roster
Rjanyg : 10/12/2018 1:10 pm : link
I would have re-signed DJ Fluker over Omameh. I think Fluker played decent at times last year and he is very good in the run game. With all the talk of Hog Mollies, I was pretty sure Fluker would be a Giant. He is playing pretty well in Seattle right now.

I understand the Solder signing because of the issue with the left tackle spot. I thought center should have been a higher priority as well.

I don't understand why they traded Jones. Bad move I will agree.
omameh has been awful

This. Plus people have to come to terms that Omameh is getting $2M more than Jerry average salary. Technically, he is only be paid $900K this season and was given a $4.5M signing bonus. We will be able to get out of the contract in 2020. His 2018 and 2019 salary is guaranteed with an average of $5M/yr. He isn't an overspend, cap-killing free agent.
The scouts

sent gentleman a detailed report in a word document but he couldn't figure out how to open it
Did the head of pro personnel change when Reese and Ross

were dismissed?

I didn't think that was the case, and if not - why would the hiring of FA OL work any better after they were let go than before?

Everyone knew that they overpaid for Solder but it was a move that they had to make. There are spurts in his career that he has looked bad but never this bad. (I've never seen Brady get hit from the blind side before he finished his drop like Eli did by the goal line yesterday.) You can't fault Gettleman on that.

Omameh? The guy got paid like an average starter but hasn't looked the part. Maybe it was a miss, maybe it was the move to the right side, maybe it is having a bad tackle/center next to him. Regardless, I think we are stuck with him for at least another year as I think they need to look at C and/or RT before guard.

Sure you can fault him - everyone knew Solder was a mediocre lineman getting paid premium money.

What would you do otherwise? Well, the only real impetus for paying up would be thinking that you were a player or two away from a serviceable OL. If that was the thinking, it was dead wrong.
Here's the thing with Solder:
Anakim : 10/12/2018 1:44 pm : link
We knew he wasn't great. He was good, not great. The problem was there was literally no one else out there. Not in free agency, not in the draft. Solder was the only serviceable guy out there. There was no way we could have Flowers back out there protecting Eli's blindside, so we had to give Solder a shit ton of money in order to convince him to leave the Patriots.
Also remember....
Giantfan in skinland : 10/12/2018 1:52 pm : link
Solder might have been Plan B. Their first target was to throw that money Andrew Norwell.

True there weren't many other options in free agency plus they didn't want to reach in the draft. It is almost impossible to rebuild an entire offensive line in free agency. The giants top choice was Norwell but he chose Jax.

Yup and they didn't lowball him. He wanted to play for the Jags. Solder was the best of the remaining lineman. Someone was gonna pay him this salary. He was never great, but the line needed help and he's all there was. We failed to draft, develop, or acquire competent linemen for years and this is the result.
The GM probably has seen this since he doesn't believe
arniefez : 10/12/2018 3:21 pm : link
in analytics.

The Giants posted a Pass Block Win Rate (PBWR) of only 5% last night. That's the lowest single-game performance so far this season. Compare that to the Eagles' PBWR of 68% last night. The Giants are now ranked 31st in the league overall with a PBWR of 33%. The Eagles rank 16th at 50%, which is average. PBWR is an ESPN metric powered by Next Gen Stats.

What's this, like the 5th thread you've pasted that post into?
As many on this thread have stated
.McL. : 10/12/2018 5:14 pm : link
We were desperate, Solder was all that was out there. We knew he was at best average among starting LTs, perhaps a bit below...

It was also clear that Omameh was a JAG. But we did not have any guards at the time. Hernandez hadn't been signed yet.

I said it many times in April, and into May. This line is no better than what we had last year. We got better at LT, but worse elsewhere.

Personally, I wouls have gone all in to fix the line. I prefer Fluker to Omameh. I wanted to trade down and pick up a couple of guys like Nelson, McGLinchey, Ragnow... We could have still drafted Hernandez in rd 2. I don't know what offers we really had to trade down, and how possible it would have been to maneuver into position to get these guys but, that is what I wanted.

Yes it would have cost us Barkley. And Barkely has been awesome. Taking nothing away from him. How much better would the overall offense be, and how much better would the future look if we had 3 rookies on the line. We might still be 1 - 5 because of growing pains. But all those guys have been showing signs of living up to their draft status. How would our future look if we had a line of Solder, Hernandex, Ragnow, Fluker, McGlinchey. Football is a team game. One guy no matter how super human he is can't do it alone (see Barry Sanders). And it starts in the trenches.
And Solder is 30 years old, too,
Dave in Hoboken : 10/12/2018 5:16 pm : link
so probably all downhill from here. The fact that those in charge thought this team would compete this year is scary.

True he is just a stop gap...

And we are no better off going into this offseason than we were going into last years. We need 3 new OL and a QB. And right after that we still need another OL to replace Solder. Not to mention Edge rushers and 2 CBs.
Solder was horrible last night.
LauderdaleMatty : 10/12/2018 6:10 pm : link
Of course watching him get beat like a drum
Was one of the main reasons I turned off the game so I guess I owe him some thanks for saving me a lot of grief

I’ve been all Over Reese For years and this one might be worse than any of his bad cap deals.
